As more and more companies are relying on their suppliers to provide raw materials or component parts, effective coordination and inventory management of supply chain members became critical issues. Various methods including information sharing and postponing strategy have been explored to improve supply chain performance. However, questions regarding what information to share and the benefits under different conditions for different members are not fully understood. This paper presents a simulation study on a three-level infinite capacity supply chain through a systematic design of experiments. Independent variables include lead times, information sharing patterns, demand uncertainties, and service levels. It is shown through the analysis of means and the analysis of variance that one-way full information sharing is sufficient to achieve good performance. The types of benefit received by different members, however, are different. Furthermore, as more information is shared, the benefit from postponing customization decreases.

The route computing overhead caused by on-demand calculation of QoS routes, especially in large networks with heavy traffic, is a concern and can cause scalability problems. This paper introduces a distributed cache architecture to reduce the route computing load, caused by execution of QoS routing algorithms. The distributed nature of the proposed cache architecture facilitates its deployment in large networks. To maximize the performance of the distributed cache architecture, cache snooping has been proposed to alleviate the effects of changes in the network states. In performance evaluation of the proposed distributed cache architecture, we use a broad range of realistic network topologies, network traffic conditions, routing protocols, and aggregation techniques to evaluate different aspects of the proposed cache architecture under different conditions. The results confirm that the distributed cache architecture can significantly reduce the route computing overhead. In addition, our results suggest that the cache snooping can significantly increase the overall routing performance, especially in the presence of highly inaccurate network state information.

We have developed a novel algorithm to adjust link-bandwidths of a given multicast tree, which sends a message with size r from a source to a multiple destinations taking into consideration pipelined routing architecture for the mobile environment. The algorithm that we have developed tries to minimize the end-to-end delay time and resources such as bandwidths of a multicast tree, and performs admirably well in any given multicast tree. Our evaluation shows that the proposed algorithm dramatically reduces the end-to-end delay time and resources reserved to satisfy the time-constraints. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

The IP packets from a source are suitably forwarded by the routers along the path(s) to the destination. The packets destined to the routers themselves are called non-forwarding packets, and their processing is crucial to the overall speed of IP routers. An architecture is proposed here for efficiently handling the non-forwarding packets for high-speed routers. This architecture includes the Inter-Processor Communication Message Protocol for internal communication needed within the router for distributed processing of the nonforwarded packets. Our implementation results show that this architecture improves the processing speed by 10% as compared to the existing mechanism based on UDP/IP. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

We report the development of an artificial haircell (AHC) fabricated using two methods: (1) silicon bulk micromachining and (2) polymer surface micromachining. Both methods leverage efficient three dimensional assembly of microstructures. The AHC is modeled after biological hair cells, a common and versatile mechanoreceptor in biology. The design, fabrication process, along with testing results are discussed in the paper.

A hierarchical approach for the abstraction of digital VLSICs is presented. Circuit layout is hierarchically abstracted into logical constructs of binary tree structures, which may be manipulated to extract circuit functionality for the purpose of verifying design correctness. We investigate and compare a few parallel preconditioning techniques in the iterative solution of large sparse linear systems arising from solid Earth simulation with and without using contact information in the domain partitioning process. Previous studies are focused on using static or matrix pattern based incomplete LU (ILU) preconditioners in a localized preconditioner implementation. Our current studies are concerned with preconditioner performance for solving two different cases with and without known contact information. For the cases with contact information, we use localized threshold value based incomplete LU (ILUT) preconditioner to improve efficiency. For the cases without contact information, we use a global sparse approximate inverse preconditioner with a static sparsity pattern to achieve robustness. Numerical results from simulating ground motion on a parallel supercomputer are given to compare the effectiveness of these parallel preconditioning techniques.

The paradigm of design for biosystem-on-a-chip (BioSoC), is that multidisciplinary skills are required. Thus, the educational goals are to develop an understanding of micro/macro collaboration along with the ability to apply and use multidisciplinary skills for the design and performance evaluation of a "biosystem on a chip". The need for the architectural design of the BioSoC addresses the next-generation of intelligent information processing systems.

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the power-supply voltage (IR) drop scaling in DSM technologies. For the first time, the effects of temperature, electromigration and interconnect technology scaling (including resistivity increase of Cu interconnects due to electron surface scattering and finite barrier thickness) are taken into consideration during this analysis. It is shown that the IR-drop effect in the power/ground (P/G) network increases rapidly with technology scaling, and using well-known counter measures such as wire-sizing and decoupling capacitor insertion with resource allocation schemes that are typically used in the present designs may not be sufficient to limit the voltage fluctuations over the power grid for future technologies. It is also shown that such voltage drops on power lines of switching devices in a clock network can introduce significant amount of skew which in turn degrades the signal integrity.

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.
