The Oriented architecture of macromolecules plays a critical role in many aspects of Nanobiotechnology such as in the development of biosensors. To this regard, S-layers which constitute the outermost cell envelope component of many prokaryotic organisms, represent unique self assembled systems with the capability to rearrange into monomolecular and oriented arrays. These properties can be exploited to promote their crystallization on surfaces (e.g. silicone) which is pivotal for the subsequent immobilization of macromolecules and development of new biosensors. In this work the crystallization of bacterial S-layers obtained from Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus sphaericus CCM2177 on silicone, mica and quartz crystal surfaces were investigated. The SDS page results of S-layers isolated from the above mentioned bacteria put in evidence that their molecular weight (MW) was around 120 KDa and, as reported in the literature, slightly higher for those extracted by Bacillus thuringiensis. In addition, results showed that S-layers isolated from Bacillus thuringiensis form large crystalline domains on mica after 5 min whereas those extracted from Bacillus sphaericus CCM 2177 form a compact monolayer on silicone after 2 h. Results in this work put in evidence the possibility to use these substrates for the fabrication of sensitive biosensors.

A new geometric computing theory was proposed. On the definition level of geometric elements, using the Cartesian coordinates ideology as reference, 2D and 3D ″geometric algebra elements″ (or ″geometric elements″ for short, which could construct an upper-level element in the solving sequence) were constructed by geometry algebraization methods. On the processing level of geometries, geometric problems were solved with geometry methods, by which a geometric element solving sequence could be constructed. Directional property was introduced into geometries in this theory and geometries were represented in a unified format. They help to simplify the processing of finding the geometric element solving sequence for a geometry problem. The paper also tried to theoretically find out an integrated solution for geometry ambiguity issues, and established a unified, standardized geometry computing architecture. Using the multiple-parameter Monte Carlo method, the effectiveness of the dual threshold voltage technique (DTV) in low power domino logic design is analyzed. Simulation results indicate that under significant temperature and process fluctuations, DTV is still highly effective in reducing the total leakage and active power consumption for domino gates with speed loss. Also, regarding power and delay characteristics, different structure domino gates with DTV have different robustness against temperature and process fluctuation.

The issue of power quality in the distribution system is always in sense of the concern. With the high penetration of distributed generation (DG) currently, it tends to be more complicated. This paper presents a new approach to evaluate impacts of the DG on power quality of the distribution network. In the process an objective function will be modeled, which will be solved by the optimization toolbox, in order to calculate the result for the evaluating grade. Furthermore, the results of the overall evaluation will be given via the eigenvalue weighted method. The power quality ranking of each feeder with the distributed generators in the distribution network will be apparent with the given weight of influence caused by DGs divided in forms of energy resource.

The gold standard for the localization of epileptic activities in the cerebral cortex is intracranial electrocorticography (ECoG) electrodes placed directly on the brain surface. However, it has limitations in being able to localize deep brain epileptic sources. As a means to improve the localization of epileptic activities from these subdural electrical recordings, we developed a simple source monitoring system to detect and localize these deep sources. The method is based on an independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm known as joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrices (JADE). This method was tested on patients with neocortical epileptic foci focusing on the interictal spikes from ECoG signals. The proposed method localizes the interictal epileptic discharges to both superficial as well as deep regions of the human neocortex and has the potential to improve the localization and surgical outcomes of patients with medically refractory epilepsy undergoing surgical resections.

Oil-impregnated paper is a major type of insulation in oil-filled power transformers. In converter transformers, windings connected with converter valves have to withstand AC and DC combined voltages. This paper presented the experimental research on electrical breakdown properties of oilpaper insulation under AC-DC combined voltages. Electrical breakdown strength of oil-paper insulation specimens was measured through short-time tests under AC, DC, and AC-DC combined voltages. The combined voltages consisted of two different ratios of the AC to DC voltages. Through the constant-stress tests, the times-to-breakdown of oil-paper specimens were measured. Weibull parameters of the times-to-breakdown of specimens were estimated and the inverse power and exponential failure models of the specimens were presented.
