DRAM row buffer conflicts can increase memory access latency significantly. This paper presents a new pageallocation-based optimization that works seamlessly together with some existing hardware and software optimizations to eliminate significantly more row buffer conflicts. Validation in simulation using a set of selected scientific and engineering benchmarks against a few representative memory controller optimizations shows that our method can reduce row buffer miss rates by up to 76% (with an average of 37.4%). This reduction in row buffer miss rates will be translated into performance speedups by up to 15% (with an average of 5%).

We report on the phenomena of the periodic spontaneous collapse and revival in the dynamics of an atomic beam interacting with a single-mode and coherent-state light field. Conventional collapse and revival by Eberly et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 44(1980)1323 ] are presented in the case of the evolution with time of the population inversion. Here, we study the evolution with coupling strength of population inversion. We define the collapse and revival coupling strengths as characteristic parameters to describe the above collapse and revival. Furthermore, we present the analytic formulas for the population inversion, the collapse and revival coupling strengths.

Non-metallic particles, especially alumina, are the main inclusions in aluminum and its alloys. Numerical simulation and the corresponding experiments were carried out to study the motion behavior of alumina particles in commercial pure aluminum under high frequency magnetic field. At the meantime, multi-pipe experiment was also done to discuss the prospect of continuous elimination of non-metallic particles under high frequency magnetic field. It is shown that: 1) results of numerical simulation are in good agreement with the experimental results, which certificates the rationality of the simulation model; 2) when the intensity of high frequency magnetic field is 0.06 T, the 30 μm alumina particles in melt inner could migrate to the edge and be removed within 2 s; 3) multi-pipe elimination of alumina particles under high frequency magnetic field is also effective and has a good prospect in industrial application.

We present the results of a data mining research on the use of GPS positions and speed of travel of vehicles in urban areas to determine optimal travel routes for emergency vehicles. A new approach using predictive programming is presented. The approach focuses on using data mining of existing data as the key factor in the application logic where various decisions are to be made. Moving horizon estimation for discrete-time nonlinear systems is addressed by using fast optimization algorithms for which stability results under general conditions are ensured. The solution of the on-line moving horizon estimation problem is obtained by using the sampling time to solve a reference problem with model-predicted measurements while waiting for the next measurement. In order to correct the resulting solution, a quick nonlinear programming sensitivity calculation is accomplished as soon as the new measurement becomes available. The stability properties of such moving horizon estimation algorithm is proved under general conditions, which make the overall approach suitable for real settings with strong nonlinearities.

Satisfiability modulo theories (SMT) play a key role in verification applications. A crucial SMT problem is to combine separate theory solvers for the union of theories. In previous work, the simplex method is used to determine the solvability of constraint systems and the equalities implied by constraint systems are detected by a multitude of applications of the dual simplex method. We present an effective simplex tableau-based method to identify all implicit equalities such that the simplex method is harnessed to an irreducible minimum. Experimental results show that the method is feasible and effective.

A modeling and simulation tool called SimRC is described in this paper. It is dedicated to improve the efficiency of reconfigurable computing development. In SimRC, a new architecture description language is designed for architecture modeling, and the target architecture simulator is generated according to that model with our code generation approach. In this way, SimRC achieves the general purpose in a certain scope. The results of the preliminary experiments show that not only SimRC is able to model various architectures, but also it achieves the high simulation efficiency.
