Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere and Clouds

The cloud microphysical properties retrieved from MODIS sub-sampling radiance dataset (MOD02SSH) over the extended GAME region are shown in this paper. The spatial distributions and temporal variations of the cloud optical thickness (τc) and effective particle radius (re), are important observation targets to understand the role of clouds in the radiation budget estimations, especially in the cloud-aerosol interaction studies, because they will have information of cloud growth process. Thus, the wide-area and relatively high-temporal observations of the cloud properties are necessary. The most passed researches that retrieved near-global distributions of the cloud properties, used the reduced data volume satellite radiance subset, such as the globally map-projected radiances dataset at the discretized degrees in latitude and longitude (e.g. 0.5 degrees) or narrow-swath (around nadir) radiance subset. In fact, these subsets reduced the computing time but unexpectedly reduced the observation samplings. In this study, we used MODIS 5-km subsampling radiance subsets (MOD02SSH) for the retrievals. The MOD02SSH conserves scene texture with moderately reduced data volume of 1/25 from original MODIS scene, so that they will be suitable for the more precise estimations of τc and re over synoptic to global scale. We retrieved τc and re from one-month MOD02SSH over the extended GAME region (60E-180E longitude and 20S to 60N latitude) in July 2004. In the obtained τc versus re scatter plots, we found interesting features that will be explained as the cloud properties under the pristine and polluted environments in the region. The non-hydrostatic spectral microphysics cloud model simulates these phenomena well. In the presentation, we will discuss about the MODIS radiance dataset for the cloud analysis, retrieval algorithm, then show the typical and interesting features appeared in observed τc-re scatter plots over the extended GAME regions.

For target tracking applications, small wireless sensors provide accurate information since they can be deployed and operated near the phenomenon. These sensing devices have the opportunity of collaboration amongst themselves to improve the target localization and tracking accuracies. Distributed data fusion architecture provides a collaborative tracking framework. Due to the energy constraints of these small, sensing and wireless communicating devices, a common trend is to put some of them into a dormant state. In addition to a selective sensor activation strategy based on the maximum mutual information metric, in this paper, we devise the Information-Controlled Transmission Power (ICTP) adjustment in order to improve the energy savings. The essence of the proposed ICTP scheme for collaborative target tracking lies behind the idea that the sensors with more information use higher transmission powers than the sensors with less information in order to share their target state information with the neighboring sensors.

This paper proposes a novel proxy network topology. The proposed network topology exhibits several attributes that strengthen the proxy network's resistance to DoS attacks. Additionally, a novel reconfiguration algorithm for a class of proxy network topologies is proposed, and shown to decrease the topologies' vulnerability to DoS attacks. Proxy networks enable applications to communicate with users without disclosing their IP's. An application's resistance to DoS attacks is improved by hiding it behind a proxy network. We evaluate the proposed topology's fault tolerance and its effectiveness in the resistance to DoS attacks

This paper describes the design and implementations of the first application service based on embedded Linux; Mobile Teller which uses WiBro network for data communications and CDMA network for voice communications. When a sender on a dual-mode terminal types texts, the texts are transmitted to a TTS server located in the Internet through WiBro network. Subsequently, the TTS server changes the texts into voices and transmits the voice data to the dual-mode terminal. At last the dual-mode terminal sends the voice to the receiver through the CDMA network. In case of noisy environment, Mobile Teller makes user to voice communication

RapidHDL is introduced as a new object oriented hardware description library for C# developers. RapidHDL seeks to speed up FPGA development by applying best practices used in software engineering to increase productivity. Logic is rapidly defined in component classes using a structure of truth-table definitions, sink nodes, source nodes, and pass-through nodes. Hardware simulation co-runs with C# programs, and a linked-list of clock events simulates propagation delays. A standardized testing framework allows the developer to write test benches, hardware, and software in a single language. Algorithms are presented to automatically transform RapidHDL objects to Verilog netlist that can be synthesized by calling 3rd party tools

Measured disturbance estimation for model predictive controller

This paper presents the Model Predictive Controller design process when an unknown input observer provides measured disturbance form unmeasured one. Instead of using an unmeasured disturbance dynamic implemented into the controller, the joint observer-controller uses the estimated measured exogenous disturbance signal. Furthermore the observer can send an alarm sign to the supervisor. The detection and isolation of the unmeasured disturbance is computed by the geometric based strategy called Fundamental Problem in Residual Generation. Better the estimation of the disturbance is, better the rejection of the controller. The measured disturbance could be anticipated. A numerical example explains the effectiveness of the estimation and the usage of the unmeasured disturbance detection. Copyright © 2006 SoftMotor Ltd.

In this paper, design principles and application of a thin and flexible intravascular top hat monopole probe with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improved longitudinal and radial coverage are described and compared with the conventional monopole probe. The top hat probe is constructed by removing a segment of the shield of a coaxial cable. A flexible thin copper foil in contact with the inner conductor of the cable is added to the end section of the cable. The copper foil acts as an antenna top hat load increasing the uniformity of the current distribution on the probe and establishes a uniform region of SNR distribution around the probe. Improvement of the SNR distribution of the top hat probe relative to the conventional monopole probe is evaluated using quantitative indices. Experimental results show that for the top hat probe, the ratio of the maximum image SNR to its relative standard deviation (SR) is 2.73 times higher than that of a conventional probe. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper describes a hands-free speech recognition technique based on acoustic model adaptation to reverberant speech. In hands-free speech recognition, the recognition accuracy is degraded by reverberation, since each segment of speech is affected by the reflection energy of the preceding segment. To compensate for the reflection signal we introduce a frame-by-frame adaptation method adding the reflection signal to the means of the acoustic model. The reflection signal is approximated by a first-order linear prediction from the observation signal at the preceding frame, and the linear prediction coefficient is estimated with a maximum likelihood method by using the EM algorithm, which maximizes the likelihood of the adaptation data. Its effectiveness is confirmed by word recognition experiments on reverberant speech. Copyright © 2006 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

We have developed scanning laser range sensor called "SOKUIKI" sensor which is ultra-small scanning laser range sensor adopted for various types of mobile robots as we have already published. As a sensor for environment recognition, we thought the sensor must have not only outputting distance data but also another helpful function for mobile robots. So it was considered that what kind of advanced functions should be provided to SOKUIKI sensor. As a result two most important purposes were acquired. 1. Variation on its distance data and method to get the data. 2. The function for prevention of optical interference between sensors. These rolls were installed to the sensor, and confirmed their effect. This paper describes its result and proposes sensor communication interface protocol (SCIP) which is developed as new command system just for SOKUIKI sensor
