In mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) networks, nodes tend to gather together rather than scattered uniformly across the network area. This paper considers the clustering of peer nodes and its performance impact in MP2P networks. The model for node clustering based on a heavy-tail distribution is first introduced and then a topology generation method that produces a clustered network is presented. Experiments based on ns-2 simulation with AODV routing protocol and IEEE 802.11 MAC reveal that the clustered layout significantly degrades the network performance and the main trouble comes from the MAC layer mechanisms. Node clustering results in as much as 77.6% lower packet delivery ratio compared to random node distribution. Moreover, it results in larger variation in packet delivery service, and thus has a serious impact on QoS, which is important in MP2P networks. © 2006 IEEE.

Workload characterization involves the understanding of the relationship between workload configurations and performance characteristics. To better assess the complexity of workload behavior, a model based approach is needed. Nevertheless, several configuration parameters and performance characteristics exhibit non-linear relationships that prohibit the development of an accurate application behavior model. In this paper, we propose a non-linear model based on an artificial neural network to explore such complex relationship. We achieved high accuracy and good predictability between configurations and performance characteristics when applying such a model to a 3-tier setup with response time restrictions. As shown by our work, a nonlinear model and neural networks can increase the understandings of complex multi-tiered workloads, which further provide useful insights for performance engineers to tune their workloads for improving performance. ©2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a helper thread prefetching scheme that is designed to work on loosely-coupled processors, such as in a standard chip multiprocessor (CMP) system or an intelligent memory system. Loosely-coupled processors have an advantage in that fine-grain resources, such as processor and L1cache resources, are not contended by the application and helper threads, hence preserving the speed of the application. However, interprocessor communication is expensive in such a system. We present techniques to alleviate this. Our approach exploits large loop-based code regions and is based on a new synchronization mechanism between the application and helper threads. This mechanism precisely controls how far ahead the execution of the helper thread can be with respect to the application thread. We found that this is important in ensuring prefetching timeliness and avoiding cache pollution. To demonstrate that prefetching in a loosely-coupled system can be done effectively, we evaluate our prefetching in a standard, unmodified CMP system, and in an intelligent memory system where a simple processor in memory executes the helper thread. Evaluating our scheme with nine memory-intensive applications with the memory processor in DRAM achieves an average speedup of 1.25. Moreover, our scheme works well in combination with a conventional processorside sequential L1prefetcher, resulting in an average speedup of 1.31. In a standard CMP, the scheme achieves an average speedup of 1.33. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a mobility management solution to support both applications who are mobility-aware and those who are not. Mobility management in heterogeneous network environments needs to address the double meaning of the IP address as an endpoint identifier and a location identifier. Application-layer mobility use a non-IP endpoint identifier (e.g. user@realm) while network-layer mobility uses a fixed home IP-address as endpoint identifier. The resolving of the endpoint identifier to a temporary unicast IP address as location identifier needs support from a mobility management system. This paper proposes a mobility support system that integrates the benefits of application-layer SIP mobility with network-layer MIP mobility. A cross-layer information system provides context for mobility adaptation. Context awareness enhances handover decisions, transport performance and media adoption. The network-layer mobility supports the application to locate the destination ondemand for the initial setup of the sessions. The paper includes an initial evaluation of the network-layer mobility part of the solution. © 2005 IEEE.

Data mining is finding hidden rules in given dataset using nontraditional methods. The objective is to discover useful or patterns from the given collection of data. This research investigates if the differences in accuracy of "time series forecasting" are related to the differences in one's cognitive style and subjective emotion. Two kinds of analyses were performed before applying data mining. Firstly, a statistical test was used to see if there was a positive correlation between a number of cognitive styles and subjective emotional states and the accuracy of time-series forecasting. This was not very revealing and the next step are to use a self-organizing neural network (SONN) to see if correlations between these variables could be discovered. The results showed that there were correlations but did not show whether the correlations were positive or negative. Finally data mining was applied to discover which cognitive styles and subjective emotions positively influence forecasting. It was found that subjects who have in analytic style and subjects who have a relaxed mode were more accurate in their judgments than those who do not these characteristics. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

H.264 is the new multimedia compression standard developed by VCEG and MPEG. In order to maximize the compression performance, H.264 adopts RDO mode decision techniques at the cost of very remarkable computational complexity. To reduce encoder complexity associated with the intra-prediction mode selection, in this paper, a fast intra prediction mode selection scheme is proposed. It is based on three improvement parts, including improvement of the intra prediction algorithm structure, fast selection between intra 4×4 block mode and intra 16×16 block mode, and the fast 4×4 luma block mode selection based on the luma similarity between reference pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme outperforms Pan's method, and compared with the test model JM8.6 provided by JVT, the proposed scheme reduces 83.10% coding time for intra frames and 50.94% coding time for all the frames while maintaining the PSNR and bit rate. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Some applicants, developers, and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software vendors have proposed reverse engineering as an approach for satisfying RTCA/DO-178B objectives for airborne software. RTCA/DO-178B, software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification, serves as the means of compliance for most airborne software in civil aircraft. DO-178B defines reverse engineering as "the method of extracting software design information from the source code" and provides guidance particular to reverse engineering, when it is used to upgrade a development baseline. For purposes of this paper, reverse engineering is an approach for creating software life cycle data that did not originally exist, cannot be found, is not adequate, or is not available to a developer in order to meet applicable DO-178B objectives. Reverse engineering is not just the generation of data-rather it is a process to assure that the data is correct, the software functionality is understood and well documented, and the software functions as intended and required by the system. Reverse engineering is not, as some software developers propose, just an effort to generate the software life cycle data without intent to build in quality and the resulting design assurance. This paper explores reverse engineering in airborne software projects, by explaining a definition for the certification domain, describing the motivation for its use, and documenting the certification concerns. Two actual cases of reverse engineering are also described to illustrate the certification concerns in real projects.

As Web resources and information are becoming numerous, many researchers have studied automated processing of the resources and information. In addition, semantic Web services make the Web services represented to be machine-interpretable through the semantic Web. Semantic Web services discovery systems, such as matchmaker, find proper semantic Web services for a client. However, it is mainly focused on semantic similarities between description instances and requests containing single input and output. In our design, annexed algorithm improves matching algorithm to arrange the result advertisements according to the client's conveniences for executing the Web services; less re-scheduling, less meaningless data. It also offers effective discovery services especially for the request with multiple inputs and outputs and in condition that there are no perfectly matched Web services or available Web services. Moreover, we implement the matching engine in URCSD (semantic Web services discovery for URC) for an intelligent agent, such as URC (ubiquitous robotic companion), through the proposed algorithm. Therefore, we expect the system provides effective discovery services for network based robotics and intelligent agents

This paper is concerned with the appearance-based face recognition from robot camera images with illumination and distance variations. The approaches used in this paper consist of eigenface, fisherface, and icaface, which are the most representative recognition techniques frequently used in conjunction with face recognition. These approaches are based on a popular unsupervised and supervised statistical technique that supports finding useful image representations, respectively. Thus we focus on the performance comparison from robot camera images with unwanted variations. The comprehensive experiments are completed for two face databases with illumination and distance variations. A comparative analysis demonstrates that ICA comes with improved classification rates when compared with other approaches such as eigenface and fisherface

In ubiquitous environment, various kinds of devices such as automated appliances and sensing devices exist for providing user with convenient services. However, in order to use such devices with felicity, people should have proper knowledge how to exploit and operate it through heterogeneous interfaces. Then, to enable human user to utilize the devices easily, the integrated interface, employing them with knowledge of them at ad-hoc manner, is necessarily needed. Therefore, to generate the adaptive interface for user in the environment, we propose an adaptive user controller exploiting the representation of devices through semantic descriptions. The devices in the environment are marked up with semantic description which can offer the logic describing information resources with semantics. The controller discovers the service devices, and it constructs the interfaces dynamically using knowledge for effective arrangement and user preference adaptation. We expect the system will dynamically provide user interfaces which make users control environment continuously without spatial restrictions. In addition, it can offer complex services with multiple devices using knowledge and defined rule through simple visualized interface
