This paper presents a detailed analysis of the power-supply voltage (IR) drop scaling in DSM technologies. For the first time, the effects of temperature, electromigration and interconnect technology scaling (including resistivity increase of Cu interconnects due to electron surface scattering and finite barrier thickness) are taken into consideration during this analysis. It is shown that the IR-drop effect in the power/ground (P/G) network increases rapidly with technology scaling, and using well-known counter measures such as wire-sizing and decoupling capacitor insertion with resource allocation schemes that are typically used in the present designs may not be sufficient to limit the voltage fluctuations over the power grid for future technologies. It is also shown that such voltage drops on power lines of switching devices in a clock network can introduce significant amount of skew which in turn degrades the signal integrity.

The mission system of an aircraft is a complex real-time distributed system consisting of a mission control computer, different kinds of devices interconnected by a number of serial data buses. The complexity and real-time requirements of mission systems have motivated research into the application of formal techniques to investigate and predict the effects of upgrades on mission system behaviour. We report on a joint research project between the University of South Australia and Australia's Defence Science and Technology Organisation. In previous work we modelled a generic avionics mission system with coloured Petri nets and analysed the model using state spaces. Here, we describe how this model was refined and modified to obtain a coloured Petri net model for the AP-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.

A configuration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) whose surfaces were fully covered with nanoscale nodes was developed in our laboratory. We named this material nodular CNTs or NCNTs. A hydrogen plasma process was used to turn common CNTs into NCNTs. Combined with this process, a technique has been developed to make planar NCNTs field emitters. Field emission experiments showed that planar NCNTs emitters had superior field emission characteristics. Specifically, the emission site density was increased by the order of 106/cm2. A suggestion was given to interpret the formation of NCNTs and a simple model was also proposed to explain the improvement of field emission properties. This technique was found to be an easy way to change the geometric character of CNTs in large quantities and will be useful for creating planar field emitters used in field emitter light sources or display devices.

Since knowledge management becomes an important issue, knowledge management system (KMS) plays a crucial role to enhance the performance of knowledge management. It is a difficult work to build a KMS from scratch. In order to facilitate KMS reusability, we propose a scheme based on XML binding technology which can automatically generate the knowledge management components so that one may reengineer the system to accommodate with different requirements of other domains.

Application of logical effort on transistor-level analysis of different 64-bit adder topologies is presented. Logical effort method is used to estimate delay and impact of different adder topologies and to evaluate the validity of the results obtained using logical effort methodology. The tested adder topologies were Carry-Select, Han-Carlson, Kogge-Stone, Ling, and Carry-Lookahead adder. The quality of the obtained estimates was validated by circuit simulation using H-SPICE for 1.8V, 0.18µm Fujitsu technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Transforming knowledge between connectionist and symbolic machine learning approaches is not a uniform task and there is no general recipe for performing it. Irrespective of the way the transformation of knowledge, the developed methods usually fall into two classes: methods with high rate of transformed knowledge is done, but with a lot of restrictions concerning the type of data in the training sets, training methods, and the size of data sets;and methods with moderate rate of transformed knowledge, but with less restrictions. Our main interest was to find or develop a technique that would possess the knowledge acquisition power of neural networks and explanation power of decision trees. That is why we developed a NN-DT Cascade method, an embedded hybrid of neural networks and decision trees, which is capable of transforming a part of knowledge from the neural network into a decision tree. © 2002 Nanyang Technological University.

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

In a sensor network, the infrastructure (in terms of the sensor capabilities, number of sensors, and deployment strategy) plays a significant role in determining the performance of the network. In this paper, we study the effect of infrastructure decisions on the performance of a sensor network. We study the effect of the infrastructure for two types of network delivery models (phenomenon driven and continuous) and different network protocols (DSR, DSDV and AODV). We show the performance both in terms of network efficiency as well as meeting the application accuracy and latency demands. By exploring the criteria for effective infrastructure configurations, we open the door for network optimizations that control the effective topology to better achieve the application requirements.

In this paper, an end-to-end congestion controlled optimal bandwidth allocation scheme with a transmission rate control mechanism for multimedia transmission is proposed. This rate control mechanism aims at minimizing the allocated rate and maximizing the utilization of the client buffer. By adjusting the transmission rate in response to the buffer occupancy and the playback requirements in the client, and variations in the network delay and packet loss rate, an acceptable quality-of-service (QoS) level can be maintained at the end systems. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can generally achieve high network utilization and low losses, and no network support is needed. The periodic structure modeling technique is employed to investigate the transmission line characteristic of the stripline with adjacent metal-filled via-array (SAMVA). The unit-cell modeling (UCM) using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was utilized to determine the full-wave effect on the propagation property of the high speed interconnecting structure defined by longitudinally periodic boundary condition in package and board level. UCM is the efficient modeling methodology for the periodic transmission line structure. Specifically, the slow wave effect of SAMVA will be discussed. © 2002 IEEE.
