Modern medicine generates huge amounts of sensitive data. Bi-conically tapered single-mode couplers are fabricated using a fiber fusion coupler workstation. Losses found during fabrication are analyzed for a range of elongation. It is found that longer elongations will lower the losses. Theoretically, the losses are due to the taper paths crossing delineating curves. These losses which occur during tapering process are not really adiabatic if part of the signal power is not guided at the end of tapering process. In other words, taper path will not be inside adiabatic region of cladding guidance. It will cross from core-guidance region into lossy region or non-adiabatic region of cladding guidance.

The concept of twisted pair on the cable interconnection can be readily applied to the differential lines on printed circuit board (PCB), which enables enhanced immunity against crosstalk and radiated emission. In this paper, twisted differential line (TDL) is implemented on PCB and fully characterized. First, the transmission characteristics of TDL including propagation constant and differential impedance are extracted by using 3D full-wave analysis. The potential of TDL for the transmission of over GHz signal and enhanced immunity against crosstalk and radiated emission is clearly shown. Second, the measurement results reconfirm TDL's capability as a good transmission line structure over several GHz. Also, it is modeled by a simple equivalent circuit, based on measurement results. Third, the enhanced immunity of TDL against crosstalk and radiated emission is clearly demonstrated by measurement results. TDL is compared with other transmission line structures showing its superiority. Finally, several ideas to improve TDL's performance are suggested and verified to be useful.

An issue of primary importance in the field of reinforcement learning (RL) is the tradeoff between exploration and exploitation. Balancing exploration and exploitation becomes even more crucial in an intelligent agent designed to operate in dynamic environments. Three methods are proposed to improve the performance of traditional RL methods such as Q-learning. The proposed improvements are: the addition of a forgetting mechanism, the use of feature-based state inputs, and the addition of a hierarchical structure to an RL agent. Experimental results are presented and utilized in evaluation of the proposed methods. The proposed algorithms are compared to established methods and to theoretically optimal solutions.
