This paper investigates the numerical results relating to magnetostrictive effects in an electrical steel sample. This is based upon the magneto-mechanical coupling. The magnetic field causes elastic deformation and mechanical stress changes the magnetization curve and the hysteresis loop. As the applied stress is increased, material permeability increases. Pre-stressed magnetic material may show the promise of increased power density in the manufacturing of electric machinery.

Analysis of microelectrode recordings (MER) of extracellular neuronal activity has gained increasing interest due to potential improvements to surgical techniques involving ablation or placement of deep brain stimulators, as is common in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Critical to these procedures is the identification of different brain structures such as the globus pallidus internus (GPI). Evidence suggests that the spike trains from individual neurons contain enough information to identify the brain structure in which they are located. For the work reported here, spike train data gathered during surgical procedure from multiple patients is used. Using a moving window sampling approach, a novel feature extraction method for spike trains was developed. This method is then used in combination with a support vector classification algorithm. Results strongly indicate that the sampling methods reported here are able to extract the necessary information for highly accurate spike source identification.

The simulation results and analysis of a novel transmission technique namely double carrier modulation/differential detection are presented, we show how the differential detection technique improves the system performance significantly, we also demonstrate that this technique overcomes the problems associated with voltage threshold in conventional systems, and how it suggest the possibility to double up the conventional long distance without amplifiers with a BER of as good as 10/sup -13/ at 2.5 Gbps over 150 Km distance with 0 dBm transmit power. The new scheme also shows a much slower degradation with distance than that of conventional IM/DD system.
