Conditional capture and conditional precharge techniques for high-performance flip-flops are reviewed in terms of power and delay. It is found that application of conditional techniques can improve energy-delay product for up to 14% for 50% input activity and save more than 50% in power consumption for quiet input. This property makes conditional methods suitable for high-performance VLSI systems.

A new method of Chinese grammar rules learning is put forward in this paper. The key point of this method is to use part-of-speech (POS), semantic and contextual information together in learning and expressing Chinese grammar rules. In this way, not only Context Free Grammar (CFG) rules can be learnt, but also the ambiguous structures in POS can be identified automatically. Furthermore, non-ambiguous semantic rules and forbidden rules can be produced from ambiguous rules by using semantic and contextual information. Experimental results demonstrate that the complexity of Chinese parsing is greatly reduced using the different rules learnt by our method.

One of the popular network security programs supporting host access control is the 'TCP Wrapper' (Venema, 1992). TCP Wrapper is a software-only system and many computers connected to the Internet are using it. However, TCP Wrapper does 'IP address-based' access control. The IP address is not such a reliable source when authenticating a host. We point out two possible attacks against the TCP Wrapper, propose a new way to prevent them, and describe the prototype implementation, Ethernet Wrapper. By adding an Ethernet address check, we augmented the TCP Wrapper. The test results showed that Ethernet Wrapper can prevent such attacks effectively.

In this paper we describe our approach towards the second level digital techniques course suited for system-on-Chip (SoC) oriented curriculum. Due to enhanced utilization of synthesis techniques and higher level block-oriented design, new requirements for digital hardware design are set up. Our working hypothesis is that the course focus needs to be in a systematic working set based on general transformation and refinements are more important than a presentation of detailed and specific target solutions. Thus the student should master the methodology and understand the underlying principles, which will enable him or her, to utilize more effectively the advanced VHDL synthesis techniques, which are covered in the follow-up course.

The identification of the overlapped objects is a great challenge in object tracking and video data indexing. For this purpose, a backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm is proposed to assist an unsupervised video segmentation method called the "simultaneous partition and class parameter estimation" (SPCPE) algorithm to identify the overlapped objects in the video sequence. The backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can identify the split segment (object) and use the information in the current frame to update the previous frames in a backtrack-chain manner. The split algorithm provides more accurate temporal and spatial information of the semantic objects so that the semantic objects can be indexed and modeled by multimedia input strings and the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model. The MATN model is based on the ATN model that has been used in artificial intelligence (AI) areas for natural language understanding systems, and its inputs are modeled by the multimedia input strings. In this paper, we will show that the SPCPE algorithm together with the backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can significantly enhance the efficiency of spatio-temporal video indexing by improving the accuracy of multimedia database queries related to semantic objects.

In high-speed packages, the high-frequency characteristic of the interconnection structure becomes increasingly important. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of the stripline placed on the meshed ground plane (SMEP) are determined. The effective dielectric constant and the characteristic impedance of the single SMEP are determined by utilizing the full-wave analysis. For the longitudinally periodic structure modeling of SMEP, the finite-difference time-domain method based on Floquet's theorem is used. The slow wave effect and the high impedance characteristic are observed. In addition to the single SMEP analysis, the propagation and coupling property of the coupled SMEP is also presented, which is very important in the cross-talk modeling.

Testing core-based SOCs poses a big challenge to test engineers. To test core-based SOCs, an important step is to get test sets for testing cores. Soft cores are usually provided with hardware description languages such as VHDL and Verilog. It is much more difficult to generate test sets at higher level than at logic level. Recently, researchers have made efforts to develop test pattern generation algorithms and tools at RTL level. Function test is basically used for the test generation at high level. Exhaustive function test can detect any functional faults including multiple faults and the test pattern generation procedure is simple. However, exhaustive function test is unrealistic for practical application as too many test patterns are required. The alternative way is to use pseudo-exhaustive function test, which can reduce the number of patterns while keep high fault coverage. Pseudo-exhaustive testing was first introduced by E.J. Macluskey, but it is limited to logic level. In this paper, we propose a method to generate pseudo-exhaustive test sets at function level. The proposed method can be used to generate test sets for IP cores, specially, for soft cores.
