With the advent of smartphones, mobile-devices have evolved as powerful mini-computers. However, they still suffer from two intrinsic shortcomings, namely limited battery-power and inferior processors compared to their laptop counterparts. Several approaches based on cloud-computing have been suggested in the past to augment the performance of mobile devices and overcome these shortcomings. The utility of these approaches is demarcated by the maximum bandwidth and minimum latency that could be achieved in a cloud over the Internet. In this paper we propose MOCLO, a framework that operates upon locally-installed cloud called MOCLETS which is free from majority of shortcomings present in other Internet based cyber-foraging models. The paper also outlines the optimal architecture of mobile-applications to gain maximum benefit from MOCLO. A proof-of-concept prototype of MOCLO has also been implemented. Results have shown significant decrease in battery consumption and processing time of mobile applications leveraging MOCLO APIs. We also outline the significant cyber foraging frameworks proposed so far and where MOCLO stands in comparison to them. Towards the end we discuss the limitations of MOCLO and scalability issues and consider possible solutions for the same.

In a shotgun proteomics experiment, proteins are the most biologically meaningful output. The success of proteomics studies depends on the ability to accurately and efficiently identify proteins. Many methods have been proposed to facilitate the identification of proteins from the results of peptide identification. However, the relationship between protein identification and peptide identification has not been thoroughly explained before. In this talk, we provide a combinatorial perspective of the protein inference problem. We employ combinatorial mathematics to calculate the conditional protein probabilities under three assumptions, which lead to a lower bound, an upper bound and an empirical estimation of protein probabilities, respectively. The combinatorial perspective enables us to obtain a closed-form formulation for protein inference. Our method achieves competitive results with ProteinProphet in a more efficient manner in the experiment based on two datasets of standard protein mixtures and two datasets of real samples.

Considered cryptosystems such as Cardano square lattices are characterized by the high-speed encryption in use today Enhanced Programming computers. This is because the number of different variants rapidly increases with the size of a square. In this paper we have shown that, for the size of 20 × 20, the number of such grids exceeds the number of 1.6 × 2 60 Therefore, these systems have sufficient cryptographic resistance. Application of these systems in conjunction with substitution cipher can still more resist cryptographic attacks.

Opportunistic networks (Oppnets) are a kind of wireless networks that provide the opportunity to have social interaction and obtain data that can be used for message passing decision. The increase observed in the number of people with PDAs and other handset devices equipped with wireless technologies makes the forwarding paradigm and Oppnets scenarios more interesting and challenging. The main challenge in Oppnets is to take efficient routing decisions on securing the delivery of messages to the destination. Cooperation and trust between nodes in the network saves them from malicious attacks. The trust of a node is a basic value that symbolizes the magnitude of its social responsibility in the network, which include helping groups of nodes in message delivery, saving these nodes from malicious attacks, just to name a few. This paper focuses on blackhole attack against the PRoPHET routing protocol for Oppnets. A Trust-based Security Protocol (TSP) is proposed to secure Oppnets against blackhole attacks. Simulation results are provided to support the effectiveness of our proposed TSP approach, in the sense that considerable control is observed in the number of dropped packets, number of messages captured bythe malicious nodes (so-called malicious count) and overhead ratio.

This paper proposes a reduced-complexity downlink multi-channel assignment scheme when feedback links are capacity-limited. The system model treats the case when multiple access points are allocated to serve scheduled users in over-loaded (i.e. dense) pico/femtocell networks. It assumes that the deployed access points can be shared simultaneously and employ isotropic antenna arrays of arbitrary sizes. Moreover, they transmit their data on a common physical channel and can not coordinate their transmissions. On the other hand, each scheduled user can be served by single transmit channel from each active access point at a time, and it lacks coordination with concurrent active users. The scheme operates according to the occupancy of available transmit channels, wherein extensively occupied access points are avoided adaptively, while reducing the load of processing. The operation is linked to a target performance via controlling the observed aggregate interference from the projected set of serving points. Through the analysis, results for the scheduled user outage performance, and the average number of active access points are presented. Numerical and simulations studies clarify the gains of the proposed scheme for different operating conditions.

One of the most significant problems in organizational scholarship is to discern how social collectives govern, organize, and coordinate the actions of individuals to achieve collective outcomes. The collectives are usually interpreted as complex adaptive systems (CAS). The understanding of CAS is more likely to arise with the help of computer-based simulations. In this tutorial, using agent-based modeling approach, a complex adaptive social communication network model is introduced. The objective is to present the underlying dynamics of the system in a form of computer simulation that enables analyzing the impacts of various mechanisms on network topologies and emergent behaviors. The ultimate goal is to further our understanding of the dynamics in the system and facilitate developing informed policies for decision-makers.

The software Assurance Metrics and Tool Evaluation (SAMATE) project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has organized four Static Analysis Tool Expositions (SATE). SATE is designed to advance research in static analysis tools that find security-relevant defects in source code. Briefly, participating tool makers run their tools on a set of programs. Researchers led by NIST analyze the tool outputs. The results and experiences are reported at a workshop. These expositions have accumulated large amounts of data. This collection allowed for the development and validation of practical metrics in regard to static analysis tool effectiveness and independence. In this paper, we discuss the role of the data in determining which metrics can be derived. Specifically, we detail the three characteristics test data should exhibit and explain why the data we use express each combination of two out of these three properties.

Objective: Defect classification is an essential part of software development process models as a means of early identification of patterns in defect inflow profiles. Such classification, however, may often be a tedious task requiring analysis work in addition to what is necessary to resolve the issue. To increase classification efficiency, adapted schemes are needed. In this paper a light-weight defect classification scheme adapted for minimal process footprint - in terms of learning and classification effort - is proposed and initially evaluated. Method: A case study was conducted at Volvo Car Corporation to adapt the IEEE Std. 1044 for automotive embedded software. An initial evaluation was conducted by applying the adapted scheme to defects from an existing software product with industry professionals as subjects. Results: The results showed that the classification scheme was quick to learn and understand - required classification time stabilized around 5-10 minutes already after practicing on 3-5 defects. The results also showed that the patterns in the classified defects were interesting for the professionals, although in order to apply statistical methods more data was needed. Conclusions: We conclude that the adapted classification scheme captures what is currently tacit knowledge and has the potential of revealing patterns in the defects detected in different project phases. Furthermore, we were, in the initial evaluation, able to contribute with new information about the development process. As a result we are currently in the process of incorporating the classification scheme into the company's defect reporting system. © 2012 IEEE.
