Multiple Level Security (MLS) has always been a center of focus since the usage of computers in military and intelligence systems. Extensive studies have been done on how to utilize virtualization technologies to provide multiple level secured execution in the cloud, yet the general assumption is that all components in the cloud service provider are trusted. With the advanced persistent threats currently faced by the military and intelligence community, it is unrealistic to assume complex information systems can remain trustworthy all the time. In this work, we present MUltiple level Security cloud with strong Hardware level Isolation (MUSHI), a novel framework that can provide hardware level isolation and protection to individual guest virtual machine (VM) execution. With MUSHI, a user can maintain confidentiality and integrity of her VM in a multicore environment even in the presence of malicious attacks from both within and outside the cloud infrastructure.

In this paper, we consider mobile data gathering in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by using a mobile collector with multiple antennas. By taking into account the elastic nature of wireless link capacity and the power control for each sensor, we first propose a data gathering cost minimization (DaGCM) framework with concurrent data uploading, which is constrained by flow conservation, energy consumption, link capacity, compatibility among sensors and the bound on total sojourn time of the mobile collector at all anchor points. One of the main features of this framework is that it allows concurrent data uploading from sensors to the mobile collector to sharply shorten data gathering latency and significantly reduce energy consumption due to the use of multiple antennas and space-division multiple access technique. We then relax the DaGCM problem with Lagrangian dualization and solve it with the subgradient iteration algorithm. Furthermore, we present a distributed algorithm composed of cross-layer data control, routing, power control and compatibility determination subalgorithms with explicit message passing. We also give the subalgorithm for finding the optimal sojourn time of the mobile collector at different anchor points. Finally, we provide numerical results to show the convergence of the proposed DaGCM algorithm and its advantages over the algorithm without concurrent data uploading and power control in terms of data gathering latency and energy consumption.

In this paper, we report the investigation of monitoring the degradation of transformer oil in power transformer using fiber Bragg grating sensor (FBG). The findings show that aging transformer oil has a higher refractive index (RI) compared to fresh transformer oil. This is detected by a wavelength shift in the FBG sensor's spectral response. The outcome complies with the breakdown voltage test which is the standard test for testing transformer oil ageing. Finally, we show that the sensor is temperature independent.

CLEFIA, a new 128-bit block cipher proposed by Sony Corporation, is increasingly attracting cryptanalysts＇ attention. In this paper, we present two new impossible differential attacks on 13 rounds of CLEFIA-128. The proposed attacks utilize a variety of previously known techniques, in particular the hash table technique and redundancy in the key schedule of this block cipher. The first attack does not consider the whitening layers of CLEFIA, requires 21~9＂5 chosen plaintexts, and has a running time equivalent to about 2112.9 encryptions. The second attack preserves the whitening layers, requires 2117.8 chosen plaintexts, and has a total time complexity equivalent to about 2121.2 encryptions.

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor is investigated using 2-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation. The sensitivity and accuracy of the sensor with and without gratings is observed as well as the effect of changing the grating distance on the resonant wavelength. The findings show that high sensitivity of above 500nm/RIU and a fourfold increase in signal to noise ratio (SNR) is obtained by introducing FBG to the basic fiber optic based SPR structure. Increasing the grating period results in a red shift in the resonant wavelength, thus enabling multiple sensor fabrication on a single fiber optic cable. Simulation of the FBG based SPR sensor to detect alcohol concentration from 0 to 100% in water is also demonstrated.

As biological systems exhibit adaptation, healing and robustness in the face of changing environmental behavior, this paradigm has actuated research dealing with the concept of self-healing systems, which attempt to heal themselves in the sense of recovering from malicious attacks and rectifying of system faults. The goal of self-healing systems is to provide survivable systems that require high dependability, robustness, adaptability, and availability. Such systems maintain one or more models, whether external or internal, at run time as a basis for identifying problems and resolving them. This article describes an architectural description language, called ADML, which is being developed as a new formal language and/or conceptual model for representing evolving software architectures. The ADML embraces dynamic change as a fundamental consideration, supports a broad class of adaptive changes at the architectural level, and offers a uniform way to represent and reason about both static and dynamic aspects of self-healing systems. Because the ADML is based on the Dynamic Description Logic DDL(SHON (D)), which can represent both dynamic semantics and static semantics under a unified logical framework, architectural ontology entailment for the ADML languages can be reduced to knowledge base satisfiability in DDL(SHON (D)), and dynamic description logic algorithms and implementations can be used to provide reasoning services for ADML. In this article, we present the syntax of ADML, explain its underlying semantics using the Dynamic Description Logic DDL(SHON (D)), and exemplify our approach by applying it to the domain of load balancing a wireless remote-access system;the preliminary results certify the potential of the approach.

By using different fiber types as gain medium such as 500 m HNLF, 215 cm Bi-EDF, 7.2 km DCF, 11 km DCF, 18.2 km DCF, as well as the composition of Bi-EDF with 11 km DCF and finally the composition of Bi-EDF with the 18.2 km DCF, Raman gain was characterized and measured by the same set up as proposed in our study. The results revealed that the composition of Bi-EDF with the 18.2 km DCF provided the highest effective Raman gain among the other fibers investigated.

AIM:To demonstrate the feasibility of optical coherence tomography(OCT)imaging in differentiating cervical inlet patch(CIP)from normal esophagus,Barrett'sesophagus(BE),normal stomach and duodenum. METHODS:This study was conducted at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare system(VABHS).Patients undergoing standard esophagogastroduodenoscopy at VABHS,including one patient with CIP,one representative patient with BE and three representative normal subjects were *** light video endoscopy was performed and endoscopic 3D-OCT images were obtained in each patient using a prototype OCT *** OCT imaging probe passes through the working channel of the endoscope to enable simultaneous video endoscopy and 3D-OCT examination of the human gastrointestinal(GI)*** hematoxylin and eosin(H and E)histology was performed on biopsy or endoscopic mucosal resection specimens in order to compare and validate the 3D-OCT data. RESULTS:CIP was observed from a 68-year old male with gastroesophageal reflux *** CIP region appeared as a pink circular lesion in the upper esophagus under white light *** imaging over the CIP region showed columnar epithelium structure,which clearly contrasted the squamous epithelium structure from adjacent normal esophagus.3D-OCT images obtained from other representative patients demonstrated distinctive patterns of the normal esophagus,BE,normal stomach,and normal duodenum ***,such as squamous epithelium,lamina propria, muscularis mucosa,muscularis propria,esophageal glands,Barrett's glands,gastric mucosa,gastric glands, and intestinal mucosal villi were clearly observed with OCT and matched with H and E *** results demonstrated the feasibility of using OCT to evaluate GI tissue morphology in situ and in real-time. CONCLUSION:We demonstrate in situ evaluation of CIP microstructures using 3D-OCT,which may be a useful tool for future diagnosis and follow-up of patients with CIP.

This paper proposes a method to predict the effect of Bevacizumab therapy on Glioblastoma Multiform (GBM) tumors. The prediction is critical for effective treatment planning. The proposed method is developed and evaluated using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and post-contrast T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Images (pc-T1-MRI) of 14 patients with GBM tumors gathered before and after the treatment. First, the proposed method calculates diffusion anisotropy indices (DAI) of all voxels in the brain. These diffusion anisotropy indices are Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), Relative Anisotropy (RA), and Volume Ratio (VR). Then, it registers post-treatment pc-T1-MRI and pre-treatment DAI maps to pre-treatment pc-T1-MRI. Next, it uses a thresholding method to segment the tumor from pc-T1-MRI studies. Comparing Gd-enhanced voxels of the pre- and post-treatment pc-T1-MRI, the DAIs of the tumor are labeled based on their response to the treatment. The voxels of 7 patients are randomly selected to train 4 classifiers (ANN, SVM, KNN, and ANFIS) and then all voxels of the other 7 patients are used to test them. For each classifier, four performance measures (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and accuracy) are calculated. Experimental results show that the ANFIS is more accurate than the other classifiers in predicting the treatment response.

A dual polarization lidar was used to sense internal waves from a small aircraft. Internal waves are gravity waves that are formed by a vertical displacement of a density gradient in the ocean. If the perturbation is great enough, a nonlinear wave is produced and the balance between nonlinearity and dispersion can create a soliton-like wave packet. We observed nonlinear wave packets in West Sound, Orcas Island, Washington. In this region, a density gradient is formed in the summer by solar heating of the surface water. The perturbation is produced by strong tidal flow through a narrow, shallow channel at the mouth of the sound. Plankton layers form in association with the density gradients, and these layers produce an enhanced lidar return that moves up and down with the wave. We observed these internal waves with a lidar operating at 532 nm. They were much more visible when the receiver was polarized orthogonal to the transmitted laser pulse. This was the case whether linear or circular polarization was used, with no significant difference between the two cases. These internal waves were also visible to the naked eye, when the surface currents produced by the waves modulated the small surface waves that produce the apparent texture of the ocean surface. © 2012 SPIE.
