Recently, efficient network resource management and quality-of-service (QoS) guarantee become more and more important for multimedia applications and services, especially when considering network delays. An optimal bandwidth allocation scheme is introduced. It achieves maximal utilization of the client buffer and minimal allocation of bandwidth for each client. The proposed scheme allocates bandwidth to multiple clients requesting services from a server by adjusting the transmission rates based on the client buffer occupancy, the playback requirements of the individual client and the network delays. Simulations for the single client and multiple client scenarios are conducted under different network congestion levels. The simulation results show that our approach performs better in comparison with the fixed rate allocation approach and the rate by playback requirement approach, since it avoids underflows and overflows efficiently and provides QoS for more clients with limited available bandwidth in the network.

This paper describes model-based, active control of an aftertreatment system for a spark ignition engine equipped with a three-way catalyst (TWC) and pre- and post-TWC oxygen sensors. A controller is designed to manage the oxygen storage level in the TWC in order to maximize the simultaneous conversion efficiencies of oxides of nitrogen, NO/sub x/, unburned hydrocarbons, HC, and carbon monoxide, CO. Linear exhaust gas oxygen sensors (UEGOs) are used to measure pre- and post-catalyst A/F. The pre-catalyst A/F measurement is assumed to be biased in addition to being corrupted by zero-mean noise, while the post-catalyst measurement is assumed to be only corrupted by zero-mean noise. A series controller configuration is adopted. The upstream controller provides relatively rapid response to disturbances, while the downstream controller uses an extended Kalman filter (observer) to estimate the relative oxygen level. The estimated value of oxygen storage is then used to regulate the relative oxygen level of the TWC to 50%. The performance and robustness of the proposed control system in the face of noise and model uncertainty are evaluated through extensive simulations.

We develop noninvasive MRI techniques that quantify the permeability of the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB). Using such gadolinium compounds as Gd-DTPA and gadomer-17, changes in R1 (R1=1/T1) can be measured and used as estimates of tissue concentration versus time, thus permitting estimates of BBB permeability parameters. Estimating BBB permeability parameters requires deconvolution in a linear system, a task that has been accomplished heretofore by nonlinear least-squares procedures, although these techniques tend to instability in the presence of noise. We introduce a method using Z-transform and Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) modeling to perform this deconvolution. This method has the advantage that it linearizes the optimization procedure by which parametric estimates are formed, and it stabilizes the deconvolution. in the presence of noise.

Quickly transmitting large datasets in the context of distributed computing on wide area networks can be achieved by compressing data before transmission, However such an approach is not efficient when dealing with higher speed networks. Indeed, the time to compress a large file and to send it is greater than the time to send the uncompressed file. In this paper we explore and enhance an algorithm that allows us to overlap communications with compression and to automatically adapt the compression effort to currently available network and processor resources.

Anaphora always appears in the text and it is a hot topic in linguistics and computational linguistics area. Anaphora resolution is an important part of the information extraction, and it is also important to discourse understanding, machine translation, abstract extraction and so on. After studying on the text in Chinese financial domain, an anaphora resolution system is proposed, which is built on a set of filtration rules and a set of evaluation rules. The experiment result shows the precision is 91.4%.

This paper proposes an intelligent diagnosis method for plant machinery using wavelet transform (WT) genetic programming (GP) and possibility theory. The WT is used to extract feature spectra of each machine state from measured vibration signal for distinguishing faults. Excellent symptom parameters (SP) for detecting fault states are automatically generated by GP. The membership functions of symptom parameters are established using possibility theory for resolving the ambiguous diagnosis problems. The methods proposed in this paper are verified by applying them to the fault diagnosis of gear equipment.

An effective content-based visual image retrieval system is presented. This system consists of two main components: visual content extraction and indexing, and query engine. Each image in the image database is represented by its visual features: color and spatial information. The system uses a color label histogram with only thirteen bins to extract the color information from an image in the image database. A unique unsupervised segmentation algorithm combined with the wavelet technique generates the spatial feature of an image automatically. The resulting feature vectors are relatively low in dimensions compared to those in other systems. The query engine employs a color filter and a spatial filter to dramatically reduce the search range. As a result, queue processing is speeded up. The experimental results demonstrate that our system is capable of retrieving images that belong to the same category.

There has been considerable interest in the modeling and simulation of hybrid dynamic systems (HDS). As an effective modeling tool of discrete event dynamic systems, Petri nets have a dual nature of a graphical tool and a mathematical object. In this paper, an extension of Petri net named generalized differential Petri nets (GDPN) is proposed to model HDS that have a combination of discrete-event evolution and continuous state evolution. Differential place and differential transition defined by Demongodin et al. (1998) are used to model the numeral simulation of the continuous dynamic process, and the weights defined on the directed arcs that connects the differential transitions and places are extended from real numbers to real matrices. The marking of differential place are also enlarged from real numbers to real vectors. Then the evolution rules and modeling method of HDS with GDPN are introduced. Two examples are used to illustrate the modeling power of GDPN in HDS.

An abstract multimedia semantic model called the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model is proposed to model the RTSP-based (real-time streaming protocol) multimedia presentation systems. RTSP provides a set of methods to support the functionality of "VCR-like" remote control on the client side so that users are allowed to control playback of the streaming media. The MATN model is used to model RTSP actions as well as temporal relations and synchronization control of the media streams. The advantages of using the MATN model are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of modification. Furthermore, a formal definition of the MATN model and modeling of RTSP actions using the MATN model are presented in detail.
