A supervised feature selection method selects an appropriate but concise set of features to differentiate classes, which is highly expensive for large-scale datasets. Therefore, feature selection should aim at both minimizing the number of selected features and maximizing the accuracy of classification, or any other task. However, this crucial task is computationally highly demanding on many real-world datasets and requires a very efficient algorithm to reach a set of optimal features with a limited number of fitness evaluations. For this purpose, we have proposed the binary multi-objective coordinate search (MOCS) algorithm to solve large-scale feature selection problems. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed algorithm in this paper is the first multi-objective coordinate search algorithm. In this method, we generate new individuals by flipping a variable of the candidate solutions on the Pareto front. This enables us to investigate the effectiveness of each feature in the corresponding subset. In fact, this strategy can play the role of crossover and mutation operators to generate distinct subsets of features. The reported results indicate the significant superiority of our method over NSGA-II, on five real-world large-scale datasets, particularly when the computing budget is limited. Moreover, this simple hyper-parameter-free algorithm can solve feature selection much faster and more efficiently than NSGA-II. © 2023 IEEE.

A hybrid Fuzzy proportional-integral-derivative (Fuzzy-PID)-based control algorithm is introduced for a non-dissipative (active) charge equalization scheme consisting of a supercapacitor and two-stage bidirectional DC-DC converter. The proposed control algorithm intelligently modulates the balancing parameters while realizing the cell-to-pack-to-cell (C2P2C) balancing of a lithium-ion battery pack. The charge imbalance and charging/discharging profile are considered by the Fuzzy-logic algorithm to determine the balancing current that not only enhances the balancing speed but also ensures the operation under a safe operating region and a longer battery life. Accurate determination of cell state of charge (SOC) is highly challenging, here the proposed Fuzzy-based control algorithm eliminates the necessity of accurate SOC determination that eventually reduces the computational cost and necessity of highly precise sensors. The proposed topology requires fewer active components due to the utilization of C2P2C balancing, resulting in a simple control algorithm and lower implementation cost. The supercapacitor is used as an energy buffer to enhance the robustness and life of the balancing circuitry. Simulation studies are conducted in MATLAB-Simscape to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Further, a comparative study with the state-of-the-art is performed to demonstrate the superiority of the scheme. © 2022 IEEE.

Deep learning models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which could generate adversarial perturbation to make deep learning classifiers fail in classification tasks. In this paper, we reviewed a variety of defensive methods against adversarial attacks and proposed our solution. We present a modification of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architecture to train a classifier for the purpose of defending against adversarial attacks. We trained multiple deep learning classifiers with different generator formulations to compare and evaluate their robustness against adversarial attacks. We show how the GAN architecture could contribute to the adversarial machine learning problem and how the capacity of the generator affects the training performance. Our results show that GAN architectures can improve the adversarial robustness of a deep learning classifier with more efficiency training time. The CIFAR 10 classifier accuracy remains around 45% under 8/255 L infinity norm adversarial distortion. © 2023 for this paper by its authors. The use of electric vehicles (EV) has exponentially grown within the past couple of years and it is expected to increase by 2050 causing a drastic increase in residential demand. Due to such an increase in demand, many existing distribution transformers servicing these residential homes may need either replacement or upgrade in their sizes to account for the home charging of these EVs. Choosing the correct economic transformer’s size helps electric utilities to benefit from such a significant capital investment. In this paper, a Smart Transformer Sizing Tool (STST) was developed to provide the correct economic size of transformers that ensure no overload as well as maintain the voltage quality. The results demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed tool are presented and conclusions are drawn.

The coupling of the legacy power infrastructure with complex computer networks and the integration of communication devices has led to the problem of cyberattacks, which in turn may induce partial/full blackouts. In this regard, an approach based on a Decision Tree for the detection and mitigation of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks is proposed in this paper. Based on the patterns and effects observed during DoS attacks on the Synchrophasor data flowing from the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) to the Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC), various supervised machine learning models are employed, which classify healthy and attack data and detect DoS attacks. Thereafter, a recurrent deep learning network employing Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) architecture is utilized to reconstruct the lost data, which in turn is helpful in mitigating the impacts of a DoS attack. The suggested algorithms are validated using a real-world scenario of a communication dataflow between multiple PMUs placed at different buses of a power transmission network and a PDC present at a control center, representing a wide-area network, and are incorporated using Real Time Digital Simulator and openPDC. By comparing various metrics of ML classification, the results indicate that the decision tree based model gives better accuracy along with the least detection time compared to other machine learning-based models. The suggested GRU-based mitigation algorithm can reconstruct the DoS-impacted lost data from the available pre-attack phasors. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing prevalence of embedded systems in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) has amplified the necessity for effective and adaptable software development practices. The challenges encountered in designing and developing these systems stem from the requirement to efficiently integrate advanced computational paradigms like machine learning and fog computing. Their inherent complexity and rigidity often limit the systems’ adaptability to evolving requirements and complicate the effective management of feature dependencies, versioning, customization, and configuration in distributed environments. To address these challenges, we propose the FeaMod framework, integrating feature-based modularity with adaptive feature modeling for enhanced efficiency in embedded software design. Using the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) model, FeaMod employs automated feature extraction through advanced static code analysis, facilitating the identification of computational features and requirements from existing codebases. These features are encapsulated in an adaptive feature model (AFM) that encourages code reuse and allows for dynamic configuration and system integration. By introducing a set of rules governing feature relationships, our approach ensures the adaptive nature of the model, enhancing its flexibility in response to changing system requirements, user preferences, and varying environmental conditions.

Remote keyless entry (RKE) systems have become a standard feature in modern vehicles, offering the convenience of wireless control. However, this convenience is accompanied by significant security vulnerabilities, particularly susceptibility to jamming attacks. These attacks disrupt communication between the key fob and the vehicle, potentially leading to unauthorized access and vehicle theft. This study investigates the effectiveness of adaptive power control as a countermeasure to jamming attacks on RKE systems and examines the influence of jammer placement on data transmission success rates. We conducted experiments using a custom-built jammer, transmitter, and receiver to simulate real-world scenarios. Our findings demonstrate that jammer proximity significantly affects transmission success, and while increasing key fob power can initially mitigate jamming, its effectiveness diminishes beyond a certain threshold. © 2024 IEEE.

Locks are essential in multi-threaded applications as they provide a solution to synchronization of shared resources. However, improper management of locks and threads can lead to contention and surface as run-time performance degradation in the application. Nowadays, performance engineers use legacy tools and their experience to determine causes of lock contention but it takes significant expertise to use these tools. In this paper, a data clustering approach is presented to help identify lock contention faults. The classifier is trained leveraging run-time performance data acquired from a catalog of lock contention Java anti-patterns and code smells. The K-means unsupervised classifier algorithm was used to create the classification model and the results show that lock contentions can be classified into three clusters that can be identified into those caused by a) threads spending too much time inside the critical section, b) threads blocked because of high frequency access requests, and c) threads with a low contention. This classifier is intended to be used to help tailor recommendations to the developer based on the lock contention anti-patterns and type of lock contention. © 2023 IEEE.

Faults in a transmission line (TL) are the most common faults faced by almost every power station. Suppose these faults are not detected in time. In that case, they can result in multiple losses, such as a loss in an estimated power generation w.r.t predicted time and financial losses. In order to investigate the fault, the systematic approach of an engineer would be first to detect whether there is a fault or not. If a fault is detected in the transmission line, it should be classified as soon as possible. The following classifications would help the maintenance team identify the fault type: line fault, line-to-line fault, double line fault, triple line fault, single-line-to-ground fault, double line-to-ground fault, three-phase fault, and no fault. This paper proposes that the ensemble method, using the Machine Learning (ML) technique, will help the engineers detect and classify the faults in the transmission line. The investigation also trained and tested multiple ML classifiers to inform better recommendations. The shared research will help the user find the best possible ML results for predicting faults in the transmission line. Hence early and accurate fault detection will enhance safety and reliability and reduce interruption and downtime.

This paper considers a multi-group multicasting scenario facilitated by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We propose a fast and scalable algorithm for the joint design of the base station (BS) multicast beamforming and the RIS passive beamforming to minimize the transmit power subject to the quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. By exploring the structure of the joint optimization problem, we show that this QoS problem can be broken into a BS multicast QoS subproblem and an RIS max-min-fair (MMF) multicast subproblem, which are solved alternatingly. In our proposed algorithm, we utilize the optimal multicast beamforming structure to obtain the BS beamformers efficiently. Furthermore, we reformulate the challenging RIS multicast subproblem and employ a first-order projected sub gradient algorithm (PSA) to solve it, which yields closed-form updates. Simulation results show the efficacy of our proposed algorithm in performance and computational cost compared to other alternative methods.
