This paper presents a unique study of post-mortem human iris recognition and the first known to us database of near-infrared and visible-light iris images of deceased humans collected up to almost 17 days after death. We used four different iris recognition methods to analyze the dynamics of iris quality decay in short-term comparisons (samples collected up to 60 hours after death) and long-term comparisons (for samples acquired up to 407 hours after demise). This study shows that post-mortem iris recognition is possible and occasionally works even 17 days after death. These conclusions contradict a promulgated rumor that iris is unusable shortly after decease. We make this dataset publicly available to let others verify our findings and to research new aspects of this important and unfamiliar topic. We are not aware of any earlier papers offering post-mortem human iris images and such comprehensive analysis employing four different matchers.

Continuous advances in the areas of sensor networks have made wireless sensor networks (WSNs) attractive for a wide variety of applications, with vastly varying requirements and characteristics. As the data sensed by nodes usually contain sensitive information, adherence to data protection requirements is vital in *** paper introduces a new and robust key pre-distribution key management scheme using random polynomial functions and a matrix. The proposed mechanism significantly increases storage efficiency and enhances network resilience against node capture. The effectiveness of the mechanism is demonstrated by security analysis and comparisontothe existing schemes. © 2015 Universitas Ahmad Dahlan.

In this paper, a side polished multimode plastic optical fiber gas sensor coated with graphene/polyaniline nanocomposite is developed for ammonia gas sensing application. Graphene/polyaniline nanocomposite is deposited onto side polished plastic optical fiber by drop-casting method. The proposed sensor is exposed to different concentration of ammonia varies from 1% to 0.25 % at room temperature. Absorbance response of the gas sensor is monitored and recorded using spectrophotometer system. The absorbance increase linearly with the increase in the ammonia concentrations. The response and recovery time are 24 s and 71.8 s, respectively. © 2016 IEEE.

A CMOS chaotic jerk oscillator is presented based on inherently hyperbolic tangent nonlinearity. The circuit comprises three Gm-C integrators, a current mirror and a differential Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA). The OTA provides inherently hyperbolic tangent nonlinearity for chaos. A balanced double-scroll strange attractor is capable of continuously smooth transition to an unbalanced double-scroll and, finally, to either a right-half or a left-half single-scroll attractor. Such transition is adjustable by varying a DC voltage. The circuit is implemented in a 0.18-μm CMOS technology with full-custom design. © 2016 IEEE.

The volume and diversity of data in biomedical research have been rapidly increasing in recent years. While such data hold significant promise for accelerating discovery, their use entails many challenges including: the need for adequate computational infrastructure, secure processes for data sharing and access, tools that allow researchers to find and integrate diverse datasets, and standardized methods of analysis. These are just some elements of a complex ecosystem that needs to be built to support the rapid accumulation of these data. The NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative aims to facilitate digitally enabled biomedical research. Within the BD2K framework, the Commons initiative is intended to establish a virtual environment that will facilitate the use, interoperability, and discoverability of shared digital objects used for research. The BD2K Commons Framework Pilots Working Group (CFPWG) was established to clarify goals and work on pilot projects that address existing gaps toward realizing the vision of the BD2K Commons. This report reviews highlights from a two-day meeting involving the BD2K CFPWG to provide insights on trends and considerations in advancing Big Data science for biomedical research in the United States. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.

The injection of a high frequency signal in the stator via inverter has been proven to be a viable option to estimate the magnet temperature in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). Injection of a pulsating d-axis current is especially appealing, as it is insensitive to the speed, Ld and Lq inductance variations. Furthermore, it is suitable both for interior PMSMs (IPMSMs) and surface PMSMs (SPMSMs). Regardless of its promising characteristics, there is a number of issues which can reduce its accuracy, including machine assembling tolerances and rotor lamination grain orientation, which might need to be considered. This paper analyzes the sensitivity of temperature estimation using pulsating d-axis high frequency current injection to rotor eccentricities, PM assembling tolerances and lamination grain orientation. Preliminary results indicate that these issues can have a non-negligible impact on the accuracy of the method.1 © 2015 IEEE.

PM temperature measurement/estimation in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is convenient both for torque control and monitoring purposes. Most of existing methods provide and averaged/punctual temperature. However, PM temperature distribution is not uniform, which can have unexpected adverse effects like reduced accuracy estimating the torque produced by the machine or local demagnetization e.g. due to hot spots. PM temperature distribution can be measured or estimated. Since the PMs are not visible, measuring the PM temperature distribution would require an array of temperature sensors attached to the PM. While this is technically feasible, it is unaffordable in commercial products due to cost and robustness issues. Alternatively, the PM temperature distribution can be estimated. The paper analyzes the use of BEMF harmonics to estimate the differential temperature in the PM, i.e. the temperature difference between the hottest and coldest parts of the magnets. Combined with average PM temperature estimation methods, this information can be used to estimate the PM temperature spatial distribution.1 © 2015 IEEE.

Rolling element bearings constitute the key parts on rotating machinery and their fault diagnosis are of great importance. In this paper, a novel Two-Step fault diagnosis framework is proposed to diagnose the status of rolling element bearings with imbalanced data. The Wavelet Packet Transform(WPT) is used to determine the feature vectors. 16-dimensional wavelet packet node energies were extracted from the original datasets as the feature vectors prepared to input to the ***, our proposed framework consists of two steps for the fault diagnosis, where Step One makes use of Weighted Extreme Learning Machine(weighted ELM) in an effort to classify the normal or abnormal categories, and Step Two further diagnoses the underlying anomaly in details. The effectiveness of our proposed approach is testified on the raw data collected from the rolling element bearing experiments conducted in our Institute,and the empirical results showed that our approach is really fast and can achieve the diagnosis accuracies more than 95%.
