A projective image registration algorithm, oriented to consumer devices, is proposed. It exploits a "multi-resolution feature based method" for estimating the projective parameters through a 2D Daubechies discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The algorithm has been fully tested with real image sequences acquired by CMOS sensors and compared to other registration techniques. The obtained results highlight the accuracy of the registration parameters.

A real-time simulation tool, in our case a real-time digital simulator (RTDS), gives the opportunity to study the impact of renewable energy in power systems on a real-time base, driven by actual solar and wind data. In the first part of this paper, the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) is briefly introduced. The application of this analyzing tool is first demonstrated on a detailed model of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) whereas secondly the application on an autonomous power system is shown. Both applications demonstrate the capabilities of this simulator and the added value for power system analysis

We have proposed a method for localization of anatomical landmarks comprised of two steps: 1) information extraction, and 2) information analysis. The focus of this paper is on the second step during which a set of points, found in the first step, is evaluated. This step utilizes a set of rules and eventually generates a confidence factor (CNF) for each set of points that indicates as to what degree they are good representatives of the "landmarks of interest". We also propose two alternative decision-making schemes: 1) Bayesian networks, and 2) possibilistic inference methods. The latter design is expected to outperform the other two as it utilizes both desired and undesired information. Our simulation study resulted in very similar performance for the rule-based and Bayesian schemes. The overall success rate (average of sensitivity and specificity) of the entire proposed method in localization of the hippocampus on MRI images was 83.3% with an accuracy of 99.2% (using rule-based decision-making scheme).

The estimation of channel delays along with their respective complex channel coefficients of different users constitutes the first stage in the detection process at the receiving base station in a DS-CDMA communication system. A multiuser steepest Wiener LMS (MS-WLMS) like structure algorithm along with smoothing/prediction filters to improve tracking quality is suggested. This paper presents a customized and fixed-point hardware parallel implementation of the proposed algorithm for WCDMA uplink transmission in third generation (3G) wireless system. Additional speedup in the execution time is achieved over the well known maximum likelihood channel estimation for DS-CDMA. It is also shown that our solution could achieve the real-time requirements of 3GPP standards applied in WCDMA systems.

The hardware implementation issues of multiuser interference cancellation techniques for multirate asynchronous direct-sequence code division multi-access (DS-CDMA) systems based on variable spreading factor (VSF) are investigated. Based on an algorithm for monorate systems based on cascade adaptive filter multi-user detector (CF-MUD), an analysis is done to choose the best tradeoffs between hardware implementation and algorithmic performance in the third generation (3G) communication scenarios. We investigate two popular techniques, namely low-rate detector (LRD) and high-rate detector (HRD). The goal aims to extend the CF-MUD algorithm and reuse its FPGA-targeted architectures that we previously developed for multirate systems. The developed architectures can be used as an intellectual property (IP) core in a system on a programmable chip (SOPC) based on Xilinx/sup /spl copy// Virtex II Pro and Virtex II processing MUD function for asynchronous multirate systems.

The neutral-point voltage of the three-level, three-phase converter is regulated using a hysteresis controller which selects the appropriate expression for the zero sequence voltage signal which augments the modulation signal used in the discontinuous carrier-based PWM modulation scheme for voltage control. The analytical expressions for the zero sequence voltages are generalized to three sets making its DSP implementation very easy. Simulation and experimental results verify the usefulness of the proposed neutral-point regulation technique

Nonlinear input-output linearization with decoupling concepts are used to effect a high performance speed control of the interior permanent magnet motor drives which also achieves the minimization of the electrical losses - the copper and core losses. This control scheme is unique in that saturation dependent parameters such as the d and q axis inductances and the voltage dependent core loss resistance are all included in the controller structure formulation and implementation. The proposed control scheme differs from known schemes which are either based on perturbation and search methods or on steady state fitted graphs that map the command q and d axis currents based on reference torques. Here, an optimization formulation that dynamically determines the reference currents/voltages required to achieve high performance speed control and total electrical loss minimization is used. The control structure methodology, the nature of the variations of the machine parameters and how they influence the machine efficiency and performance are clearly laid out in experimental and computer simulation results

Three-phase, four leg voltage source converters by virtue of the fourth leg connected to the neutral points of the wye-connected loads effectively handle the zero sequence currents and voltages occasioned by load impedance imbalances and/or nonlinearity of loads. This paper outlines a generalized carrier-based pulse-width modulation scheme for this converter which with a natural reference frame control scheme directly controlling the actual load currents ensure current regulation irrespectively of the nature of the load. The controller structure and design are discussed explicitly with attention paid to considerations leading to the selection of the controller parameters yielding satisfactory location of system poles and zeros. The proposed modulation and control schemes are effectively validated by computer simulation and experimental results for the converter operation in the linear and overmodulation regions

In this paper, we propose a multi-buffer scheduling scheme for streaming video systems. A transmission rate is obtained via a rate control algorithm, which optimally utilizes the network bandwidth and client buffer resources. The server side maintains multiple buffers for packets of different importance levels. It schedules the transmission of each packet based on the source buffer size and playback deadline to reduce the end-to-end distortion. The performance of proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in the simulations, and the simulation results demonstrate the improvement of the average PSNR values compared with two other scheduling schemes
