This paper is concerned with the appearance-based face recognition from robot camera images with illumination and distance variations. The approaches used in this paper consist of eigenface, fisherface, and icaface, which are the most representative recognition techniques frequently used in conjunction with face recognition. These approaches are based on a popular unsupervised and supervised statistical technique that supports finding useful image representations, respectively. Thus we focus on the performance comparison from robot camera images with unwanted variations. The comprehensive experiments are completed for two face databases with illumination and distance variations. A comparative analysis demonstrates that ICA comes with improved classification rates when compared with other approaches such as eigenface and fisherface

In ubiquitous environment, various kinds of devices such as automated appliances and sensing devices exist for providing user with convenient services. However, in order to use such devices with felicity, people should have proper knowledge how to exploit and operate it through heterogeneous interfaces. Then, to enable human user to utilize the devices easily, the integrated interface, employing them with knowledge of them at ad-hoc manner, is necessarily needed. Therefore, to generate the adaptive interface for user in the environment, we propose an adaptive user controller exploiting the representation of devices through semantic descriptions. The devices in the environment are marked up with semantic description which can offer the logic describing information resources with semantics. The controller discovers the service devices, and it constructs the interfaces dynamically using knowledge for effective arrangement and user preference adaptation. We expect the system will dynamically provide user interfaces which make users control environment continuously without spatial restrictions. In addition, it can offer complex services with multiple devices using knowledge and defined rule through simple visualized interface

Workload characterization involves the understanding of the relationship between workload configurations and performance characteristics. To better assess the complexity of workload behavior, a model based approach is needed. Nevertheless, several configuration parameters and performance characteristics exhibit non-linear relationships that prohibit the development of an accurate application behavior model. In this paper, we propose a non-linear model based on an artificial neural network to explore such complex relationship. We achieved high accuracy and good predictability between configurations and performance characteristics when applying such a model to a 3-tier setup with response time restrictions. As shown by our work, a non-linear model and neural networks can increase the understandings of complex multi-tiered workloads, which further provide useful insights for performance engineers to tune their workloads for improving performance

In this paper, we propose a new term weighting scheme called term frequency-inverse corpus frequency (TF-ICF). It does not require term frequency information from other documents within the document collection and thus, it enables us to generate the document vectors of N streaming documents in linear time. In the context of a machine learning application, unsupervised document clustering, we evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed approach in comparison to five widely used term weighting schemes through extensive experimentation. Our results show that TF-ICF can produce document clusters that are of comparable quality as those generated by the widely recognized term weighting schemes and it is significantly faster than those methods

This is commonly thought that CASE tools reduce programming efforts and increase development productivity. However, no paper has provide quantitative data supporting the matter. This paper discusses productivity improvement through the use of an integrated CASE tool system named EAGLE (Effective Approach to Achieving High Level software Productivity), as shown by various data collected in Hitachi from the 1980s to the 2000s. We have evaluated productivity by using three metrics, 1) program generation rate using reusable program skeletons and components, 2) fault density at two test phase, and 3) learning curve for the education of inexperienced programmers. This paper describes the design and implementations of the first application service based on embedded Linux; Mobile Teller which uses WiBro network for data communications and CDMA network for voice communications. When a sender on a dual-mode terminal types texts, the texts are transmitted to a TTS server located in the Internet through WiBro network. Subsequently, the TTS server changes the texts into voices and transmits the voice data to the dual-mode terminal. At last the dual-mode terminal sends the voice to the receiver through the CDMA network. In case of noisy environment, Mobile Teller makes user to voice communication

In mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) networks, nodes tend to gather together rather than scattered uniformly across the network area. This paper considers the clustering of peer nodes and its performance impact in MP2P networks. The model for node clustering based on a heavy-tail distribution is first introduced and then a topology generation method that produces a clustered network is presented. Experiments based on ns-2 simulation with AODV routing protocol and IEEE 802.11 MAC reveal that the clustered layout significantly degrades the network performance and the main trouble comes from the MAC layer mechanisms. Node clustering results in as much as 77.6% lower packet delivery ratio compared to random node distribution. Moreover, it results in larger variation in packet delivery service, and thus has a serious impact on QoS, which is important in MP2P networks

We identify and describe the challenges of robot task description and discuss the shortcomings of current approaches in meeting these challenges. We then identify a set of goals to guide the design of a task description language for the service-oriented autonomous robot. These goals led to the creation of event-based task description language, a XML-based language for describing user tasks as patterns of sub-tasks and events. ETDL is human-readable yet flexible enough to describe most types of service patterns to human especially in home environment. This paper presents a helper thread prefetching scheme that is designed to work on loosely-coupled processors, such as in a standard chip multiprocessor (CMP) system or an intelligent memory system. Loosely-coupled processors have an advantage in that fine-grain resources, such as processor and L1 cache resources, are not contended by the application and helper threads, hence preserving the speed of the application. However, inter-processor communication is expensive in such a system. We present techniques to alleviate this. Our approach exploits large loop-based code regions and is based on a new synchronization mechanism between the application and helper threads. This mechanism precisely controls how far ahead the execution of the helper thread can be with respect to the application thread. We found that this is important in ensuring prefetching timeliness and avoiding cache pollution. To demonstrate that prefetching in a loosely-coupled system can be done effectively, we evaluate our prefetching in a standard, unmodified CMP system, and in an intelligent memory system where a simple processor in memory executes the helper thread. Evaluating our scheme with nine memory-intensive applications with the memory processor in DRAM achieves an average speedup of 1.25. Moreover, our scheme works well in combination with a conventional processor-side sequential L1 prefetcher, resulting in an average speedup of 1.31. In a standard CMP, the scheme achieves an average speedup of 1.33.
