In multicore environment, using multiple threads is a common useful approach to improve application performance. Nevertheless, even in many simple applications, the performance might degrade when the number of threads increases. Users usually impute this phenomenon to the overhead of creation or termination of threads. However, in our observation, the more significant effect is the dispatching of threads. We discuss the problems on using threads, and present a novel user dispatching mechanism (UDispatch) that provides controllability in user space to improve application performance. Since user threads cannot directly control system resources, a virtual device is adopted between user space and operating system for portability and efficiency instead of adding new system calls through kernel modification. We also experiment UDispatch through multithreading multimedia applications. The results show that a skipline application speeds up to 111.3% and 111.6% on a 4-core machine and an 8-core machine, respectively, and an optimized H.264/AVC decoder speeds up to 18.4% on a 4-core machine.

Software Defined Radio (SDR) allows dynamically changing protocols and functions in order to provide flexible, multiple-standard services to users. A reconfigurable baseband architecture having a set of coarse-grained, heterogeneous execution units is one strategy which can meet this requirement. However, while we can integrate a large number of execution units onto a chip, conventional bus structures may not be able to support the amount of traffic between the functional units due to the shared nature of the bus. In this paper, an SDR baseband platform is mapped onto two different types of on-chip networks, a multicasting CDMA-based network and a conventional 2D-mesh network. Synthesis is performed for both cases using a 0.13 micron CMOS technology library and comparative results for performance and area are provided.

The aim of the work is to integrate the information modulation of the inter-relations between EEG scalp measurements of two brain states in a connectivity graph. We present a sparse differential connectivity graph (SDCG) to distinguish the effectively modulated connections between epileptiform and non-epileptiform states of the brain from all the common connections created by noise, artifact, unwanted background activities and their related volume conduction effect. The proposed method is applied on real epileptic EEG data. Clustering the extracted features from SDCG may present valuable information about the epileptiform focus and their relations.

When a concurrent shared-memory program written with a sequential consistency (SC) model is run on a machine implemented with a relaxed consistency (RC) model, it could cause SC violations that are very hard to debug. To avoid such violations, programmers need to provide explicit synchronizations or insert fence instructions. In this paper, we propose a scheme to detect and eliminate potential SC violations by combining Shasha/Snir's conflict graph and delay set theory with existing data race detection techniques. For each execution, we generate a race graph, which contains the improperly synchronized conflict accesses, called race accesses, and race cycles formed with those accesses. As a race cycle would probably lead to a non-sequential-consistent execution, we call it a potential violation of sequential consistency (PVSC) bug. We then compute the race delays of race cycles, and suggest programmers to insert fences into source code to eliminate PVSC bugs. We further convert a race graph into a PC race graph, and improves cycle detection and race delay computation to O(n 2 ), where n is the number of race access instructions. We evaluate our approach with the SPLASH-2 benchmarks, two large real-world applications (MySQL and Apache), and several multi-threaded Cilk programs. The results show that (1) the proposed approach could effec-tively detect PVSC bugs in real-world applications with good scalability; (2) it retains most of the performance of the concurrent program after inserting required fence instructions, with less than 6.3% performance loss; and (3) the additional cost of our approach over traditional race detection techniques is quite low, with 3.3% on average.

Today, consumers have been able to buy various items with development of e-commerce sites and so on, while it made difficult to find items suitable for the consumer's preference from many items. Because of such situation, recommendation systems that can present items suitable for user's preference have been required. When a person prefers an item, but hesitates what to do, it is an important criterion whether the person's desires is satisfied by the item or ***, we analyzed relationship between consumer's desires and preferred items by evaluation grid method, recommending items based on constructed evaluation grids. Moreover we investigated effectiveness of recommendation based on desires in our experiment and discussed about cross-category recommendation such as recommendation of item that have different attributes or categories.

This paper proposes a common platform called automatic robot toolkit (ART), which offers a message stream dispatch mechanism and system development toolkit for robots. Composing a robotic system requires several heterogeneous components that are different hardware, algorithms and software. Each component is integrated into a well designed robotic system. Those systems are designed based on a particular system and it can be hard to have integration with or within other systems. Nowadays, robotics are more and more complex and intelligent. A common platform could be used to integrate those components according to the object concept. Therefore, the best way is to develop a common platform to integrate the already existing or developing techniques. The proposed common platform offers the message channels for each technique component to subscribe and publish the component's information. The common platform is designed based on the message oriented middleware (MOM) concept which effectively abstracts a multi-channel message transport layer to enable asynchronous exchange of data and event notification. Using this middleware toolkit, one can develop the control, identification, or intelligent algorithms without coding platform constraint.
