Emerging parallel or distributed heterogeneous real-time computer systems with many disparate constraints and requirements would benefit from a unifying and comprehensive systems engineering support in the design, testing and deployment phases, which interfaces with a human at a very high level and efficiently handles the system complexity. We present an approach to integration of: a compiler and constraint logic programming-based approach to design and engineering of complex real-time systems; and an online performance analysis and visualization technology with steering. An example distributed real-time system is used to help describe the integrated approach. Details are presented about how the involved technologies are used to help system developers and users achieve better system performance through on-line repair and reconfiguration.

Proactive detection of network failures and performance degradations is a key to rapid fault recovery and thus robust networking. The authors present methodologies and algorithms that were developed in order to enhance the proactive and adaptive detection of network/service anomalies (failures and performance degradations) in transaction based electronic commerce wide area networks (WANs). Specifically our proactive network/service anomaly detection method detects network/service performance degradations and failures in multiple service class networks, where performances of service classes are mutually dependent and strongly correlated, and where external or environmental factors (e.g., non-managed or non-monitored equipment within customer premises) can strongly impact network and service performances. The authors describe and implement algorithms that: (1) sample and convert raw transaction records to service class based performance data in which potential network anomalies are highlighted; (2) construct adaptive and service class based performance thresholds for real time detection of network and service anomalies; and (3) perform real time network anomaly detection.

Via experimental study, we illustrate how TCP modulates application traffic in such a way as to adversely affect network performance in a heterogeneous computing system. Even when aggregate application traffic smooths out as more applications' traffic are multiplexed, TCP induces burstiness into the aggregate traffic load, and thus hurts network performance. This burstiness is particularly bad in TCP Reno, and even worse when RED gateways are employed. Based on the results of this experimental study, we then develop a stochastic model for TCP Reno to demonstrate how the burstiness in TCP Reno can be modeled.

A new coarse frequency offset estimation algorithm is proposed which performs robust operation in the presence of a symbol timing offset in an allowed range. The effect of a symbol timing offset on estimating a coarse frequency offset is analyzed and the coherence phase bandwidth according to the allowed symbol timing offset is introduced. In addition, a new technique for performing the coarse frequency estimation using the coherence phase bandwidth is described. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm estimates a coarse frequency offset well under both AWGN and multipath channels even in the presence of the symbol timing offset within an allowed range.

Distributed computational grids depend on TCP to ensure reliable end-to-end communication between nodes across the wide-area network (WAN). Unfortunately, TCP performance can be abysmal even when buffers on the end hosts are manually optimized. Recent studies blame the self-similar nature of aggregate network traffic for TCP's poor performance because such traffic is not readily amenable to statistical multiplexing in the Internet, and hence computational *** this paper, we identify a source of self-similarity previously ignored, a source that is readily controllable-TCP. Via an experimental study, we examine the effects of the TCP stack on network traffic using different implementations of TCP. We show that even when aggregate application traffic ought to smooth out as more applications' traffic are multiplexed, TCP induces burstiness into the aggregate traffic load, thus adversely impacting network performance. Furthermore, our results indicate that TCP performance will worsen as WAN speeds continue to increase.

We describe the design and implementation of automated methodologies and tools that facilitate the implementation of an enhanced maintenance process in order to provide improved quality of service offered to the customers for the transaction access services (TAS) network. The emphasis of our work is placed on the identification, filtering and correlation of event occurrences that indicate problems that do not necessarily generate alarmed conditions on the conventional network management systems, and on the proactive service/fault management and detection based on dynamically defined violations of the base-lined performance profiles. Such an approach enhances considerably the network management and maintenance process, by identifying possible situations/incidents that may affect the network performance, and by correlating those incidents to the potentially affected elements, services and customer applications.

In plasma processing systems for large sized wafer, quick evacuation of reaction gas by making the process space gap narrow is required to realize higher productivity and better quality of microelectronic devices. The wafer must be placed closely to the antenna aperture in this case. A radial line slot antenna (RLSA) for surface wave coupled plasma (SWP) is a promising candidate to this end. A novel slot arrangement in the aperture, which consists of densely arrayed transverse slots, was fabricated and tested. A uniform, high electron density of 3/spl times/10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/ and large-area plasma under the condition of low electron temperature has already been realized by experiments. It dispenses with DC magnetic fields required in ECR systems. For further development of slot design as well as the mechanism extraction of plasma generation, this paper evaluates the electromagnetic near fields of SWP RLSAs. As the first step, antennas in free space without the plasma as well as the glass vacuum window, is analyzed using the periodic array model. The predicted near field distribution is compared with the experiments and reasonable agreement is reported.

We propose the adaptive cascade recursive least squares with subsection adaptation (CRLS-SA) algorithm for direct estimation of line spectral frequencies (LSF) for use in speech coding. The least squares based CRLS-SA algorithm has a low computational complexity since each section is adapted independently from other sections. Using CRLS-SA, the LSF can be obtained directly from the coefficients of each section of the CRLS-SA structure. Two CRLS-SA approaches can be used for estimating LSF: use CRLS-SA as an AR inverse filter and obtain the LSF by converting the coefficients of each second order filter using a look-up table or, alternatively, construct a cascade of second order LSF polynomials P(z) and Q(z), and adapt each using CRLS-SA. The results show that the LSF estimates from CRLS-SA are competitive with the results obtained by the popular autocorrelation method followed by approximation using Chebyshev polynomials. © 1999 IEEE.

We analyze the convergence behavior of the CRLS-SA algorithm for inverse filtering. The CRLS-SA is a cascade adaptive filter based on the RLS algorithm, with each section adapted independently based on global minimization. The subsection adaptation results in reduced computational complexity. The rate of convergence is evaluated based on the convergence time constant defined as the ratio of condition number and sensitivity. The smaller the convergence time constant, the faster the structure converges. Analysis and simulation explain and show that CRLS-SA exhibits faster convergence than the direct form RLS adaptive filter for speech type signals. © 1999 IEEE.

A microarchitecture of a processor named RAPTOR is described. RAPTOR is a single chip multiprocessor developed for exploiting thread-level parallelism. RAPTOR includes four identical processors, a graphics coprocessor, and an external cache controller. Each processor has a 16 KB primary cache and implements SPARC version 9 instruction set architecture. The external cache controller provides direct connection to a large external second level cache. RAPTOR is designed as a building block of multiprocessor systems such as symmetric multiprocessor machines. © 1999 IEEE.
