Ambient intelligence technologies in support of shipping markets' operations

The Intelligent Maritime Environment (i-MARE) framework and technological platform we introduce in our paper conceptualize an innovative, collaborative and context-aware network business model for cargo shipping. The i-MARE framework considers ambient-intelligence technologies, in particular an ontology-derived and web semantics based interoperability framework and application modules for key shipping process areas, namely the maritime regulations-rules compliance and port operations support. We explain how the improvement of the later operations can be realized in terms of the proposed technological platform towards the effective matching of individual companies' capabilities and needs with market demands for cargo shipping. Whereas cargo shipping refers to a number of different markets, our framework is generic and adaptable to the requirements of particular sectors, for instance ocean bulk shipping or short sea container shipping. The framework presented is proposed for testing and application in the maritime sector, whereas in our paper we examine, as a proof of concept, short sea shipping business cases and a normative modelling and architectural solution. © 2006.

Mobile RFID, the technology of a cellular phone equipped with a RFID reader, allows users to read RFID tags anywhere. However, signals from more than two readers can interfere with one another, i.e., reader collision problem; reliable tag reading is necessary. This paper proposes Gentle protocol to use beacon messages and multi-channel for increasing throughput. In addition, Gentle protocol can put tag ID information into the beacon message and share it among close readers. Simulation results show that Gentle protocol outperforms existing reader anti-collision protocols.

In hard-real-time environment, scheduling periodic tasks upon multiprocessors is one of the most popular problems where uniform multiprocessor scheduling is a well-known one. In this platform, execution time of each task in one processor is proportional to the computing capacity of this processor. From previous works, we know there are only approximate feasible solutions for on-line scheduling on uniform multiprocessors. In this paper, with task migration, we first present a novel model called T-Ler plane to describe the behavior of tasks and processors, and two optimal on-line algorithms based on T-Ler plane to schedule real-time tasks with dynamic-priority assignment on uniform multiprocessors. To make it practical and to reduce context switches, we also present a polynomial-time algorithm to bound the times of rescheduling in a T-Ler plane. Since task migration is easier in SOC multicore processors, our result might be applicable and adapted to many asymmetric multicore platforms.

TCP-SYN attack is one of the commonly used DDoS attacks aimed at bringing down a computer system connected to Internet. There has been an increased targeting of Windows end-users and servers. The attackers and intruders are leveraging easily identifiable network blocks to target and exploit Windows end-user servers and computer systems. In order to provide some level of security and protection against security attacks, the Microsoft's Windows XP operating systems were designed with an additional level of security. The initial Microsoft's windows XP without service pack2 (SP2) provided windows firewall with some security features. The later version of Microsoft's windows XP with SP2 intends to provide enhanced security features to prevent and mitigate the adverse effect of security attacks on the host computer systems. In this experimental paper, we set out to conduct real TCP-SYN attacks on computer systems in a controlled lab environment and measure the effectiveness of Microsoft's windows XP without SP2, and with SP2 in preventing TCP-SYN attacks. The Windows firewall (without SP2) was found to be not effective against the TCP-SYN attacks. However, the later version of Microsoft's Windows XP with SP2 was found to significantly help mitigate the adverse effect of the TCP SYN attacks on Windows based computer systems.

E-learning content creation is not an easy task, but its evaluation is even more complex. In order to evaluate if the content is adequate to the studentspsila needs, it would be helpful to know how the student assimilated the learning content, how he/she reacted to it and the period of time spent on the learning object. Besides, considering the different cognitive features of learning and the possibility of adjusting the didactic content, it could help teacherpsilas evaluation in an available online course. This work describes a monitoring system (Msys) able to track the level of utilization of studentpsilas activities, and presents summarized and comparative results to the teacher and to the student. This paper describes how the MSys tool was created using current standards on digital content construction, defining functional requirements of interface to its development, presenting a proof-of concept and how it could be integrate to online learning systems, providing benefits to the teacherpsilas evaluation.

Cooperation and sharing of resources are needed urgently between domains in pervasive computing environment, so building an effective cross-domain authorization model become a key issue. The IRBAC 2000 model accomplish flexibly interoperation by dynamic inter-domain role mapping, but how to manage the associations is not discussed, which may cause security problems. Algorithms to detect these security issues are proposed, and the experimental results show that our algorithms can improve the security of the model, so the algorithms can be applied as a security checking mechanism during role mapping in pervasive computing environments.

This paper describes the vertical handover architecture with low latency handover for mobile terminals which supports interworking between heterogeneous networks. The vertical handover architecture defines handover-related modules for mobile terminal and the handover switching flows among them. We adapt low latency handover method to mobile IP for reducing handover time. The architecture is designed to be easily extended to support more than two heterogeneous networks, so that it is easy to apply architecture to terminals that have multiple heterogeneous wireless network interfaces. We analyze the performance of handover method in terms of handover delay time using test bed system.

This paper describes the design and implementation of mobile location-awareness service based on embedded Linux. In mobile location-awareness, the picture and GPS information at mobile terminal are stored on server through wireless network. With the mobile location-awareness, user can easily identify the location where the picture was taken on through Yahoo map. The implemented mobile location-awareness also helps user to manage pictures according to the location where they were taken and visit that place again. We verified functions of mobile location-awareness using MCC mobile terminal made by ETRI.

This paper describes the design and implementation of embedded Linux based Mobile Broadcasting Service which supports personal broadcasting in wireless network environment. The Mobile Broadcasting Service makes possible for mobile user to make contents using his own terminal while he is moving or he is in a place, and send the created contents to server in real-time which has his blog Web page. All users connected to the his blog Web page can look and listen the contents in real-time. We verify the Mobile Broadcasting functions using MCC mobile terminal made by ETRI.

This paper describes the design and implementation of Mobile Cobrowsing Service based on embedded Linux Mobile Cobrowsing supports the sharing of same web page among mobile users. For effective web page sharing among mobile users, Mobile Cobrowsing provides the synchronization of web page movement, synchronization of web page scroll, synchronization of annotation, and management of control authority. It also provides the voice chatting function among users. Mobile Cobrowsing is developed on MCC mobile terminal made by ETRI and we verify the Mobile Cobrowsing service using web page contents.
