This paper describes model-based, active control of an aftertreatment system for a spark ignition engine equipped with a three-way catalyst (TWC) and pre- and post-TWC oxygen sensors. A controller is designed to manage the oxygen storage level in the TWC in order to maximize the simultaneous conversion efficiencies of oxides of nitrogen, NO/sub x/, unburned hydrocarbons, HC, and carbon monoxide, CO. Linear exhaust gas oxygen sensors (UEGOs) are used to measure pre- and post-catalyst A/F. The pre-catalyst A/F measurement is assumed to be biased in addition to being corrupted by zero-mean noise, while the post-catalyst measurement is assumed to be only corrupted by zero-mean noise. A series controller configuration is adopted. The upstream controller provides relatively rapid response to disturbances, while the downstream controller uses an extended Kalman filter (observer) to estimate the relative oxygen level. The estimated value of oxygen storage is then used to regulate the relative oxygen level of the TWC to 50%. The performance and robustness of the proposed control system in the face of noise and model uncertainty are evaluated through extensive simulations.

Recent researches in the area of safety engineering highlighted the role of automated (computer-aided) tools in managing plant enterprise safety activities. This research has been carried out as collaboration with industry to design a computer-aided plant enterprise safety management system called CAPE-SAFE. The solution has been proposed to fulfill the need for standard and integrated safety management system that covers all aspects of plant enterprise safety. The proposed solution is integrated with other systems and components within plant enterprise engineering environment (PEEE) to enable exchanging and sharing lifecycle information and knowledge. The information system structure of the proposed solution has been presented as well as the design framework of the system components and modules. Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) continuous plant is used as a case study to illustrate the mechanism of CAPE-SAFE and to describe the interaction with other components within PEEE. The proposed solution will help in reducing the overall operating cost as well as the risk associated with plant operation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Numerical calculations have been performed for polarization insensitive amplifiers in AlInGaAs material system for the 1550 nm wavelength window. SOAs fabricated and tested at 1527 nm show a maximum gain difference of 0.9 dB at 60 mA of drive current between the TE and the TM modes. A polarization insensitive spectral bandwidth of 40 nm was observed where the gain difference between the two polarizations was found to be less than 1 dB.

In this paper, we propose a new information theoretic network growing algorithm. The new approach is called greedy information acquisition, because networks try to absorb as much information as possible in every stage of learning. In the first stage, two competitive units compete with each other by maximizing mutual information. In the successive stages, new competitive units are gradually added and information is maximized. Through greedy information maximization, different sets of important features in input patterns can be cumulatively discovered in successive stages. We applied our approach to a language classification problem. Experimental results confirmed that different features in input patterns are gradually discovered.

Dynamic process management is a much-needed feature for applications and tools development in Beowulf cluster environment. A welldefined and efficient dynamic process management in cluster middleware layer can simplify the programming task of parallel tool developers. This paper presents the design and implementation of dynamic process management in a cluster middleware called KSIX. KSIX provides a rich set of system call that handles rapid process creation, termination, and remote signal delivery. Moreover, KSIX also handles the correct redirection of standard input, standard output and standard error of process or group of processes. The experiment has been conducted and the results are presented to illustrate the performance of our implementation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

in this paper,we present a performance investigation of ATM LANs(Asynchronous Transfer Mode Local Area networks). Three ATM LANs have been studied by using computer simulation:LANE(ATM LAN Emulation),CLIP(Classical IP over ATM),and MPOA(Multi-Protocol over ATM).The performance of each scheme is investigated in terms of lime to deliver some amount of data where traffic load and end-to-end delay time conditions arc *** have found that LANE gives the best result among all of them due to its simple mechanism,while CLIP performs not as good as MPOA since CLIP requires a number of information ***, when traffic load is high and round trip time is large CLIP and MPOA perform similar.

One of the popular network security programs supporting host access control is the 'TCP Wrapper' (Venema, 1992). TCP Wrapper is a software-only system and many computers connected to the Internet are using it. However, TCP Wrapper does 'IP address-based' access control. The IP address is not such a reliable source when authenticating a host. We point out two possible attacks against the TCP Wrapper, propose a new way to prevent them, and describe the prototype implementation, Ethernet Wrapper. By adding an Ethernet address check, we augmented the TCP Wrapper. The test results showed that Ethernet Wrapper can prevent such attacks effectively.

This paper describes computational methods that have been developed to automatically detect and quantify corrosion on images of aircraft panels obtained using nondestructive inspection (NDI) techniques. Images obtained from NDI techniques are not directly suitable for corrosion analysis. We propose a multi-resolution wavelet analysis to segment the NDI images to isolate the corroded regions from the undamaged regions. Wavelet coefficients were extracted from each segment and subjected to a multivariate data analysis to obtain the most relevant features. These features are then used to identify the corroded region on the images and also to estimate the extent of damage, in terms of material loss, using backpropagation neural networks. Experiments were conducted to test the developed modules on images obtained from the Air Force research Lab in Dayton, Ohio. The results obtained prove the feasibility and robustness of our approach in detecting the damaged regions and for estimating the material loss due to corrosion.

Next generation wireless communication systems are expected to satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements by preventing call droppings which are caused by user mobility. Call admission control (CAC) is becoming more important in guaranteeing the QoS of calls. Since existing CAC schemes estimate future requirements and reserve bandwidth to guarantee a certain level of QoS, the bandwidth estimation method is very important in CAC schemes. Most conventional schemes use the movement information of individual mobile terminals (MTs) to estimate the bandwidth requirements. While these schemes estimate the future bandwidth usage relatively well, it requires a high computational overhead and lots of memory space to keep and update the movement information of each mobile terminal, and therefore is hard to implement. We propose a call admission control scheme, which estimates the future handoffs using the handoff histories between BSs and the MT conformity. The proposed scheme achieves a low dropping ratio and high bandwidth utilization keeping a low computational overhead. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through simulations.

The electromagnetic design procedure and laboratory test results are presented in this paper for a consequent pole permanent machine (CPPM) with field weakening capability. Due to its particular configuration, the CPPM allows one to easily control the air-gap flux in a wide range so that the speed range of the machine is increased. Two components of the flux: one-almost constant-coming from the permanent magnet located in the rotor surface of the machine, and the other-variable-coming from a field winding located in the middle of the stator, converge in the air-gap, characterizing the level of excitation of the machine. Preliminary 3D finite element analysis results establish that with 10% of the phase MMF, it is possible to vary the flux in a wide range. A 3 kW, 1000 to 3000 RPM velocity range, 8 pole and 32 AC volt generator using this configuration is tested to verify the flux control capability of this structure.
