Amid the urgency to decarbonize power systems, while mitigating extreme weather events, capacity expansion models can play a vital role in reliably planning the expansion of power systems and facilitating the integration of renewable energy (RE) sources. Optimizing capacity expansion generally involves selecting surrogate representative days from forecasts of load and the generation profiles of variable RE resources. To properly select those representative days, we propose a novel input-based clustering approach that utilizes three unique operational characteristics: load shedding, renewable curtailment, and transmission congestion. The proposed method allows for more robust and cost-effective capacity planning. The method is validated using a capacity expansion model and a production cost model aligned with California Independent system Operator (CAISO)’s decarbonization goals, and results in significant cost reduction and substantial decreases in load shedding.

Sampling strategy (e.g., fixed farthest point sampling) of point cloud has been an essential step for developing practical solutions in 3D computer vision tasks. Previous fixed sampling is simple, but suffer from suboptimal performance for downstream tasks. To adapt to target networks properly, adaptive sampling methods with trainable parameters have been recently developed to enhance the performance. However, existing adaptive sampling methods still suffer from the over-coupling problem of target network, and thus become model-specific, which limits their practical applications. To address this issue, we propose a novel general cross-scale decoupled sampling method (GCD-sampling) for point cloud, which consists of original feature cache, cross-scale feature fusion and convex combination learning for better feature extraction. To reduce the coupling relationship with the target task network, our method only utilizes the point cloud coordinates as the input and output of itself. Besides, we introduce an arbitrary scale structure to enable parameter sharing across multi-scale sampling in point cloud networks. Extensive experiments on different architectures demonstrate the effectiveness of our method over other existing adaptive sampling methods. © 2025, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). The gait, as a kind of soft biometric characteristic, can reflect the distinct walking patterns of individuals at a distance, exhibiting a promising technique for unrestrained human identification. With largely excluding gait-unrelated cues hidden in RGB videos, the silhouette and skeleton, though visually compact, have acted as two of the most prevailing gait modalities for a long time. Recently, several attempts have been made to introduce more informative data forms like human parsing and optical flow images to capture gait characteristics, along with multi-branch architectures. However, due to the inconsistency within model designs and experiment settings, we argue that a comprehensive and fair comparative study among these popular gait modalities, involving the representational capacity and fusion strategy exploration, is still lacking. From the perspectives of fine vs. coarse-grained shape and whole vs. pixel-wise motion modeling, this work presents an in-depth investigation of three popular gait representations, i.e., silhouette, human parsing, and optical flow, with various fusion evaluations, and experimentally exposes their similarities and differences. Based on the obtained insights, we further develop a C²Fusion strategy, consequently building our new framework MultiGait++. C²Fusion preserves commonalities while highlighting differences to enrich the learning of gait features. Text classification, a fundamental task in natural language processing (NLP), aims to categorize textual data into predefined labels. Traditional methods struggled with complex linguistic structures and semantic dependencies. The advent of deep learning, particularly recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and Transformer-based models, has significantly advanced the field by enabling nuanced feature extraction and context-aware predictions. Despite improvements, existing models exhibit limitations in balancing interpretability, computational efficiency, and long-range contextual understanding. This paper proposes the Dynamic Bidirectional Elman with Attention Network (DBEAN), which integrates bidirectional temporal modelling with self-attention mechanisms. DBEAN dynamically assigns weights to critical segments of input, improving contextual representation while maintaining computational efficiency. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper investigates the potential of using brushless excitation (BLE) for not only riding through the fault but also to damp inter-area power oscillation with the help of a synchronous generator (SG) used in Type 5 Wind Power Plant (WPP). In BLE, an auxiliary synchronous generator (ASG) behaving like an exciter is coupled and driven by the rotor of the main SG. The BLE's field current's ASG is fed by two separate loops of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS). The AVR system implements a control loop to regulate the generator terminal voltage, V T . For the PSS, the kinetic energy of the wind turbine is utilized according to the estimated rotational speed of the synchronous generator shaft of the SG. It may mitigate the necessity of any curtailment of active power for damping. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified with a three-phase short circuit fault in a two-area power system.

Word Embeddings and Validity Indexes in Fuzzy Clustering

In the new era of internet systems and applications, a concept of detecting distinguished topics from huge amounts of text has gained a lot of attention. These methods use representation of text in a numerical format-called embeddings-to imitate human-based semantic similarity between words. In this study, we perform a fuzzy-based analysis of various vector representations of words, i.e., word embeddings. Also we introduce new methods of fuzzy clustering based on hybrid implementation of fuzzy clustering methods with an evolutionary algorithm named Forest Optimization. We use two popular fuzzy clustering algorithms on count-based word embeddings, with different methods and dimensionality. Words about covid from Kaggle dataset gathered and calculated into vectors and clustered. The results indicate that fuzzy clustering algorithms are very sensitive to high-dimensional data, and parameter tuning can dramatically change their performance. We evaluate results of experiments with various clustering validity indexes to compare different algorithm variation with different embeddings accuracy. © 2022, CC0.

The saliency methods are widely used for generating heatmaps that emphasize the important portions of an input image for deep networks on a specific classification task. Interpretability is crucial for deploying deep neural networks in real-world applications. However, the heatmaps produced by current visual explainable methods may contain or visualize particulars differently. To analyze and compare the visualization of different methods, such as Gradient-based, Activation-based, Perturbation-based, and Region-based methods, we empirically evaluated them on the acute lymphoblastic leukemia (cancer cell) classification task using state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks. We also visualized the essential pathological features (salient parts) that are the reasons for the classification results on the classification of normal versus malignant cell (CNMC) dataset.

Machine learning has been a prominent research focus in recent years, and integrating machine learning methods into automated theorem provers has become a current trend in theorem proving research. Standard contradiction separation rule is a newly proposed multi-clause, dynamic, and synergized deductive inference rule. The key aspect of standard contradiction separation rule is how to plan deduction paths. In order to better plan the deduction path, this paper explores the dynamic learning within the process of contradiction separation deduction and introduces a novel active deductive heuristic algorithm based on reinforcement learning. Experimental results demonstrate that this new algorithm enhances the reasoning capability of the theorem prover Prover9.

The Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) is valued for its lightweight nature and unique functionality, making it a common choice for securing hardware products requiring authentication and key generation mechanisms. In response to the susceptibility of individual PUFs to modeling attacks, advanced PUF variants have been developed to improve security measures. One notable type in this regard is the multiplexer-based composition of arbiter PUFs, known as MPUF, which aims to meet high reliability and security standards simultaneously. Current research on attacking MPUF encounters challenges such as substantial demands for training CRPs and low success rates. In this work, we propose a novel numerical modeling attack strategy for MPUFs. Using Kronecker products from mathematical perspective, this method precisely describe the MPUF model without using complex network architectures, boosting attack accuracy and overall efficiency. Experiment comparison with state-of-the-art works demonstrates that our method achieves better performance in terms of attack accuracy, robustness, and efficiency. Our method is able to successfully attack a (512, 8)-MPUF in 32.71 minutes with 97.14% accuracy, outperforming all existing attack methods on MPUFs. More, we validate our method through experiments with hardware implementations on FPGAs. The advantages of our method also include the adaptability to be employed to attack other MPUF variations like cMPUF and rMPUF, and the capability to be integrated with an existing attack method for launching efficient attack on MPUFs leveraging reliability information. © 2025 IEEE.
