A model checking approach for solving epistemic riddles

This paper aims to model and solve the Sum and Product Riddle in public announcement logic. A dynamic epistemic model is proposed, that is the linear temporal combination of the epistemic model of environment and the epistemic models after each announcement, such that the authors' model checking technique for temporal epistemic logic can be extended to support the modeling and verification of public announcement logic. This model checking method not only can help to find all solutions, but also verify related temporal epistemic properties. Such characteristic is not fully supported by the current version of MCK, MCMAS and DEMO. The authors implemented the proposed method in the symbolic model checker MCTK via OBDD and verified the sum and product riddle. The experimental results show that the proposed method is correct and efficient.

A Gabor wavelet based palmprint recognition algorithm is introduced in this paper. With high recognition rate and low computational complexity, the algorithm is suitable for portable platform. TI TMS320VC5509A is a high performance digital signal processor (DSP) provided by Texas Instruments Corporation. By using the 5509A chip as the core processor, working with AVR microcontroller, CPLD device and CMOS image sensor, the hardware platform is constructed. By porting the recognition algorithm to the hardware platform, a portable palmprint recognition system is proposed in this paper. Experimental results on PolyU palmprint database and actual captured palmprint image database have demonstrated that, the implemented recognition system can indicate palmprints effectively with little computation time and chip resources required. ©2010 IEEE.

A low complexity receiver named MIMO-ADIC, which is based on an adaptive MUD mixed with interference cancellation (ADIC MUD), is presented and analyzed in the MIMO environment. This proposed adaptive MIMO receiver yields BER results equivalent to those of the MMSE-SIC receiver in perfect knowledge of channel gains as well as improved BER robustness when the channel impulse responses are not perfectly estimated. Its advantage of not employing matrix inversion is particularly obvious in the complexity study. Indeed, compared with most recent reduced complexity versions of MMSE-SIC detection of the V-BLAST system, MIMO-ADIC is up to 2.5 times less complex in term s of number of used antennas in MIMO systems.

This paper presents KUCAS (Known User Continuous Authentication system), a work-in-progress security system, that has a continuous authentication mechanism of users/consumers. The KUCAS system makes use of environmental context information, users behavior analysis, the behavior theories of Skinner and the Mathematical Confidence of Dempster-Shafer Evidences Theory, that establishes trust levels to authenticate the user by his behavior analysis, during an application software, in a specific domain of the computer networks, in a period of time. The dynamics of enclosed management in this system compares the current behavior with the user's previous behaviors description and with the trust restrictions. In case of indications of changes in the user's behavior, the system provides the behavior analysis of the user using database restrictions information. If there are uncertainties and divergences, mechanisms of security and alert signals are triggered.

Recently in many industrial fields the exploitation of vision systems for quality control had a considerable increase, which is mainly due to the technological progress experienced by such systems, that, with respect to the past, made their performance more appealing and more reliable while the associated costs are decreased. The advantages of these kind of systems in terms of savings in human resources and improved quality monitoring have become far more evident, by encouraging their adoption in a wide variety of production cycles. The present paper deals with the elaboration and information extraction from images, that represent portions of the surface of flat steel products, and describes an algorithm for defect detection and classification. The overall classification procedure is composed of a preliminary part that is mostly related to image processing and analysis, which aims at pointing out the defect (independently on the class it belongs to), as well as to the extraction of relevant features of the detected defect; the second part exploits a fuzzy inference system in order to analyze the type of defect and solves a classification problem that presently can be addressed only with the support of a human operator. Fuzzy inference systems are suitable to this application because they are able to mimic and reproduce the human reasoning.

Software as a Service (SaaS) 1.0 signifcantly lowers the infrastructure and maintenance cost and increases the accessibility of the software by hosting software via the web. Compared with SaaS 1.0, SaaS 2.0 is more flexible since it leverages software tools from both server and client sides with closer interaction between them. The SaaS 2.0 paradigm provides new opportunities and challenges for EDA. In this paper, we take Boolean matching, one of the core sub algorithms in logic synthesis for field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), as a case study. We investigate the advantages and challenges of implementing a scalable EDA algorithm under SaaS 2.0 paradigm from a technical perspective. We propose SaaS-BM, a new Boolean matching algorithm customized to take full advantage of the cloud while addressing concerns such as security and the internet bandwidth limit. Extensive experiments are performed under a networked environment with concurrent accesses. Integrated into a post-mapping re-synthesis algorithm minimizing area, the proposed SaaS-BM is 863X times faster than state-of-the-art SAT-based Boolean matching with 0.5% area overhead. Compared with a recent Bloom Filter-based Boolean matching algorithm, our proposed SaaS-BM is 53X times faster on large circuits with no area overhead.

Resisting spam in tagging system is very challenging. This paper presents DSpam, a novel spam-resistant tagging system which can significantly diminish spam in tag search results with users' reliabilities. DSpam client groups other users into unfamiliar users and interacted users according to the fact whether the client has interacted with such users. For an unfamiliar user, the client computes his reliability by tagging behavior-based mechanism which reflects correlation of annotations between them. For an interacted user, the reliability includes two parts: feedback-based reliability, which indicates direct interactions between that user and the client, and recommendation reliability, which indicates the evaluation about that user from the client's friends. The client ranks search result with the average reliabilities of himself with respect to annotators of each result. Experimental results show DSpam can effectively resist tag spam and work better than existing tag search schemes.

Solid-state disks (SSDs) with high I/O performance are increasingly becoming popular. To extend the life time of flash memory, one can apply wear-leveling strategies to manage data blocks. However, wear-leveling strategies certainly inevitably degrade write performance. In addition to low write performance, wear-leveling strategies make one block unwritable when one bit of this block is invalid. Although data reconstruction techniques have been widely employed in disk arrays, the reconstruction techniques has not been studied in the context of solid-state disks. In this paper, we present a new fine-grained data-reconstruction algorithm for solid-state disks. The algorithm aims to provide a simple yet efficient wear-leveling strategy that improves both I/O performance and reliability of solid-state disks. Simulation experiments show that all data blocks have very similar in terms of erasure times. The number of extra erasures incurred by our algorithm is very marginal.

Robust scheduling is an effective way to solve job-shop scheduling problem (JSP) under a dynamic and stochastic environment with uncertainties, which may lead to numerous schedule disruptions. Maintaining the optimization obtained, the robust schedule is more stable in execution. The vast majority of the researches on robust scheduling concentrate on the development of the robustness and stabilization with an optimization target that minimizes makespan. However, other optimization targets are needed in reality, and in this paper, we introduce another optimization target that maximizes the payload of the machine, which can reflect the capacity of machine. This work applies a two-step way to achieve a robust schedule. A baseline schedule in the deterministic environment is generated first, which pursues standard optimization criterions, and then the temporal buffers are inserted into the baseline schedule which make the schedule absorb some level of unexpected disruption without rescheduling. According to the payload of each machine which should be close to the maximum at any time in execution, we can get each size of the temporal buffers inserted into the different operations. An extensive experiment is used to show the relative performance of the proposed robust schedule. It is shown that the schedule is robust and stable under the stochastic disturbance coupling with minimal makespan tardiness and symmetry payload. ©2010 IEEE.
