This study presents a method based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and a spatial template-based matching approach to extract sensorimotor oscillatory activities from multi-channel magnetoencephalographic (MEG) measurements during right index finger lifting. The longitudinal gradiometer of the sensor unit which presents most prominent SEF was selected on which each single-trial recording was decomposed into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The correlation between each IMF of the selected channel and raw data on other channels were created and represented as a spatial map. The sensorimotor-related IMFs with corresponding correlational spatial map exhibiting large values on primary sensorimotor area (SMI) were selected via spatial-template matching process. Trial-specific alpha and beta bands were determined in sensorimotor-related oscillatory activities using a two-spectrum comparison between the spectra obtained from baseline period (-4 to -3 s) and movement-onset period (-0.5 to 0.5 s). Sensorimotor-related oscillatory activities were filtered within the trial-specific frequency bands to resolve task-related oscillatory activities. Results demonstrated that the optimal phase and amplitude information were preserved not only for alpha suppression (event-related desynchronization) and beta rebound (event-related synchronization) but also for profound analysis of subtle dynamics across trials. The retention of high SNR in the extracted oscillatory activities allow various methods of source estimation that can be applied to study the intricate brain dynamics of motor control mechanisms. The present study enables the possibility of investigating cortical pathophysiology of movement disorder on a trial-by-trial basis which also permits an effective alternative for participants or patients who can not endure lengthy procedures or are incapable of sustaining long experiments. © 2009 Biomedical engineering Society.

The paper presents a joint state and unmeasured input estimation technique for a special class of nonlinear second order macroscopic traffic model. The freeway traffic system is transformed into a quasi and affine approximate Lin- ear Parameter Varying (LPV) form. Observer design technique is formulated using off-line optimization problem subjected to Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions, considering uncertain scheduling parameters. Furthermore, locally designed state estimators are interconnected to cover multiple freeway sections. The elaborated method is validated using real traffic measurements. © 2009 EUCA.

This paper focuses on developing a passive in-line monitoring (PIM) device prototype, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for in-service monitoring and failure identifying against fiber fault in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. This device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the technicians to simply connect it to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine the location of break point before repairing. A passive taper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

We propose a programmable and scalable traffic management scheme. Programmable traffic management at high-speed routers is difficult because programmability and high-speed packet processing have involved a serious tradeoff. To attain both, the new scheme combines control programs at a control server and simple packet handling functions, such as sampling packet headers and discarding packets, at routers. Therefore, by installing appropriate control programs into the server, a variety of active queue management schemes, per-flow bandwidth management schemes, DoS mitigation schemes, and so on, are achieved. One of the main contributions of this paper is its proposal of a statistical scheme for handling flows. As only a fraction of complete flow information stored at the control server is loaded into the router's flow table and it is replaced cyclically, the proposed scheme scales more than the router's flow table capacity. Our simulation results indicate that the scheme provides efficient traffic management, per-flow WFQ emulation in our example, even with very small flow tables compared to the number of concurrently active flows. Furthermore, we discuss implementation issues with the proposed scheme and reveal that the processing cost at the server and router is sufficiently small for use with 10 Gbps links.

Recently it has been predicted that materials with exceptionally strong optical activity may also possess a negative refractive index, allowing the realization of superlenses for super-resolution imaging and data storage applications. Here we demonstrate experimentally and numerically that a chirality-induced negative index of refraction is possible. A negative index of refraction due to three-dimensional chirality is demonstrated for a bilayered metamaterial based on pairs of mutually twisted planar metal patterns in parallel planes, which also shows negative electric and magnetic responses and exceptionally strong optical activity and circular dichroism. Multilayered forms of the metamaterial are found to be suitable for use as ultrathin polarization rotators and circular polarizers for practical applications.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death for men. However, early detection before cancer spreads beyond the prostate can reduce the mortality. Therefore, in vivo imaging techniques play an important role to localize the prostate cancer for treatment. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed to localize prostate cancer, the studies on automated localization with multispectral MRI have been limited. In this study we propose combining the pharmacokinetic parameters derived from DCE MRI with T2 MRI and DWI. We also propose to use relevance vector machines (RVM) for automatic prostate cancer localization, compare its performance to support vector machines (SVM) and show that RVM can produce more accurate and more efficient segmentation results than SVM for automated prostate cancer localization with multispectral MRI.

Security is a very important issue in information processing, especially in open network environments like the Internet. The Common Criteria (CC) is the standard requirements catalogue for the evaluation of security critical systems. Using the CC, a large number of security requirements on the system itself and on the system development can be defined. However, the CC does not give methodological support. In this paper, we show how to integrate security aspects into the verification and validation of software engineering processes and develop a new integrated approach for verification and validation of software and security issues based on common criteria standard. The activities and documents from the Common Criteria are tightly intertwined with the verification techniques, which improves the security of the developed system and reduces the cost and effort. We choose IEEE standard of software verification and validation as reference information of V&V and demonstrate our ideas by means of a case-study, the Electronic Purse Card system.

This article reports the first high time resolution measurements of gigantic jets from the Imager of Sprites and Upper Atmospheric Lightning (ISUAL) experiment. The velocity of the upward propagating fully developed jet stage of the gigantic jets was ∼10⁷ m s^-1, which is similar to that observed for downward sprite streamers. Analysis of spectral ratios for the fully developed jet emissions gives a reduced E field of 400-655 Td and average electron energy of 8.5-12.3 eV. These values are higher than those in the sprites but are similar to those predicted by streamer models, which implies the existence of streamer tips in fully developed jets. The gigantic jets studied here all contained two distinct photometric peaks. The first peak is from the fully developed jet, which steadily propagates from the cloud top (∼20 km) to the lower ionosphere at ∼90 km. We suggest that the second photometric peak, which occurs ∼lms after the first peak, is from a current wave or potential wave-enhanced emissions that originate at an altitude of ∼50 km and extend toward the cloud top. We propose that the fully developed jet serves as an extension of the local ionosphere and produces a lowered ionosphere boundary. As the attachment processes remove the charges, the boundary of the local ionosphere moves up. The current in the channel persists and its contact point with the ionosphere moves upward, which produces the upward surging trailing jets. Imager and photometer data indicate that the lightning activity associated with the gigantic jets likely is in-cloud, and thus the initiation of the gigantic jets is not directly associated with cloud-to-ground discharges. Visual data carried on video sensor networks (VSNs) creates unique challenges due to the limited hardware of the sensors. In this paper, we study the capabilities of VSNs using currently available technology by investigating how the duty cycle of the sleep schedule and the frame rate affect the overall performance of a VSN. The trade-off between sensor video quality and the received frame rate at the sink is depicted which is an important measure for the application level performance. Using extensive simulations run with realistic parameters, it is shown that increasing the video quality to enhance the application level detection and/or tracking performance works only up to a certain extent.
