Clustered Federated Learning (CFL) is an innovative architecture that effectively tackles the challenge of data heterogeneity in Federated Learning (FL). However, such a setup also introduces vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers to execute more severe attacks. This paper compares the efficacy of data reconstruction attacks utilizing Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) in FL and CFL, respectively. It also proposes a general client-level data reconstruction attack scheme whose key is in that the attackers can eavesdrop the victim’s partial uploaded parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that the sample data generated in this kind of attack within the scenario of CFL exhibit a higher degree of similarity with the targeted data compared to FL. And it is observed that the attacks involving eavesdropping in CFL perform more effectively with a client-level attack accuracy. In addition, we design a lightweight and adaptive local differential privacy (LDP) mechanism to defend against this kind of attack. In this method, under the premise that the differential privacy budget decreases as the number of training round adds, each client dynamically adjusts the probability of adding differential privacy noise and the size of DP’s parameters according to the training accuracy and the resemblance to the reconstructed data generated by attackers. Our defense method can effectively alleviate the loss of training accuracy for each client caused by the accumulation of the differential privacy budget while ensuring the defense effect, and it also reduces clients’ computational burden. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Clustered Federated Learning (CFL), as a type of Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, divides the clients into multiple clusters through the clustering process and trains them within the clusters, thus improving the overall model training accuracy. But the clustering process is also the weak link, which can lead to the failure of the whole model training if it is interfered or destroyed by the attacker. In this paper, we study the attack methods and defense strategies for attackers to implement data poisoning by tampering with client data, resulting in overall clustering failure. Our defense approach is designed to identify anomalous clients and recover their poisoned data. In order to resist the malicious behavior of attackers, we propose a dual-threshold pixel difference and watermark authentication defense method for detecting the presence of anomalous clients. The method can accurately identify the abnormal fluctuations in the data and effectively screen out the abnormal clients. Meanwhile, we propose a self-embedding watermarking defense algorithm based on shuffling idea for recovering poisoned data. Among them, our self-embedding watermarking algorithm not only accurately locates and recovers the tampered region of the image, but also improves the watermark security to prevent attackers from cracking it easily. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can accurately identify the abnormal client and recover the data. Even if the client’s data is massively tampered with, we can recover the tampered data images with high quality and ensure that the CFL clustering is not corrupted. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This study aims to explore the team coordination commitments reported by undergraduate students pursuing biomedical and agricultural engineering majors after completing three team-based computational modeling assignments throughout the course of a semester. In each post-assignment reflection, the teams were asked to reflect on what aspects could be done better for the next project in terms of team coordination to address the issues that didn't work. Team-based reflections were analyzed using thematic analysis. We identified students' recognition of the importance of scheduling and coordinating meetings, task management and delegation, collaboration and teamwork, and time management towards teams coordination. Furthermore, the results of this study provide the evolution of teams' commitments for three teams, indicating that teams had a shift in their coordination priorities for the different projects. © 2023 IEEE.

This research paper investigates the effectiveness of cooperative learning and co-regulation strategies in promoting teamwork and enhancing students' performance in higher education. The study was conducted in an in-person intermediate-level information system design course with 152 students divided into 31 teams. The students utilized the Scrum framework to manage a semester-long project with three milestones. Retrospective data were collected at the end of each milestone, and the first milestone data were analyzed in this study. Through a thematic analysis of retrospective data collected after the first milestone, the study examines students' planning, monitoring, and reflection strategies. The findings reveal that students demonstrated adaptive planning, equitable contribution, and task allocation based on individual strengths and preferences. In terms of monitoring, students adopted a proactive approach, displayed relational competence, and utilized both synchronous and asynchronous communication channels. Regarding reflection, students valued effective planning and execution but struggled with time management. They developed concrete improvement strategies for the next milestone, emphasizing realistic deadlines, improved communication, and a better understanding of team members' strengths. This research contributes to the understanding of cooperative learning and co-regulation in promoting effective teamwork in higher education. The findings have implications for pedagogical practices and suggest the importance of integrating cooperative learning and co-regulation strategies in team-based learning environments. Future research can further explore the application of these strategies in different educational contexts and investigate their long-term effects on students' performance and engagement. © 2023 IEEE.

It is often the case that data are with multiple views in real-world applications. Fully exploring the information of each view is significant for making data more representative. However, due to various limitations and failures in data collection and pre-processing, it is inevitable for real data to suffer from view missing and data scarcity. The coexistence of these two issues makes it more challenging to achieve the pattern classification task. Currently, to our best knowledge, few appropriate methods can well-handle these two issues simultaneously. Aiming to draw more attention from the community to this challenge, we propose a new task in this paper, called few-shot partial multi-view learning, which focuses on overcoming the negative impact of the view-missing issue in the low-data regime. The challenges of this task are twofold: (i) it is difficult to overcome the impact of data scarcity under the interference of missing views;(ii) the limited number of data exacerbates information scarcity, thus making it harder to address the view-missing issue in turn. To address these challenges, we propose a new unified Gaussian dense-anchoring method. The unified dense anchors are learned for the limited partial multi-view data, thereby anchoring them into a unified dense representation space where the influence of data scarcity and view missing can be alleviated. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate our method. The results on Cub-googlenet-doc2vec, Handwritten, Caltech102, Scene15, Animal, ORL, tieredImagenet, and Birds-200-2011 datasets validate its effectiveness. About 17.5% of adults worldwide are infertile, which emphasizes the urgent need for cutting-edge reproductive healthcare solutions. Based on statistics from June 2023. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 8-13% of females on earth who are in their reproductive age have PCOS, and about 70% of cases go undiagnosed. With the integration of PCOS detection, IVF success rate prediction, and a period tracking system, this work offers a comprehensive women's health application. In addition, a large percentage of women suffer from menstruation abnormalities, such as dysmenorrhea (38.1%) and irregular frequency (80.7%). This approach improves early illness detection and fertility planning by using data analysis and machine learning. The techniques used are Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbor, Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, Decision Tree and SVM;which provides us better accuracy than previous works. © 2025 IEEE.

Environment-Tolerant Trust Opportunity Routing Based on Reinforcement Learning for Internet of Underwater Things

The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) has garnered significant interest due to its potential applications in monitoring underwater environments. However, the unique characteristics of acoustic communication, such as long propagation delays and high attenuation, present considerable obstacles for achieving efficient and dependable data transmission. Opportunistic routing is a crucial technique for enhancing packet delivery ratios by selecting a set of forwarding nodes and utilizing their cooperative forwarding to boost network throughput. Nevertheless, choosing an excessive number of forwarding nodes can lead to wasteful energy usage and extended communication delays. Moreover, the overlooked trustworthiness of forwarded nodes in most research works can undermine the effectiveness of opportunistic routing. Therefore, this study presents a novel trust opportunistic routing scheme that employs reinforcement learning to achieve resilience in constantly changing underwater settings. The combination of reinforcement learning and trust management enables the proposed opportunistic routing scheme to adapt to the unstable underwater environment and unknown malicious attacks. Initially, a method is introduced for measuring environmental fitness by considering multiple trust factors, including communication success rate, data reliability, and location dynamics. The proposed scheme then uses reinforcement learning to develop a reliable opportunistic routing method based on quantified state information. This component employs the obtained state to formulate action strategies and obtains reward values from environmental inputs. The reward update equation integrates these qualities to optimize the deployment of superior action strategies, finally achieving trust opportunistic routing for underwater data collection. Fundamental experimental results demonstrate that the proposed protocol performs exceptionally well in demanding underwater conditions, outperforming existing method

Multicomponent Similarity Graphs for Cross-Network Node Classification

Cross-network node classification aims to train a classifier for an unlabeled target network using a source network with rich labels. In applications, the degree of nodes mostly conforms to the long-tail distribution, i.e., most nodes in the network are tail nodes with sparse neighborhoods. The established methods focus on either the discrepancy cross network or the long tail in a single network. As for the cross-network node classification under long tail, the coexistence of sparsity of tail nodes and the discrepancy cross-network challenges existing methods for long tail or methods for the cross-network node classification. To this end, a multicomponent similarity graphs for cross-network node classification (MS-CNC) is proposed in this article. Specifically, in order to address the sparsity of the tail nodes, multiple component similarity graphs, including attribute and structure similarity graphs, are constructed for each network to enrich the neighborhoods of the tail nodes and alleviate the long-tail phenomenon. Then, multiple representations are learned from the multiple similarity graphs separately. Based on the multicomponent representations, a two-level adversarial model is designed to address the distribution difference across networks. One level is used to learn the invariant representations cross network in view of structure and attribute components separately, and the other level is used to learn the invariant representations in view of the fused structure and attribute graphs. Extensive experimental results show that the MS-CNC outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Impact Statement-Node classification is an important task in graph mining.
