In this paper, we propose a per-class queue management and adaptive packet drop mechanism in the routers for Internet congestion control. We model active queue management as an optimization problem and our proposed mechanism provides congestion control and fairness for different types of traffic flows. An optimal packet drop rate is obtained to maintain a relatively small queue occupancy, which provides a less queue delay delivery of packets. Simulations are conducted to compare our approach with the fixed packet drop rate approach. Moreover, the queue occupancy and the packet drop rates obtained are both upper bounded, which is meaningful for providing the class-based guaranteed delay services for real-time multimedia applications.

A hierarchical approach for the abstraction of digital VLSICs is presented. Circuit layout is hierarchically abstracted into logical constructs of binary tree structures, which may be manipulated to extract circuit functionality for the purpose of verifying design correctness. This paper presents a feasibility study on the application of pattern analysis techniques to classify load change transients and incipient abnormalities in an underground distribution cable lateral. The data were collected using an on-line monitoring system installed in a residential area in Dallas. A set of features obtained from wavelet packet analysis was evaluated. Methods of dimensionality reduction were employed to overcome the curse of dimensionality while preserving a good classification rate. The classification results using k-nearest-neighbor (KNN) classifiers show that the proposed methodology can be used to classify load change transients and incipient abnormalities.

A novel frequency domain Doppler diversity technique for OFDM systems is proposed. The received OFDM signal is first frequency shifted to generate various diversity branches. After demodulation, branch outputs are individually weighted and added together. For Doppler spread signal, it alters fading statistics and improves the bit error rate. Extensive simulations show that combining three diversity branches with proper frequency shifts reduces BER by an order when the normalized Doppler spread is larger than 0.3.

The paradigm of design for biosystem-on-a-chip (BioSoC), is that multidisciplinary skills are required. The need for the architectural design of the BioSoC addresses the next-generation of intelligent information processing systems.

We present a mechanism called the Markov model mediator (MMM) to facilitate the effective retrieval for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Different from the common methods in content-based image retrieval, our stochastic mechanism not only takes into consideration the low-level image content features, but also learns high-level concepts from a set of training data, such as access frequencies and access patterns of the images. The advantage of our proposed mechanism is that it exploits the structured description of visual contents as well as the relative affinity measurements among the images. Consequently, it provides the capability to bridge the gap between the low-level features and high-level concepts. Our experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism can effectively assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries.

A successful application of a new intelligent system design approach called Multimethod in knowledge extraction and discovery in heart attack areas is presented in this paper. The results show that the Multimethod approach is a powerful and promising technique enabling the conformation of existing medical knowledge and more interestingly, also enabling the induction of new facts and hypothesis, which can reveal some new interesting patterns and possibly improve the existing medical knowledge.

An intelligent lumber grading system was developed to provide a new way for estimating the strength of a board by posing the estimation problem as an empirical learning problem. This system processed the X-ray image, extracted geometric features (of 1000 boards that eventually underwent destructive strength testing), and predicted the strength of the lumber by using a neural network. The X-ray image was passed through a threshold filter to separate the knots based on the fact that a denser knot produces a local maximum (as a rounded protrusion in an otherwise almost flat density surface) of the X-ray image. Each knot was modeled by a three-dimensional-cone with seven parameters. Information on all the detected knots such as volume, and knot-area-ratio were fed to a processor to generate 16 geometrical features (such as; the average of knot area ratio, and the number of knots detected in each board), which characterize each board. Then by using back-propagation as the training method, cross correlation as the measure of accuracy, and actual strength of a thousand boards as the empirical data set, a neural network was trained to estimate the strength of each board. The learning system consisted of three layers, with 1, 5, 16 neurons in output, hidden and input layer respectively. Ten-fold cross validation was used to produce an unbiased accuracy of the estimation problem. The learning and testing sets comprised of 900 and 100 boards respectively. By repeating the learning and testing for ten times and averaging the results, a coefficient of determination of 0.4059 was reached in this study for using X-ray images alone. The same methodology was applied to MOE (modulus of elasticity) and a coefficient of determination of 0.56 was reached. The results were improved by fusing the X-ray image and MOE using a learning system consisting of three layers, with 1, 5, 40 neurons in output, hidden and input layer respectively. We investigate and compare a few parallel preconditioning techniques in the iterative solution of large sparse linear systems arising from solid Earth simulation with and without using contact information in the domain partitioning process. Previous studies are focused on using static or matrix pattern based incomplete LU (ILU) preconditioners in a localized preconditioner implementation. Our current studies are concerned with preconditioner performance for solving two different cases with and without known contact information. For the cases with contact information, we use localized threshold value based incomplete LU (ILUT) preconditioner to improve efficiency. For the cases without contact information, we use a global sparse approximate inverse preconditioner with a static sparsity pattern to achieve robustness. Numerical results from simulating ground motion on a parallel supercomputer are given to compare the effectiveness of these parallel preconditioning techniques.
