In order to effectively eliminate outliers and noise points in 3D scattered point cloud, a denoising smoothing algorithm which is the combination of removing outliers algorithm and trilateral filter is proposed. This is accomplished by rejecting outliers, correcting the normal direction and moving noise points along the modified normal direction within local adaptive neighborhoods. First, the outliers are removed by the method of mathematical statistics, on this basis, estimating normal direction and curvature of point cloud by covariance analysis method. Then, correct the normal direction by combining trilateral filter weighting factor with adaptive optimal neighborhood function. Finally, calculate position offset of data points in the direction of normal amendment by trilateral filter weighting factor in order to smooth the point cloud. Experimental results show that the proposed method is simple and effective, successfully removing noise from point cloud while preserving inherent geometric features. © 2014 ISSN 1881-803X.

Avalanche dynamics of granular materials under the slumping regime in a rotating drum as revealed by speckle visibility spectroscopy

We used speckle visibility spectroscopy to measure the time-resolved dynamcis of avalanching down the inclined surface of a granular material in a half-full rotating drum operating in the slumping regime. The distribution of the avalanche period, td, rest time between them, tr, and peak particle velocity fluctuation, δvp2, are all normally distributed. While the distributions of the two times at the top and bottom of the free surface are very similar, the particle velocity fluctuation is greater at the bottom of the free surface than at the top. The rest time is observed to be inversely related to the drum speed. Combining this with the relation of tr and the difference of the upper and lower angle of repose for the granular material, Δθ, we find that the latter decreases linearly with increasing rotational speed. We also observe that td increases in a linear fashion with the drum speed. Using the relation of tr and the distance that particles have to move during an avalanche, we further find that a new scaling relation of the mean number of avalanches required to traverse the free surface with drum speed. We find that the slumping frequency increases with the rotating speed before becoming constant in the slumping-to-rolling transition region. Finally, we find that the average peak of the fluctuation speed of the avalanche, δvp2, increases linearly with the drum speed.

Lab-on-CMOS chips (LOCMOS) are sophisticated miniaturized analysis tools based on integrated circuit (IC) microchips performing various laboratory functions. We have developed a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) package for a LOCMOS application regarding cytotoxicity assessment of nanomaterials. The LTCC packaged capacitance sensor chip is designed for long-term cell viability monitoring during nanoparticle exposure. The introduced LTCC package utilizes the flip chip bonding technique, and it is biocompatible as well as able to withstand the environmental conditions required to maintain mammalian cell culture directly on the surface of a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit.

The understanding of applications is a must to design proper resource scheduling policies and a cost-effective design of a mobile device. Different from the past work on user behavior studies or user-oriented resource allocation, we are interested in the "behavior" analysis of applications in resource consumption for mobile devices. In particular, we propose a way to select indices to capture the characteristics of a mobile device and then a way to visualize its resource consumption. Example streaming applications, namely YouTube and Vimeo, are taken as a case study to show the "behaviors" of the streaming applications in consuming resources and their difference. We then show how to use the same methodology to explore the differences in resource consumption for some functionalities of some popular social-network applications, namely Facebook and Twitter. The study provides not only insights to the resource needs of applications but also potential directions in software optimization, such as energy efficiency and data caching. Copyright 2014 ACM.

This paper considers two mutual-information based approaches for clustering random variables proposed in the literature: clustering by mutual information relevance networks (MIRNs) and clustering by multivariate mutual information (MMI). Despite being two seemingly very different approaches, the derived clustering solutions share very strong structural similarity. Motivated by this curious fact, in this paper we show that there is a precise connection between these two clustering solutions via the celebrated Chow-Liu tree algorithm in machine learning: Under a Chow-Liu tree approximation to the underlying joint distribution, the clustering solutions provided by MIRNs and by MMI are, in fact, identical. This solidifies the heuristic view of clustering by MMI as a natural generalization of clustering by MIRNs from dependency-tree distributions to general joint distributions.

To improve the access to medical information is necessary to design and implement integrated informatics techniques aimed to gather data from different and heterogeneous sources. This paper describes the technologies used to integrate data coming from the electronic medical record of the IRCCS Fondazione Maugeri (FSM) hospital of Pavia, Italy, and combines them with administrative, pharmacy drugs purchase coming from the local healthcare agency (ASL) of the Pavia area and environmental open data of the same region. The integration process is focused on data coming from a cohort of one thousand patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Data analysis and temporal data mining techniques have been integrated to enhance the initial dataset allowing the possibility to stratify patients using further information coming from the mined data like behavioral patterns of prescription-related drug purchases and other frequent clinical temporal patterns, through the use of an intuitive dashboard controlled system.

The injection of a high frequency signal in the stator via inverter has been shown to be a viable option to estimate the magnet temperature in PMSMs. The variation of the magnet resistance with temperature is reflected in the stator high frequency resistance, which can be measured from the resulting current when a high frequency voltage is injected. However, this method is sensitive to d and q-axis inductances (L_d and L_q) variations as well as to the machine speed. In addition, it is only suitable for SPMSMs, being inadequate for IPMSMs. In this paper, the use of a pulsating high frequency current injection in the d-axis of the machine for temperature estimation purposes is proposed. The proposed method will be shown to be insensitive to the speed, L_q and L_d variations. Furthermore, it can be used with both SPMSMs and IPMSMs.

Lack of anatomical details in diffusion weighted magnetic resonance images limits their utilization and treatment response monitoring, shadowing the useful information they contain. Contemporary methods of utilizing these images are based on manual selection of region of interest, raising concerns about susceptibility of manual ROI placement to human errors, and limiting the investigation in specific spatial regions. In contrary to the whole body bone marrow segmentation with the luxury to include all the diseased bone marrow, high profile analysis could be applied. In this paper, we propose an automatic method for segmentation of pelvic bone with possible bone metastasis in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. This method is a multi-parametric registration-segmentation method, taking advantage of prior information of the pelvic anatomy. Intensity inhomogeneity in the bone structure caused by bone marrow metastasis challenges the segmentation process on anatomical MR images. Specifically, we first build a probability map which provides shape and volume constraints for the segmentation. Then, T1-weighted MR images are rigidly registered to the probability map, and then the registered T1-weighted image is non-rigidly registered to its' corresponding ADC maps. Finally, the probability map is coupled with a local level set framework for automatic pelvic bone segmentation of the T1-weighted images. The segmented bone is used as a mask on the ADC map. The method is validated on 10 pairs of ADC/T1 images of breast cancer with bone marrow metastases patients. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents an improved method to teleoperate impedance of a robot based on surface electromyography (EMG) and test it experimentally. Based on a linear mapping between EMG amplitude and stiffness, an incremental stiffness extraction method is developed, which uses instantaneous amplitude identified from EMG in a high frequency band, compensating for non-linear residual error in the linear mapping and preventing muscle fatigue from affecting the control. Experiments on one joint of the Baxter robot are carried out to test the approach in a disturbance attenuation task, and to compare it with automatic human-like impedance adaptation. The experimental results demonstrate that the new human operated impedance method is successful at attenuating disturbance, and results similarly to as automatic disturbance attenuation, thus demonstrating its efficiency. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

In this paper, we investigate multi-cell coordinated scheduling and power allocation in downlink long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) systems, where orthogonal frequency division multiple-access (OFDMA) is used. The proposed scheme performs joint scheduling, power allocation, and modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection to maximize the overall weighted throughput with proportional fairness. Our scheme considers the practical constraints in LTE-A systems. Since the optimization problem is a combinatorial and non-convex one and is with high complexity, low-complexity and suboptimal algorithms are proposed, which separate the scheduling and power allocation into two subproblems. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the average system throughput by 10% and the 10th percentile throughput by 15% compared with the existing scheme.
