This paper presents a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system that incorporates real-valued multiple instance learning (MIL) into the user relevance feedback (RF) to learn the user's subjective visual concepts, especially where the user's most interested region and how to map the local feature vector of that region to the high-level concept pattern of the user. RF provides a way to obtain the subjectivity of the user's high-level visual concepts, and MIL enables the automatic learning of the user's high-level concepts. The user interacts with the CBIR system by relevance feedback in a way that the extent to which the image samples retrieved by the system are relevant to the user's intention is labeled. The system in turn applies the MIL method to find user's most interested image region from the feedback. A multilayer neural network that is trained progressively through the feedback and learning procedure is used to map the low-level image features to the high-level concepts.

In this paper, an end-to-end real-time adaptive protocol for multimedia transmission is presented. The transmission rate is determined by the quadratic probing algorithm that can obtain the maximal utilization of the client buffer and minimal allocation of the network bandwidth. It is also coupled with a congestion control mechanism that can effectively decrease the packet loss rate during network congestion. We investigate the performance of our quadratic probing algorithm in different congestion levels under both Local Area Net (LAN) and Internet environment. Performance analysis reveals that our approach is more robust in avoiding overflow and underflow in different network congestion levels, and adapting to the changing network delays. Comparisons are made with the fixed rate approach and the rate by playback requirement approach. Experimental results show that the proposed real time protocol with rate adjusting quadratic probing algorithm is efficient in utilizing the network resources and decreasing the packet loss ratios.

The use of intelligent systems and machine learning methods, capable of automatic decision making based on already solved cases, and data mining, are getting more and more popular. Here we are faced not only with technical problems, but also with limited confidence in machine learning techniques. In some cases methods that may explicitly show the deduction process are not powerful enough. One of the possibilities is to modify/improve the methods so that the users could easily follow the process of decision making. To solve this problem, a few years ago we started to develop a platform, which enables us to develop, test and use different kinds of hybrid methods. These are meant to combine the advantages of the integrated methods-e.g., power and knowledge representation-that contribute to the quality of the acquired knowledge. In this paper we present a way of using the developed platform in order to obtain new knowledge, based on results from neurophysiological measurements We are every pleased with the performance of our intelligent platform. The first results we obtained already show some improvement in comparison to classic machine learning approaches.

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) attempts to attain higher processor utilization by allowing instructions from multiple independent threads to coexist in a processor and compete for shared resources. Previous studies have shown, however, that its throughput may be limited by the number of threads. A reason is that a fixed thread scheduling policy cannot be optimal for the varying mixes of threads it may face in an SMT processor. Our adaptive dynamic thread scheduling (ADTS) was previously proposed to achieve higher utilization by allowing a detector thread to make use of wasted pipeline slots with nominal hardware and software costs. The detector thread adaptively switches between various fetch policies. Our previous study showed that a single fixed thread scheduling policy presents much room (some 30%) for improvement compared to an oracle-scheduled case. In this paper, we take a closer look at ADTS. We implemented the functional model of the ADTS and its software architecture to evaluate various heuristics for determining a better fetch policy for a next scheduling quantum. We report that performance could be improved by as much as 25%.

The emergence of the computational Grid and the potential for seamless aggregation, integration and interactions has made it possible to conceive a new generation of realistic, scientific and engineering simulations of complex physical phenomena. The inherently heterogeneous and dynamic nature of these application and the Grid presents significant runtime management challenges. In this paper we extend the PRAGMA framework to enable self adapting, self optimizing runtime management of dynamically adaptive applications. Specifically, we present the design, prototype implementation and initial evaluation of policies and mechanisms that enable PRAGMA to autonomically manage, adapt and optimize structured adaptive mesh refinement applications (SAMR) based on current system and application state and predictive models for system behavior and application performance. We use the 3-D adaptive Richtmyer-Meshkov compressible fluid dynamics application and Beowulf clusters at Rutgers University, University of Arizona, and NERSC to develop our performance models, and define and evaluate our adaptation policies. In our prototype, the predictive performance models capture computational and communicational loads and, along with current system state, adjust processors capacities at runtime to enable the application to adapt and optimize its performance.

An operating system (OS) can be viewed as the collection progress of required directives before a computer system can run. Thus, OS is the most important software in any computer system. If OS is risky, then the computer system could be in danger. So, information security has become a critical issue for computer systems, it is necessary to develop a trusted operating system. As the result, in order to improve system security, there are many enhancements, which are developed. Some of them are open source. We can integrate appropriate software to construct a trusted system. The paper first gives a discussion covered the current security problems and the difficulty in solving those problems. Then, we study security function requirements from "protection profile for multilevel operating systems in environments requiring medium robustness", to find important secure features. Next, we demonstrate important security enhancement projects of OS with these corresponding security features. Finally, we give an idea about how to combine some of well-done open source secure software, and satisfy the secure features.

Many entertainment and healing robots have been developed. These robots have synthetic emotions so that they select behavior based on their current emotional state. On the contrary conventional robots which have designed to perform repetitive factor or office jobs do not have such emotions. Usually human operators assign tasks in explicit manner using keyboard or voice commands. In this paper we propose a coordination mechanism between robot mood (an activated emotion) and its task. On one hand, referring to the emotion-task history of the mechanism, the robot selects a task depending on its current mood if there is no explicit task command from the user. On the other hand, when it performs a task, a particular emotion gets boosted based on the same emotion-task history so that this emotion is more likely to be activated by external stimuli.

In order to use data information in the Internet, it is necessary to extract data from web pages. An HTT tree model representing HTML pages is presented. Based on the HTT model, a wrapper generation algorithm AGW is proposed. The AGW algorithm utilizes comparing and correcting technique to generate the wrapper with the native characteristic of the HTT tree structure. The AGW algorithm can not only generate the wrapper automatically, but also rebuild the data schema easily and reduce the complexity of the computing.

We report the development of an artificial haircell (AHC) fabricated using two methods: (1) silicon bulk micromachining and (2) polymer surface micromachining. Both methods leverage efficient three dimensional assembly of microstructures. The AHC is modeled after biological hair cells, a common and versatile mechanoreceptor in biology. The design, fabrication process, along with testing results are discussed in the paper.

Organizational architectures and mission requirements: A model to determine congruence

In order to determine congruence between proposed organizational architectures and evolving mission requirements, an executable model was developed in support of a subject experiment testing the hypothesis that an organization congruent with an expected mission results in better performance than a noncongruent organization. The model is based on the task process, the sequence of stages that occur in order to complete a task, where the delays of each stage are based on the interactions of the task with decision-makers and resources;in this case, tasks are limited to simple tasks completed by a single decision-maker with a single resource. The model is configured to a particular organizational design and simulated with a scenario, a list of tasks and their parameters that characterize the mission. Congruence is determined by using regression analysis to fit a linear equation to the output of the simulation and computing the coefficient of determination to evaluate the fit. The model was developed with trial experiment data and validated with post-experimental results. This model provides the foundation for a future, second order model that will include multiple decision-makers interacting with multiple resources to complete complex tasks. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
