Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is known to be promising for providing anatomical information about white-matter fiber bundles that cannot be obtained by other non-invasive in vivo imaging methods. However, its application is limited because of its low signal-to-noise ratio and significant imaging artifacts. To improve the accuracy of tissue structural and architectural characterization with diffusion tensor imaging 4D wavelet denoising technique is used to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of diffusion tensor images. To evaluate the proposed method, a high SNR data set is built by repeating and averaging the data acquisition several times and is compared to the denoised data. Our results revealed that wavelets would effectively reduce the noise in DTI data with less blurring of tissue types, especially in the white matter. It would suggest that by using the 4D wavelet noise suppression, one could decrease the acquisition time and still have an acceptable SNR.

We model the sum and product riddle in public announcement logic, which is interpreted on an epistemic Kripke model. The model is symbolically represented as a finite state program with n agents. A model checking method to the riddle is developed by using the BDD-based symbolic model checking algorithm for logic of knowledge we developed in [7]. The method is implemented by extending the model checker MCTK [7] and then the solution of the riddle is verified successfully.

In this paper, the feasibility of using active noise control inside personal computers is demonstrated by applying an adaptive filter to Hewlett-Packard's Blackbird 002 Gaming PC. Conditions relating the control signals and the sound heard by an external listener are presented as a means of evaluating the hardware design before applying the adaptive filter. A multichannel stochastic adaptive filter is derived by vectorizing the equations and applying gradient descent and Newton's method. For implementation purposes, data-based approximations to the gradient and hessian are provided. It is shown that a 6dB reduction in sound pressure level is obtainable by adding reference microphones, error microphones, a speaker, and some acoustical foam into the system even though the length of the noise cancelation system is small, approx. 6”, compared to the fundamental wavelength of the noise, approx 23”.

Owing to the difference of soil water in the farm, a system of variable rate irrigation was developed with Visual C++ and MapObjects that can save water as well as can improve economy benefit. Soil water content can be forecasted by using the forecast model of soil water, according to the real soil water content of different sampling sites in this system. Irrigation or not can be decided by comparing the current soil content with the light drought and serious drought index of the crop. The water amount of irrigation can be decided by the analysis of economy benefit according to the model of water consumption-yield, thus the irrigation prescription map can be created. This system can also query the information of fields, manage and analysis the data of soil. The test was performed in national precision agriculture demo farm. © 2008, Springer New York LLC. The move to higher frequencies has stimulated the development of the materials and integration techniques of the RF/microwave/millimeter (mm)-wave areas. Until now, materials commonly used at high frequency are either expensive or have inadequate performance. Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs), have attracted much more attention as advanced candidates as RF/microwave/mm-wave substrate materials for commercial wireless applications due to their combination of features and performance. In this paper, a compact V-band planar microstrip bandpass filter with sharp-rejection, low insertion-loss and wide-bandwidth based on the dual-mode ring resonator is proposed. The filter is fabricated on a LCP substrate by using standard processing technology. The proposed filter exhibits a return loss level better than 10 dB, an insertion loss of 5 dB, and a 3-dB bandwidth of 30%. The simulated and measured results are compared and agree well, which shows the promising potential of LCP laminates for flexible RF/microwave/mm-wave substrates.

In noncooperative Iris recognition one should deal with uncontrolled behavior of the subject as well as uncontrolled lighting conditions. That means imperfect focus, contrast, brightness, and orientation among the others. To cope with this situation we propose to take iris images at both near infrared (NIR) and visible light (VL) and use them simultaneously for recognition. In this paper, a novel approach for iris recognition is proposed so that extracted features of NIR and VL images are fused to improve the recognition rate. When the images do not have enough quality due to focus, contrast, etc., effects of feature fusion is more pronounced. This is the situation in UTIRIS database, which is used in our experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed approach, especially in small training samples, leads to a remarkable improvement on recognition rate compared with either NIR or VL recognition.

Nitric oxide (NO) detection is a critical issue for environmental safety and medical diagnosis due reasons with regard to the toxic properties for human body and metabolic index for respiratory disease, respectively. Development of gas sensor with high sensitivity is very important because the concentration of NO gas in the environment and respiratory tract is extremely low, therefore not readily detectable. The material with nanostructure can improve the sensitivity of sensor owning to surface effect and size effect. Herein, we developed a new type of gaseous nanosensor assembled by 34 nanowires of conducting polymer, PEDOT: PSS. The nanowires were fabricated by dip pen nanolithography (DPN) with the length of 55 um and diameter of 300 nm between golden wires. The NO gas measurement is based on chemiresistor based methods. The result of dynamic measurement of NO gas at 100 ppm shows repeatability and stability; the recovery time is 10.4 minutes. Moreover, the lowest concentration of NO gas in static measurement is 10ppm at 80 C, which also shows the ability sensing at low temperature.

We propose a constrained, three-dimensional, nonparametric, entropy-based, coupled, multi-shape approach to segment subcortical brain structures from magnetic resonance images (MRI). The proposed method uses PCA to develop shape models that capture structural variability. It integrates geometrical relationship between different structures into the algorithm by coupling them (limiting their independent deformations). On the other hand, to allow variations among coupled structures, it registers each structure separately when building the shape models. It defines an entropy-based energy function, which is minimized using quasi-Newton algorithm. To this end, probability density functions (pdf) are estimated iteratively using nonparametric Parzen window method. In the optimization algorithm, constraints are used to improve segmentation quality. These constraints are extracted from training data. Sample results are given for the segmentation of caudate, hippocampus, and putamen, illustrating highly superior performance of the proposed method compared to the most similar methods in the literature.

Pervasive networking environment as social infrastructure has been going to become a reality, especially through the recent considerable progress of semiconductor technology. Considering the case where next generation of pervasive networking is realized over ad hoc network suitable for emergency and some tentative event, some ofauthors study about an data- driven imprementation of Ad hoc and ubiquitous communication environment. It is very important to implement effective protocol handling and routing process in Ad hoc networking environment especially. This paper describes the effectiveness ofan implementation ofprotocol off-loader using networking-oriented data-driven processors CUE (Coordinating User's requirements and engineering constraints). In Ad hoc network, it is necessary to realize connection-less protocol such as UDP/IPfor flexible routing and realtime communication. Firstly, this paper discusses data- driven implementation ofprotocol off-loader on CUE networking board to minimize overheads in protocol handling. Then this paper describes architecture of CUE-v2/CUE-v3 which is available version in CUE processors. This paper finally discusses effectiveness ofprotocol handling off-loader using CUE processor system. It shows that data-driven protocol off-loader can keep minimum turn-around time without runtime overheads.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article.
