In electric power transmission and distribution systems, the use of overhead lines instead of underground cables is preferred by power utilities mainly due to the lower construction cost and the easier maintenance access. On the other hand the equipment used in overhead lines is stressed by several factors, such as weather conditions, lightning, vegetation fires, etc. In particular, vegetation fires under the overhead transmission lines could have catastrophic results for the installed equipment and can cause long-lasting electricity interruptions. In this study, condition assessment results are presented for eighteen 150 kV composite insulators exposed to a forest fire event, occurred in the August 2021, in the island of Rhodes, Greece. The evaluation of the fire effects on composite insulators was performed by employing several macroscopic and microscopic diagnostic techniques including visual inspection, hydrophobicity classification, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy analysis. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

The purpose of this paper is to present a new GAN-ID algorithm to gener-ate interior scene intelligently based on Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). Although great progress has been made when GAN algorithm applied in smart homes and smart cities, the issue of the trade-off between the accuracy and the efficiency in interior scene has been overlooked. A number of experiments were performed to check the performance and it is indicated that the results of the proposed GAN-ID has great advantages in model sample generation than other common methods when generating interior scene intelligently, which is similar to state-of-the-art. It is meaningful when it can be applied in smart cities and smart homes filed based on AIoT in the future. © 2024, J. Network Intell. All rights reserved.

As more and more service providers encapsulate and publish their data and services on the internet in the form of Web APIs, the number of Web APIs is ever-increasing. For this reason, Web API recommendation is gaining momentum and has achieved high performance in accuracy. However, few studies paid attention to function recommendation. As an indispensable entity in the mashup-API ecosystem, function is not only the in-facto basis of API taxonomy, but also determines the compatibility and the internal construction pattern of mashup composition. Considering that users adopt multiple function invocations during a development cycle and the number of functions is also increasing, we propose the complementary function recommendation(CFR), a function-to-function problem. To solve the CFR, we regard each mashup as a transaction set for frequent pattern mining and propose an association rule-based complementary function recommendation(ARCFR) system, which provides function recommendation and corresponding probability explanation. Our experiments show that ARCFR can recommend complementary function effectively, and we give two applicable scenarios to demonstrate the practical value of our method in more aspects. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Cognitive radio (CR) is considered a primary technology for spectrum usage efficiency and dynamic spectrum management. Spectrum sensing is an essential cognitive radio cycle function. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) technology has emerged as a promising new enabler of 6G wireless communication, with the ability to control signal propagation and increase signal coverage and spectrum management. This paper investigates how integrating RISs with CR can improve spectral efficiency. First, we optimize the RIS parameters by identifying the optimal transmit powers and number of RIS antennas. Then, we compare the novel RIS technology with the traditional decode-and-forward (DF) relaying technology. Next, we investigate how adopting RIS can enhance spectral efficiency. Finally, we demonstrate how integrating the novel technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces with CR can significantly increase spectrum detection, the most crucial step in the cognitive radio process. Simulation studies indicate that RIS is more energy-efficient than SISO and DF-relay communications in various setups. Moreover, by boosting spectrum sensing capability in CR situations, RISs can significantly enhance the efficiency of frequency spectrum usage. © 2023 IEEE.

In order to solve the impact of image degradation on object detection, an object detection method based on light field super-resolution(LFSR) is proposed. This method takes LFSR as an image enhancement step to provide high-quality images for object detection without using expensive imaging equipment. To evaluate this method, three types of objects: person, bicycle, and car, are chosen and the results are compared from 5 parts: detected object quantity, mean confidence score, detection results in different scenes, error detection, and detection results from different images sizes and detection speed. Experimental results based on the common object in context(COCO) dataset show that the method incorporated LFSR improves performance of object detection models.

The proliferation of behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DER) within the electrical distribution network presents significant supply and demand flexibilities, but also introduces operational challenges such as voltage spikes and reverse power flows. In response, this paper proposes a network-aware dynamic pricing framework tailored for energy-sharing coalitions that aggregate small, but ubiquitous, BTM DER downstream of a distribution system operator’s (DSO) revenue meter that adopts a generic net energy metering (NEM) tariff. By formulating a Stackelberg game between the energy-sharing market leader and its prosumers, we show that the dynamic pricing policy induces the prosumers toward a network-safe operation and decentrally maximizes the energysharing social welfare. The dynamic pricing mechanism involves a combination of a locational ex-ante dynamic price and an ex-post allocation, both of which are functions of the energy sharing’s BTM DER. The ex-post allocation is proportionate to the price differential between the DSO NEM price and the energy-sharing locational price. Simulation results using real DER data and the IEEE 13-bus test systems illustrate the dynamic nature of network-aware pricing at each bus, and its impact on voltage.

As renewable penetrations increase in the United States, maintaining the stability and reliability of low-inertia power grids by providing sufficient frequency control capabilities becomes a challenge. Advanced pumped storage hydropower (A-PSH) technologies will be expected to play an essential role in the future grid to provide energy and ancillary services. This paper studies the impact of using quaternary pumped storage hydropower (Q-PSH) as a newly proposed A-PSH technology to provide primary frequency response. To quantify the impact of Q-PSH on the frequency response of the U.S. Western Interconnection, a user-defined dynamic model of Q-PSH is developed in the GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) software and is implemented in a set of detailed U.S. Western Electricity Coordinating Council planning cases, in which renewable penetration levels are 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. Simulation results show that Q-PSH can help improve the frequency nadir and the settling frequency compared to conventional PSH. © 2022 IEEE.

Accurate traffic flow forecasting is crucial for managing and planning urban transportation systems. Despite the widespread use of sequence modelling models like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) for this purpose, the potential of Transformer models remains underexplored. This is particularly true for the simplest form of a single block encoder-decoder Transformer model, which can be finely tuned through optimised hyperparameters. This paper examines the performance of a singular horizon-step forecasting method for multi-step traffic flow forecasting using a proposed Single Block Encoder-Decoder Transformer model optimised with a Grid Search algorithm. Results demonstrate that this model can enhance forecasting accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art LSTM model typically used for multi-step forecasting. The model effectively captures long-range temporal dependencies within a single road traffic flow dataset. It was tested on hourly traffic flow data to forecast the next 24 hours for the I5-North freeway in California, sourced from the Caltrans Performance Measurement system. The optimal configuration included an embedding dimension of 32, a feed-forward dimension of 128, and 8 attention heads. Results show a significant improvement, with a 4.7% reduction in Root Mean Squared Error compared to an LSTM model with two hidden layers of 100 neurons each, showcasing the potential of Single Block Encoder-Decoder Transformer models for real-world traffic prediction applications. © 2024 IEEE.

The existing group public key encryption with equality test schemes could only support one-to-one data sharing and are not suitable for cloud-assisted autonomous transportation systems, which demand one-to-many data sharing. To tackle this problem efficiently, in this article, we put forward the group-attribute-based encryption with equality test (G-ABEET) scheme. The presented G-ABEET allows sensors equipped in vehicles to encrypt traffic data with an expressive access policy before sharing it. Only users with attributes required by the access policy ought to access the shared ciphertexts, thus achieving selective one-to-many data sharing. Meanwhile, the authorized cloud server could provide group users with equality tests over the ciphertexts, realizing ciphertext search ability. Furthermore, with the group mechanism, the G-ABEET scheme could resist offline message recovery attacks. Besides, in the standard model, we give rigorous security proof of the G-ABEET construction. The feasibility and efficiency of G-ABEET are demonstrated by experimental simulations. © 2005-2012 IEEE.
