Nonlinear effects in actively mode-locked fiber lasers are presented. A laser model including a gain media, a band pass filter, optical fiber and an intensity modulator is introduced to investigate the performance of the laser under nonlinear effects. Lasers in both working conditions, non-detuning and detuning, are studied. We find that the nonlinear effects compress the pulse through the self phase modulation (SPM) effect. However, there is a trade of between pulse shortening and large detuning range. Laser with shorter pulse has narrower detuning range and vise versa.

Inattentive and impaired drivers are a major cause of road accidents. Especially when impaired by drugs, fatigue or physical handicaps, the skill levels, driving habits, capabilities and decisions of a human driver are adversely affected. In such cases, the ability of a driver to safely operate a vehicle may be augmented considerably by well tuned and driver adaptive warning and assistance systems. Data from 105 drivers were collected in the Drive Safe project on an approximately 30 km route containing both city and highway traffic. The data was used to develop methods for determining inattentive/impaired drivers. This paper is on a lane keeping driver assistant system that is activated once such an inattentive/impaired driver who cannot perform a good task of lane keeping by himself is determined. Robust, parameter space based and velocity scheduled control design techniques carried out in the COMES toolbox are used for designing the lane keeping controller. A camera based image processing algorithm for lane detection and tracking is used. The image processing algorithm and the lane keeping assistant control system are evaluated first using offline simulations and then using more realistic, real time hardware-in-the-loop simulations. While a relatively simple linear model is used for lane keeping controller design, evaluation of the designed controller also uses the high fidelity, high order, realistic and nonlinear vehicle model in Carmaker HiL. A PC is used for processing video frames coming from an in-vehicle camera pointed towards the road ahead. Lane detection and tracking computations including fitting of composite Bezier curves to curved lanes are carried out in this PC. A dSpace microautobox is available for obtaining the lane data from the PC and the Carmaker vehicle data from the dSpace compact simulator used and calculating the required steering actions and sending them to the Carmaker vehicle model. All-optical wavelength conversion is investigated using fourwave mixing in silicon waveguides. The influences of nonlinear losses caused by two-photon absorption (TPA) and TPA-induced free-carrier absorption on the conversion efficiency and phase-matching condition are analyzed. The conversion bandwidth is tempted to enhance by optimizing the waveguide geometry and using the two-pump regime. And finally an angled-polarization pump is used to realize the polarization-independent wavelength conversion by eliminating the polarization discrepancy between the TE and TM modes.

Power penalty assessment of OXADM device model-analytical analysis

This OXADM are located in the nodes, which have more than two switching directions in ring networks. The function of OXADM is to flexibility switch the wavelengths among the different input and output ports. Because of the OXADM's imperfect performance, the insertion loss and crosstalk are induced in the system. Analytical modeling method is using to analyze the OXADM structure in crosstalk or power leakage that lead to the power penalty. To overcome this problem, power penalty is needed to be supplied. The insertion of this power penalty depends on few parameters. The parameters that we going to investigate here will be in term of number of operating wavelengths and number of input/output ports as well as the Q factor. The variation of this parameters will affects the amount of the desired power penalty. Simulation results in higher crosstalk or higher power penalty needed as the number of OXADM increases. As the sum of the wavelength and the number of input/output for each OXADM increases, the power penalty will increased as well. Investigation on the maximum Q factors is 6 to get the minimum power penalty at the lowest BER for most of the combination of the sum of the wavelength and the number of input/output for each OXADM.

With the development of information, the paradigm in distributed networked applications is shifting towards Service Oriented Architecture, which has some good quality of louse coupled, reused, opened and integrated attributes. Single service can only satisfy some certain requirement, only large scale of integration can solve the conflicts between demands and supply. It involves three layers' integration, the bottom data integration, the middle process integration and the uppermost architecture integration. The paper mainly focuses on the middle process integration. The paper makes use of object Petri net language to construct five meta-models of sequence, alternative, parallel, arbitrary sequence, and iteration operations and studies some characteristics of these meta-models. On the basis of the above analysis, we make further research on process integration methods and models. Finally, process integration algorithm and analysis are made, which verifies the improvement of process analysis and implementation efficiency.

McAfee SecurityCenter Firewall is one of the most popular security software installed on millions of Internet connected computers worldwide. ¿McAfee claims that if you have installed McAfee SecurityCentre with anti-virus and anti-spyware and Firewall version 9.3 then you always have the most current security to combat the ever-evolving threats on the Internet for the duration of the subscription¿. In this paper, we present our findings regarding the effectiveness of McAfee SecurityCentre software against one of the most popular distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, namely ping-flood attack on the computer which has McAfee SecurityCentre installed. The McAfee SecurityCentre software has an in built firewall which can be activated to control and filter the inbound/outbound traffic. It can also block the ping requests in order to stop or subside the ping based DDoS Attacks. To test the McAfee Security Centre software, we created the ping traffic in the controlled lab environment of networking research Lab here at The University of Texas-Pan American. It was found that the McAfee Firewall software itself was incurring DoS (denial of service) by completely exhausting the available memory resources during its operation of stopping the external ping attack.

Distributed Denials of Service (DDoS) attacks are increasing over the Internet, where the attacker consumes all the resources of the network or the victim computer, thus preventing legitimate users from accessing the services. This paper compares the impact of a DDoS attack, called Land Attack, on popular operating systems such as ¿Windows XP¿, ¿windows Vista¿ and ¿Apple's Leopard¿. We investigate and compare the built-in ability of these operating systems in withstanding land attacks at different loads of Land Attack traffic. In this experiment, we measure the exhaustion of the computing resources, for the above mentioned operating systems under varying loads of the Land Attack traffic. Our results show that Windows XP operating system was most robust, and capable of surviving the ICMP-Land Attack when compared with Windows Vista and Apple's Leopard operating systems.

Apple's iMac computers are promoted by the Apple Inc. to be secure, safe, virus free and fast computers. In this experimental paper, we evaluate the security offered by the iMac computers with its usual Leopard Operating system, against ARP-based flooding attacks in a Gigabit LAN environment. We compared the effect of ARP attacks on Leopard OS against those on the Windows XP-SP2 when installed on the same iMac platform under the same network attack environment. ARP-based flooding attacks can originate in a LAN environment, which can impact a victim computer with a barrage of ARP requests, and there by exhausting resource of the victim computers in processing these requests. To study the impact on iMac computers, we created the ARP traffic in a controlled lab environment to test against iMac computer that first deployed Leopard OS and then later the same iMac platform was made to rather use Windows XP OS. It was found that the Apple's iMac computer using its usual Leopard operating system crashed even under low bandwidth of ARP-based attack traffic, requiring forced reboot of the iMac computer. Interestingly, when compared with Microsoft's Windows XP-SP2 operating system, deployed on the same iMac platform, the computer was able to sustain the attack and didn't crash. Our discovery of this vulnerability shows that Apple's popular operating systems namely Leopards commonly deployed on iMacs are prone to crash under ARP-based security attacks.

This study introduces a low cost technique for testing and monitoring process that can be applied specifically for Fiber-to-the-Home Passive Optical network (FTTH-PON). The simplest and low cost method would be using a Optical Power Meter (OPM) which is able to detect the total loss on the network. However, to identify faulty sections of a network, segmentation need to be done together with the optical power meter. Another testing and troubleshooting method would be using the Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). The OTDR within the network is able to detect the component that causes losses in the network. However, elements acting as a power splitter are not being able to be detected by the OTDR. Therefore, the Access Control system (ACS) is developed to bypass those elements and allows the use of OTDR entirely. This method is proven to be a faster method than the first. Additionally, it can be upgraded to monitor the line status by accumulate all the result in one display computer screen. But this mechanism is not interested to be discussed detail in this study. The new configuration of FTTH is named as modified FTTH. In the end, we compare the installation cost between the conventional and modified FTTH for different network size according to number of users. © Asian network for Scientific Information.

With the rapid evolution of network speed from 1Gbps to 10Gbps, a wide spectrum of research has been done on TCP/IP to improve its processing efficiency on general purpose processors. However, most of them did studies only from the performance perspective and ignored its power efficiency. As power has become a major concern in data centers, where servers are often interconnected with 10GbE, it becomes critical to understand power efficiency of TCP/IP packet processing over 10GbE. In this paper, we extensively examine power consumption of TCP/IP packet processing over 10GbE on Intel Nehalem platforms across a range of I/O sizes by using a power analyzer. In order to understand the power consumption, we use an external Data Acquisition system (DAQ) to obtain a breakdown of power consumption for individual hardware components such as CPU, memory and NIC etc. In addition, as integrated NIC architectures are gaining more attention in high-end servers, we also study power consumption of TCP/IP packet processing on an integrated NIC by using a Sun Niagara 2 processor with two integrated 10GbE NICs. We carefully compare the power efficiency of using an integrated NIC with using a PCI-E based discrete NIC. We make many new observations as follows: 1) Unlike 1GbE NICs, 10GbE NICs have high idle power dissipation, and TCP/IP packet processing over 10GbE consumes significant dynamic power. 2) Our power breakdown reveals that CPU is the major source of the dynamic power consumption, followed by memory. As the I/O size increases, the CPU power consumption reduces but the memory power consumption grows. Compared to CPU and memory, NIC has low dynamic power consumption. 3) Large I/O sizes are much more power efficient than small I/O sizes. 4) While integrating a 10GbE NIC slightly increases CPU power consumption, it not only reduces system idle power dissipation due to elimination of PCI-E interface in NICs, but also achieves dynamic power savings due to better processing efficienc
