Face recognition (FR) for emerging applications such as face tagging for social networking, consumer products, and gamming utilize color images stored in distributed repositories. Such images are often in compressed format and of different dimensions. This compression mismatch problem may adversely affect the performance of the face recognition engine. In this paper, we present a comparative investigation of the image compression mismatch problem. Two commonly used color image based face recognition solutions are utilized. More than three thousand images of 341 subjects, typical of the problem, are collected from three public databases. The experimental results support the main thesis of the paper that recognition performance depends critically on the color image properties.

Fuzzy time series forecasting model is an effective method to solve the nonlinear problems forecasting. However, most published fuzzy time series based models did not count the change trend implicit in historical datum. In this paper, authors proposed a novel method which applied heuristic information to the fuzzy time series model based on Fibonacci sequence. As an example, the USD/JPY exchange rate is tested in this model. The results show that this method not only improves the forecasting accuracy, but decreases the computational complexity.

We study the multicast capacity for hybrid wireless networks consisting of ordinary wireless nodes and base stations under Gaussian Channel model, which generalizes both the unicast capacity and broadcast capacity for hybrid wireless networks. We simply consider the hybrid extended network, where the ordinary wireless nodes are placed in the square region A(n) with side-length n~(1/2) according to a Poisson point process with unit intensity. In addition, m additional base stations (BSs) serving as the relay gateway are placed regularly in the region A(n) and they are connected by a high-bandwidth wired network. Three broad categories of multicast strategies are proposed in this paper. According to the different scenarios in terms of m, n and n_d, we select the optimal scheme from the three categories of strategies, and derive the achievable multicast throughput based on the optimal decision.

Formal verification approaches can guarantee the correctness of security protocols. In this paper we take the well-known Needham-Schroeder public-key authentication protocol as an example, to show how we can apply the symbolic model checker for multiagent systems MCTK, which is developed by us, to the verification of security protocols. One temporal epistemic property is checked successfully both in the original version and the Lowe's revised version of the Needham-Schroeder protocol. The experimental result shows that our method is an effective way to the verification of security protocol.

For large and complex composite Web services which are composed by BPEL and a set of WSDL and XSD documents, we urgently need the aid of the tools in designing and selecting test cases. However, most of mature testing tools which generate test data with the information of WSDL are used for single service while the research for composition remains in the realm of theory. So we apply the theory of data-flow testing and try to develop a testing tool for Web services composition which can automatically detects harmful data-flow anomalies and generate test paths according to all kinds of data flow coverage criteria.

We present the design of pService system for P2P Web services discovery supporting similarity search with its locality-preserving feature based on modified Skip Graph. In pService, the most important property (e.g. service name) of a service is viewed as the indexing key of a peer node. The other properties are extracted as multiattributes which would be mapped into one-dimensional indices using HSFC (Hilbert Space Filling Curve), and assigned to membership vector of the peer node. These two features help to support similarity search in two aspects: peer nodes with similar indexing keys would be distributed neighborly, peer nodes with similar indices will connect to each other through routing table. Our evaluation showed that the pService performs considerable Web services discovery efficiency.

URECA:Efficient Resource Location Middleware for Ubiquitous Environment

We describe an effective resource location framework for ubiquitous computing environments populated by a diverse set of networks, devices, services and computational entities. Our framework provides context adaptation with the aid of a middleware service to improve the quality of resource location. A resource location protocol suitable to each type of network locates resource effectively by means of dynamic reconfiguration to the current context. Our framework is also refined by support for interoperability between different types of resource location protocols occurring across a hybrid ubiquitous network. These characteristics also reduce the control overhead for resource location, saving resource, decreasing latency and permitting a considerable degree of scalability.

The paper presents a joint state and unmeasured input estimation technique for a special class of nonlinear second order macroscopic traffic model. The freeway traffic system is transformed into a quasi and affine approximate Lin- ear Parameter Varying (LPV) form. Observer design technique is formulated using off-line optimization problem subjected to Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions, considering uncertain scheduling parameters. Furthermore, locally designed state estimators are interconnected to cover multiple freeway sections. The elaborated method is validated using real traffic measurements. © 2009 EUCA.

In this paper, a comprehensive cross correlation-based fault diagnostic method is proposed for real time DSP implementation. It covers both fault monitoring and decision making stages. In practice, a motor driven by an adjustable speed drive is run at various operating points where the frequency, amplitude and phase of the fault signatures varies with time. These dynamic changes are considered as one of the common factor that yields erroneous fault tracking and unstable fault detection. In this paper, the proposed algorithms deals with the operating point dependent ambiguities and threshold issues. It is theoretically and experimentally verified that the motor fault can continuously be tracked when the operating point changes within a limited range.
