This paper provides observations and motivations to mimic biological information processing. Alternative bio-inspired systems definitions, basics, approaches, algorithms, and chip implementations will be illustrated to offer a base of choice for bio-based Intelligent Information Processing (IIP) systems. Hybrid biological and bio-based IIP are briefly presented. Two specific applications follow with embedded bio-based systems: Bio-chemical sensing and detection E-nose; and Track improvements In the reliability of the software used in telecommunication network deployments. The biologically-based processing discoveries gleaned from observing the spikes in the brain activity of monkeys, introduced the concept of plasticity in synapses used in our embedded Spiking Neural Network (SNN) system for the E-Nose The mathematical construct of a defect tracking classifier is nonlinear, and the event to be recognized involves a sequentially varying or non-stationary phenomenon for telecommunication defect tracking and reliability estimation. Thus, Adaptive Recurrent Dynamic Neural Network (ARDNN) system using wavelet function as the basis improved the failure event estimation of software defect tracking in telecommunications and reduced the error from 88% to L25-8%.

Defect tracking is important in evaluating the reliability of the software used in telecommunication networks. Bio-inspired integrated approaches and embedded chips have been developed and implemented to track improvements in the software reliability. In this paper the integrated model for the failure discovery during testing is combined with bio-inspired approaches using the Recurrent Dynamic Neural Network (RDNN) with parametric adjustments and wavelets as basis;and the Adaptive parameters RDNN (ARDNN) where the criterion is to minimize the error in failure intensity estimation, subject to the model constraints. Simulation results favor our Adaptive Recurrent Dynamic Neural Network, with reduced error from 88% to 1.25 -to- 8% based on the number of iterations in the training phase.. The ARDNN approach provides optimum solution to the dynamic problem at hand since it iterates on the shape of the wavelet basis and provide adequate recovery of the data in the form of piecewise linear differential. ©2007 IEEE.

In many applications of sensor networks, it is essential to ensure that messages are transmitted to their destinations as early as possible and the buffer size of each sensor node is as small as possible. In this paper, we firstly propose a mesh sensor network system model. Based on this system model, the expressions for deriving the delay bound and buffer requirement bound are presented using network calculus. In order to balance traffic load and improve resource utilization, three traffic splitting mechanisms are proposed. The numerical results show that the delay bound and buffer requirement bound are lowered while applying those traffic splitting mechanisms. And thus the performance of the whole sensor network is improved.

As semiconductor technology scales down, integration on a chip becomes higher and concerns complex algorithm implementation. Those algorithms concern plenty of applications in many fields. Thus, adequate scheduling techniques that cope with such a variety of applications are required. The method presented in this paper addresses that concern and takes advantage of both data flow and control flow approaches. Knowing that such a Controlled Data Flow Graph (CDFG) scheduling is not polynomial, an efficient heuristic-based approach is then needed. In addition, because time and resources are user-constraints that gain a particular attention, our heuristic-based method targets a minimal number of cycles. More, it detects exclusive operations of the same type that can be scheduled in the same control step and share the same resource. Because the power dissipation is a crucial problem for SOC designs, our tool automatically introduces additional constraints so that the switching power dissipation at a high design level is reduced.

Development of the telecommunications software systems is a highly demanding task. Beside requirements for high reliability, availability and very complex features, customers today demand new releases to be delivered in a very short time frames. Usual development projects are faced with significant problems and obstacles that in most cases result with long development cycles, high cost and poor quality of implemented solutions. The transition from traditional software development towards agile projects with frequent releases is not trivial and demand significant changes in all aspects of project organization. This work analyzes major obstacles in telecommunication software development and proposes a method for the use of common project retrospectives to improve telecommunications software development. Proposed method is applied and evaluated on the actual project to demonstrate all benefits that project retrospectives can bring to the telecommunications software development.

A novel synchronization scheme for impulse radio (IR) UWB receiver based on Trigg and Leach detector was proposed in this paper. The analysis revealed that additional gain of 5dB - 10dB was achieved with the proposed scheme. For example, to achieve the specifications of detection probability Pd ≥ 0.8 and false alarm probability Pfa &le 10-6, the conventional matched filter (MF) based scheme requires SNR of 15dB, while only 5dB is needed for the proposed scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme was further verified by simulations. © 2006 IEEE.

A fast interconnect capacitance extraction engine is realized and presented here. Employing a fast multipole accelerated Generalized Minimal Residual (GMRES) based three-dimensional (3-D) field solver, this software tool can quickly and accurately extract parasitic capacitances of arbitrary interconnects embedded in piece-wise constant dielectrics. This engine is also capable of performing fast and accurate capacitance extraction for critical nets in Radio Frequency (RF) applications, IC designs, and MicroElectroMechanical systems (MEMS). The architecture of this extraction engine is described. Numerical examples are included to validate the extraction engine and demonstrate the capabilities of this extraction engine. © 2006 IEEE.

Three alternative bio-inspired approaches are proposed to investigate telecommunication system reliability and defect tracking. They employ a recent model for the failure discovery in the associated system software. These are: half-sibling and a clone (HSAC) genetic algorithm; a recurrent dynamic neural network (RDNN) requiring parametric adjustments and using wavelets as basis; another RDNN with Adaptive parameters to incoming stream of input data, such that the error in failure intensity is minimized, subject to the model constraints. Each approach aims to improve speed of convergence, reliability, noise tolerance, and suitability for hardware implementation. Simulation results seem to favor the ARDNN since it iterates (about 10) on the shape of the wavelet basis and provide adequate recovery of the data in the form of piecewise linear differential.
