In this paper, the accuracy of soft computing technique in solar radiation prediction based on series of measured meteorological data (monthly mean sunshine duration, monthly mean maximum and minimum temperature) taking from Iseyin meteorological station in Nigeria was examined. The process, which simulates the solar radiation with support vector regression (SVR), was constructed. The inputs were monthly mean maximum temperature (Tmax), monthly mean minimum temperature (Tmin) and monthly mean sunshine duration ( $$ \bar{n} $$ ). Polynomial and radial basis functions (RBF) are applied as the SVR kernel function to estimate solar radiation. According to the results, a greater improvement in estimation accuracy can be achieved through the SVR with polynomial basis function compared to RBF. The SVR coefficient of determination R 2 with the polynomial function was 0.7395 and with the radial basis function, the R 2 was 0.5877.

Eduroam is a Wi-Fi roaming system which allows a user of a domain to access wireless resources in another domain with the unique credential of the user managed in the original domain. Eduroam employs a hierarchical tree structure of RADIUS servers to provide a scalable authentication procedure over wide area networks. However, the tree structure of RADIUS servers causes long latency of remote authentication procedures, and the single point of failures can be issued. In this paper, we propose a flat layer approach to build a network of RADIUS servers in order to reduce the delay of remote authentication procedures and eliminate the concern of the single point of failures. In the flat layer approach, each RADIUS server knows the information of all the other RADIUS servers through a domain mapping table. The domain mapping table is updated whenever the membership of the network of RADIUS servers is changed. To make the updating operation of domain mapping tables more efficient and faster, DHT based broadcasting approach is used. Through an implementation based evaluation, we show that our flat layer approach is efficient and viable in practice. © 2014 SERSC.

In cognitive radio networks, secondary users (SUs) are allowed to opportunistically exploit the licensed channels. Once finding the spectrum holes, SUs need to share the available licensed channels. Therefore, one of the critical challenges for fully utilizing the spectrum resources is how the SUs obtain accurate information about the primary users' (PUs') activities and make right decisions on which channels to access so as to avoid competition from other SUs. In this paper, we formulate SUs' learning and decision making process as a Chinese restaurant game, which is concerned with negative network externality, by considering the scenario where each SU senses only one of the channels and then makes access decisions sequentially. In the proposed game, SUs build the knowledge of the PUs' activities by their own sensing and learning the information from other SUs. They also predict the subsequent SUs' decisions to maximize their own utilities. We analyze the interactions among SUs and study specifically the impact of SUs' initial belief, sensing accuracy and channel quality on their decisions. We also derive the theoretical results for the two-user two-channel case and extend the results to the multi-user multi-channel case. Finally, we verify the theoretical results and evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of social welfare through simulations. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Space optical communications is studied at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, where the Small Optical TrAnsponder (SOTA) was developed and embarked on a 50-kg-class satellite. Atmospheric fluctuation is an issue to be solved in ground-to-satellite optical communication links. The SOTA has error-correcting functions using Reed-Solomon code and low-density generator matrix (LDGM) code to prevent the omission of data from signal fading owing to atmospheric fluctuations. In this paper, we present a demonstration that involves sending image data taken by an onboard camera with LDGM code via satellite-to-ground optical communication links. Our demonstration reveals how to correct the omission of data resulting from atmospheric turbulence and tracking errors.

Recently, secondary use of white-spaces has been expected as one of the technologies to mitigate spectrum resource shortage problem. In particular, secondary utilization of white-spaces in the TV band (TVWS) has attracted attention and some standardizing activities such as IEEE802.11af and IEEE802.22 have been promoted. For the mobile communication systems, it is possible to secure more channels for traffic balancing by utilizing the TVWS, while there are still some difficulties in miniaturization and low power consumption for TVWS utilization. In this study, the authors prototyped a smart phone type TV band device, which supports a TVWS LTE system, by applying frequency conversion technology. This prototyped smart phone is fully operated by an internal battery and can connect to the TVWS eNB previously developed by the authors. Commercial LTE Band 1 is also supported and the phone can select and smoothly switch between two bands. This is the world’s first prototyped smart phone supporting the TVWS that demonstrates not only the feasibility of miniaturization and low power consumption, but also the possibility of spectrum expansion in mobile communication system towards next generation. © Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2015.

Development of TV white-space LTE devices complying with regulation in UK digital terrestrial TV band 1

Recently, white-space communication system has been widely promoted as one of the spectrum sharing technologies for further efficient use of spectrum resource. In particular, white-spaces in the TV bands (TVWS, TV white-spaces) have attracted attentions worldwide and regulations have been established in the U.S.A, the U.K., Singapore, etc. In the U.K., pilot program has been started based on regulations established by the Ofcom and trial operation of TVWS communication systems in cooperation with authenticated white-space databases has been performed from July 2014. In this trial, to avoid interference with primary users such as TV broadcasters and wireless microphones, draft rules established by ETSI are employed as specifications of radio characteristics. In this study, to verify the feasibility of spectrum expansion of mobile communication systems by utilizing the TVWS, the authors have developed TVWS LTE devices complying with the Ofcom rules and performed field experiment in the U.K. Prototyped devices have been licensed by the Ofcom and TVWS LTE system has been successfully demonstrated in London urban area. As a result, it is confirmed that the existing LTE system can be operated in the U.K. TVWS without interference with the primary users. This is the first report on prototype of TVWS LTE devices conforming to the ETSI draft specification. © Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2015.

In this paper, we investigate mode selection for coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission in downlink LTE-A networks, where inter-cluster interference exists. The proposed scheme selects the single-cell (SC) or coordinated beamforming (CB) transmission mode according to interference level to maximize the weighted sum rate with fairness consideration. To formulate the optimization problem, an approximated closed-form expression for the achievable rate is derived by modeling the probability distributions of signal and interference powers as Gamma distributions. Since the original optimization problem is a combinatorial and non-convex one with high complexity, a low-complexity and sub-optimal algorithm is proposed, which first performs coordinated cell selection and then transmission mode selection. Simulation results show that the closed-form approximation of the achievable rate is very tight and the proposed mode selection scheme can improve the average system throughput by 13% and the 10th percentile user throughput by 10% compared with the existing scheme.

Cognitive radio network (CRN) has emerged as a promising solution to solve the problem of underutilization of licensed spectrum. It allows opportunistic access of unutilized spectrum (or white spaces) by unlicensed users (or secondary users, SUs) whilst minimizing interference to licensed users (or primary users, PUs). The dynamicity of channel availability has imposed additional challenges for routing in CRNs. Besides providing optimal routes to SUs for communication, one of the key requirements of routing in CRNs is to minimize interference to PUs. In this paper, we propose a joint channel selection and cluster-based routing scheme called SMART (SpectruM-Aware cluster-based RouTing) for CRNs. SMART enables SUs to form clusters in the network, and subsequently, it enables SU source node to search for a route to its destination node in the underlying clustered network. SMART applies an artificial intelligence approach called reinforcement learning in order to maximize network performance, such as SU-PU interference and packet delivery ratio. Simulation results show that SMART reduces significant interference to PUs without significance degradation of packet delivery ratio when compared to clustered scheme without cluster maintenance (i.e., SMART-NO-MNT) and non-clustered scheme (i.e., spectrum-aware AODV or SA-AODV).

This paper presents a vision-based fingertip writing digits detection and recognition system using a CMOS camera and FPGA implementation. It is a real-time signature detector, since the image process algorithms are all executed in Verilog code. The experimental results show that the system can successfully recognize fingertip-numeral-writing with a accuracy rate of 95.8%.
