Although biometrics technology has progressed substantially, its performance is still to be improved for real applications. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of personal identification, when only single sample is registered as template, by integrating multiple hand-based biometrics. To make fusion much easier, the same feature, so called fusion code, and decision level fusion strategy are used. Two fusion cases, face & palmprint and FKP & palmprint were taken as examples to verify the effectiveness. Experimental results show that much better performance than single modal biometrics has been achieved.

In this paper, we propose a novel feature representation based on color-based Local Binary Pattern (LBP) texture analysis for face recognition (FR). The proposed method exploits both color and texture discriminative features of a face image for FR purpose. We evaluate the proposed feature using three public face databases: CMU-PIE, Color FERET, and XM2VTSDB. Experimental results show that the results of the proposed feature impressively better than the results of grayscale LBP and color features. In particular, it is shown that the proposed feature is highly robust against severe variations in illumination and spatial resolution.

Recently Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm has been applied to a range of problems in engineering with promising results. However, in most of the literature the standard PBIL with fixed learning rate has been used. It has been shown that when applied to dynamic environment as the one encountered in power systems, adaptive learning rate is more appropriate to use. In this paper, Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm with adaptive learning rate is used to tune the parameters of a power system controller for damping power oscillations in a multi-machine power system. The optimization of controller's parameters has been performed over pre-specified range of system operating conditions. Robustness Evaluation of the proposed controller based on eigenvalue analysis and time domain simulation shows that the proposed controller is more robust than the conventional controller over the range of operating conditions considered.

This paper describes the evolution of a software testing effort during a critical period for the flagship Mars Science laboratory rover project at the Jet Propulsion laboratory. Formal specification for post-run analysis of log files, using a domain-specific language, LogScope, replaced scripted real-time analysis. Log analysis addresses the key problems of on-the-fly approaches and cleanly separates specification and execution. Mining the test repository suggested the inadequacy of the scripted approach, and encouraged a partly engineer-driven development. LogScope development should hold insights for others facing the tight deadlines and reactionary nature of testing for critical projects. LogScope received a JPL Mariner Award for "improving productivity and quality of the MSL Flight Software" and has been discussed as an approach for other flight missions. We note LogScope features that most contributed to ease of adoption and effectiveness. LogScope is general and can be applied to any software producing logs.

Face detection is becoming popular in surveillance applications; however, the need of enormous size face/non-face dataset, large number of features, and long training time are persistent problems. This paper claims that only a subset of the total number of features conserves the major power to detect faces; hence, this subset is capable to detect faces with high detection rate. The proposed detector fuses the results of two classifiers where one is trained with only 40 Haar-like features and the other is trained with only 50 LBP Histogram features. A pre-processing stage of skin-tone detection is applied to reduce the false positive rate. The detector is examined on real-life low-resolution surveillance sequence. Conducted experiments show that the proposed detector can achieve a high detection rate and a low false positive rate. Also, it outperforms Lienhart detector and tolerates wide range of illumination and blurring changes.

Insulating vegetable oils are fire-resistant and environment-friendly liquid dielectrics. This paper presents a type of nano-modified insulating vegetable oil. The nano-modified insulating vegetable oil was prepared by homogeneous precipitation deposition of ferroferric oxide nano-particles. It was characterized by a laser nano-particle size analyzer. Its electric properties, including AC breakdown voltage, lightning impulse breakdown voltage, volume resistivity, relative permittivity, and dissipation factor were measured. Experiment results show that the ferroferric oxide nano-pariticles with proper content in oil improves the breakdown voltages, volume resistivity, and lightning impulse electrical strength of the insulating vegetable oil significantly.

The benefits of using mobile sink to prolong sensor network lifetime have been well recognized. However, few provably theoretical results remain are developed due to the complexity caused by time-dependent network topology. In this work, we investigate the optimum routing strategy for the static sensor network. We further propose a number of motion stratifies for the mobile sink(s) to gather real time data from static sensor network, with the objective to maximize the network lifetime. Specially, we consider a more realistic model where the moving speed and path for mobile sinks are constrained. Our extensive experiments show that our scheme can significantly prolong entire network lifetime and reduce delivery delay.

This paper discusses the difficulties related to interharmonic measurement and characterization. A simple FFT-based signal processing tool is proposed to analyze time-varying interharmonics. This tool is generally effective in determining interharmonic frequencies and magnitudes for many signaling applications, overcoming some of the issues related to interharmonic measurement. This paper gives a summary of the requirements and calculating methods for the maximum insulated conductor temperatures (usually referred to as hottest-spot temperature or hot spot temperature) in oil-immersed transformers. laboratory experiments were performed on a 5 kV, 100 kVA transformer using thermocouples during the short circuit heat run tests, and the measurements from the tests are employed to compare some of the methods mentioned in the paper.
