We introduce a general framework for string kernels. This framework can produce various types of kernels, including a number of existing kernels, to be used with support vector machines (SVMs). In this framework, we can select the informative subsequences to reduce the dimensionality of the feature space. We can model the mutations in biological sequences. Finally, we combine contributions of subsequences in a weighted fashion to get the target kernel. In practical computation, we develop a novel tree structure, coupled with a traversal algorithm to speed up the computation. The experimental results on a benchmark SCOP data set show that the kernels produced by our framework outperform the existing spectrum kernels, in both efficiency and ROC50 scores.

In this paper, we present a timing synchronization scheme of the next generation IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard which is based on MIMO-OFDM technique. The proposed timing synchronization method takes two steps which consist of two modified auto-correlators. For coarse timing synchronization, a sliding window differentiator is used after a conventional auto-correlation in order to avoid plateau problem. The conjugate symmetry property of L-LTS is used for fine timing synchronization. Since cross-correlation based methods are not required, the computational complexity and the number of multiplier can be reduced. In order to reduce the hardware complexity, we have used sign comparators (SC) instead of using multipliers. Based on simulation results, the proposed method outperforms a conventional method. The proposed scheme can be applied to IEEE 802.11n systems and can easily be expanded to frequency synchronization scheme. ©2008 IEEE.

This article reports the first high time resolution measurements of gigantic jets from the Imager of Sprites and Upper Atmospheric Lightning (ISUAL) experiment. The velocity of the upward propagating fully developed jet stage of the gigantic jets was ∼10⁷ m s^-1, which is similar to that observed for downward sprite streamers. Analysis of spectral ratios for the fully developed jet emissions gives a reduced E field of 400-655 Td and average electron energy of 8.5-12.3 eV. These values are higher than those in the sprites but are similar to those predicted by streamer models, which implies the existence of streamer tips in fully developed jets. The gigantic jets studied here all contained two distinct photometric peaks. The first peak is from the fully developed jet, which steadily propagates from the cloud top (∼20 km) to the lower ionosphere at ∼90 km. We suggest that the second photometric peak, which occurs ∼lms after the first peak, is from a current wave or potential wave-enhanced emissions that originate at an altitude of ∼50 km and extend toward the cloud top. We propose that the fully developed jet serves as an extension of the local ionosphere and produces a lowered ionosphere boundary. As the attachment processes remove the charges, the boundary of the local ionosphere moves up. The current in the channel persists and its contact point with the ionosphere moves upward, which produces the upward surging trailing jets. Imager and photometer data indicate that the lightning activity associated with the gigantic jets likely is in-cloud, and thus the initiation of the gigantic jets is not directly associated with cloud-to-ground discharges. A novel digital redesign of the analog model-reference-based decentralized adaptive controller is proposed for the sampled-data large scale system consisting of N interconnected linear subsystems with actuator faults. The adaptation of the analog controller gain is derived by using the model-reference adaptive control theory based on Lyapunov method. In this paper, it is shown that the sampled-data decentralized adaptive control system is theoretically possible to asymptotically track the desired output with a specified performance even when actuator faults occur. Then, a method of actuator fault recovery is proposed. With the estimated faults, one can use the proposed input compensation method to solve actuator faults. In this paper, we also introduce a prediction-based digital redesign method to develop the corresponding sampled-data controller for the sampled-data decentralized adaptive control systems.

Large test data volume and high test power are two of the major concerns for the industry when testing large integrated circuits. With given test cubes in scan-based testing, the "don't-care" bits can be exploited for test data compression and/or test power reduction. Prior work either targets only one of these two issues or considers to reduce test data volume and scan shift power together. In this paper, we propose a novel capture power-aware test compression scheme that is able to keep scan capture power under a safe limit with little loss in test compression ratio. Experimental results on benchmark circuits demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

This paper proposes the self‐timed circuit design. Quasi‐delay insensitive circuit is introduced as asynchronous prototype. The designed circuit focuses on asynchronous processor design. The processor employs asynchronous system bus, asynchronous DMA controller and synchronous interfaces. The system almost completely asynchrony operation except I/O devices and memory interfaces, due to a limitation on the present time devices, the designed has been implemented on spartan‐3E FPGA no. 3S500EFG320 by partitioning each module to prevent place and routing conflict, 100‐Mhz memory frequency connected, and consumes 141, 063 equivalent gate counts. Finally, the timing details of each instruction execution are shown.

This paper describes a motor control system for Robocup (small-size league) robot [1]. Our aim was to build high performance robots at a minimal cost. We achieved a low-cost design with the use of cheap motors and use of small DC motors for speed feedback. All controls were completed by a single microcontroller. We also established predictive controllers in software to improve the system's performance.

Queue computing based programs are generated using a so called level order traversal that exposes all available parallelism in the programs. All instructions within the same level are data independent from each other and are safely to be executed in parallel. This property is leveraged by the compiler generating queue programs with high amounts of grouped independent instructions. Thus, the hardware invests little efforts to find parallelism. In this paper, we present various optimization and design issues of a synthesizable queue processor architecture targeted for embedded applications. A prototype implementation is produced by synthesizing the high-level model for a target FPGA device.

The strong magnetic fields generated by reactors, which not only interfere other electric equipments' regularly running, but also are potentially harmful to substation employees' health, are the main electromagnetic contamination in substations. In this paper, a mixed finite-element (FE) model for dry-type air-core reactor, which considers the effect of eddy current, is proposed for calculation of magnetic fields. According to the analysis of this model, 7 times of the air-core reactor group region is suitable for calculation region. Based on this model, the magnetic fields distribution of equilateral triangle arranged 35kV reactor group in 500kV substation is calculated. The comparison between calculation results and measured values shows that the mixed FE model may accurately assess the magnetic field distribution around air-core reactors and provide theoretical basis for installation of air-core reactors for power department. Besides, based on the magnetic field distribution around air-core reactors, an early-warning mechanism can be established, which can provide safeguard for other electronic equipments running and the substation employees working.
