We studied the possibility of using wireless sensor networks for vehicle identification. It is interesting because it is not only challenging but also practical. It is challenging to develop algorithms and/or protocols for sensor nodes to execute since each sensor node has limited computation and communication capabilities, and these limitations prohibit the use of algorithms and/or protocols developed for conventional computer and networks. It is practical since each sensor is dispensable and easily deployable, yet it can do meaningful works when it is collaborated as a networked cluster. Our goal is to identify vehicles in real time using acoustic signal sensors and wireless networks. Our contribution in this paper is two fold. First, we develop a simple vehicle sound identification algorithm enough to be implemented on capacity limited sensor nodes. Second, we propose architecture and protocols of wireless sensor networks for vehicle identification using this developed sound classification algorithm. Our preliminary results show the proposed architecture and protocols are promising.

A fully-distributed collaborative multi-target tracking framework that eliminates the need for a central data associaton or a central coordinating node for wireless sensor networks is defined. Details of the distributed data association architecture, which is more feasible than the ones relying on a coordinating entity, is described. It is shown that for target tracking applications, the collaboration improves the target localization performance of the distributed data collecting devices. In order to reduce the communication energy exhausted for collaboration, the performance of the collaboration logic manager is examined. Simulation results show that collaborating about a single target information is a rational decision. The problem of deciding which target information to collaborate among the detected targets arises. A mutual information based metric is shown to be a good candidate for deciding on the target which the sensor will collaborate about with the network.

InfiniBand is becoming increasingly popular in the area of cluster computing due to its open standard and high performance. I/O interfaces like PCI-express and GX+ are being introduced as next generation technologies to drive InfiniBand with very high throughput. HCAs with throughput of 8x on PCI-express have become available. Recently, support for HCAs with 12x throughput on GX+ has been announced. In this paper, we design a message passing interface (MPI) on IBM 12x dual-port HCAs, which consist of multiple send/recv engines per port. We propose and study the impact of various communication scheduling policies (binding, striping and round robin). Based on this study, we present a new policy, EPC (enhanced point-to-point and collective), which incorporates different kinds of communication patterns; point-to-point (blocking, non-blocking) and collective communication, for data transfer. We implement our design and evaluate it with micro-benchmarks, collective communication and NAS parallel benchmarks. Using EPC on a 12x InfiniBand cluster with one HCA and one port, we can improve the performance by 41% with pingpong latency test and 63-65% with the unidirectional and bi-directional bandwidth tests, compared with the default single-rail MPI implementation. Our evaluation on NAS parallel benchmarks shows an improvement of 7-13% in execution time for integer sort and Fourier transform.

Recently, network security has become an extremely vital issue that beckons the development of accurate and efficient solutions capable of effectively defending our network systems and the valuable information journeying through them. In this article, a distributed multiagent intrusion detection system (IDS) architecture is proposed, which attempts to provide an accurate and lightweight solution to network intrusion detection by tackling issues associated with the design of a distributed multiagent system, such as poor system scalability and the requirements of excessive processing power and memory storage. The proposed IDS architecture consists of (i) the Host layer with lightweight host agents that perform anomaly detection in network connections to their respective hosts, and (ii) the Classification layer whose main functions are to perform misuse detection for the host agents, detect distributed attacks, and disseminate network security status information to the whole network. The intrusion detection task is achieved through the employment of the lightweight Adaptive Sub-Eigenspace Modeling (ASEM)-based anomaly and misuse detection schemes. Promising experimental results indicate that ASEM-based schemes outperform the KNN and LOF algorithms, with high detection rates and low false alarm rates in the anomaly detection task, and outperform several well-known supervised classification methods such as C4.5 Decision Tree, SVM, NN, KNN, Logistic, and Decision Table (DT) in the misuse detection task. To assess the performance in a real-world scenario, the Relative Assumption Model, feature extraction techniques, and common network attack generation tools are employed to generate normal and anomalous traffic in a private LAN testbed. Furthermore, the scalability performance of the proposed IDS architecture is investigated through the simulation of the proposed agent communication scheme, and satisfactory linear relationships for both degradation of system response time

Detecting errors early within the development process for an embedded system assists a developer in avoiding excessive error correction costs and minimizing catastrophic losses resulting from failures in deployed systems. Towards that end, this paper presents i2MAP, an iterative and incremental goal-driven process for constructing an analysis-level UML model of an embedded system. The UML model is formally analyzed for adherence to the behavioral properties captured in a companion goal model. The process uses goal modeling to capture the requirements of the system, and uses UML to capture analysis-level structural and behavioral information. Both types of i2MAP models can be used to drive a rigorous approach to model-driven development of embedded systems. In this paper, we illustrate the i2MAP process and the accompanying tool suite in the development of an embedded system model for an adaptive light control system.

This paper describes the design and implementations of the application service based on embedded Linux; personal voice recorder (PVR) which uses WiBro network for data communications and CDMA network for voice communications. PVR consists of client and server. PVR client send CDMA voice data to PVR server located in the Internet through WiBro network. Then, PVR server converts voice data to wave form and stores it. In case of shortage of storage space on terminal, PVR makes user to store voice data.

As a next generation service, immersive media is the most attractive one, which is indispensable for supporting human tele-presence and virtual lab. The immersive media service requires high standards on interactive response delay and synchronization among media for comfortable communication in users' perspective. To measure the customer's experiences from the network provider side, we propose a new measure of quality of experience (QoE), the distortion ratio of service datum (DRS), by calculating how much original statistical property of the service datum is distorted at the receiver end. DRS can make possible compare the QoEs among the heterogeneous services by providing the deterministic value. We also suggest a connection admission control algorithm for supporting the stringent QoE in the virtually synchronized packet network. With the statistical on-off flow description, the loads on a link after aggregating traffic flows can be estimated in terms of probability. According to the level of QoE, admission control algorithm guarantees the deterministic latency in probabilistic manner, while maximizing the usage of network resources.

An optimal control method for two-dimensional (2-D) linear systems with variable coefficients and free boundary conditions in Roesser's model is proposed in this paper. Based on Roesser's model, an equivalent general 1-D model of the 2-D system is presented, and the problem of minimizing a 2-D linear quadratic (LQ) cost function is solved for the case where complete state information is available. The solution is obtained by using the proposed dynamic programming in 1-D descriptor form to solve the Riccati equation and then arriving at the optimal control law and minimum cost. The proposed control methodology can be applied to discrete-time models of systems described by partial differential equations and can also be used in the field of signal processing.

Defect tracking is important in evaluating the reliability of the software used in telecommunication networks. Bio-inspired integrated approaches and embedded chips have been developed and implemented to track improvements in the software reliability. In this paper, the integrated model for the failure discovery during testing is combined with bio-inspired approaches using the recurrent dynamic neural network (RDNN) with parametric adjustments and wavelets as basis; and the adaptive parameters RDNN (ARDNN) where the criterion is to minimize the error in failure intensity estimation, subject to the model constraints. Simulation results favor our adaptive recurrent dynamic neural network, with reduced error from 88% to 1.25 –to- 8% based on the number of iterations in the training phase.. The ARDNN approach provides optimum solution to the dynamic problem at hand since it iterates on the shape of the wavelet basis and provide adequate recovery of the data in the form of piecewise linear differential.

This paper presents the components and overall architecture of the ubiquitous robot (Ubibot) system developed to demonstrate ubiquitous robotics, a new paradigm for integrated services. The system has been developed on the basis of the definition of the ubiquitous robot as that of encompassing the software robot Sobot, embedded robot Embot and the mobile robot Mobot. This tripartite partition, which independently manifests intelligence, perception and action, enables the abstraction of intelligence through the standardization of sensory data and motor or action commands. The Ubibot system itself is introduced along with its component subsystems of Embots, the position Embot, vision Embot and sound Embot, the Mobots of Mybot and HSR, the Sobot, Rity, a virtual pet modeled as an artificial creature, and finally the middleware which seamlessly enables interconnection between other components. Three kinds of experiments are devised to demonstrate the fundamental features, of calm sensing, context awareness and seamless service transcending the spatial limitations in the abilities of earlier generation personal robots. The experiments demonstrate the proof of concept of this powerful new paradigm which shows great promise.
