The mapping of the electromagnetic fields above a microwave circuit can be of great importance in detecting desirable and undesirable interactions of the circuit with its surroundings and failure diagnosis of microelectronic integrated circuits. As a time-domain pulse measurement technique, photoconductive sampling can measure picosecond electric fields when the switch is positioned in free-space as well as picosecond potential pulses. In this paper, we develop a photoconductive electric-field probe with less than a picosecond temporal resolution and /spl mu/m spatial resolution for picosecond pulse propagation properties measurement. The probe was fabricated using a semiconductor micromachining process based on low-temperature-grown GaAs (LT-GaAs) lift-off thin film technique (ELO).

To animate four-dimensional medical imaging, it is often required to interpolate missing data between consecutive 3D imaging volume or objects. A multidimensional interpolation scheme can be used for this purpose. However, it is in general very computationally intensive. The authors present an interactive approach to animate 3D geometric changes of medical imaging in 4D. We perform interpolation in 2D and treat 3D points stored on images as display primitives to fast visualize 3D change in shapes. This approach avoids interpolation in 3D and therefore it is much faster than traditional multidimensional interpolation methods.

Future welfare models should meet the needs of a large group of aged and disabled people. Present research and technology efforts in this direction are oriented toward the development of highly effective home-installed devices which will provide the user with continuous assistance in different everyday activities. The problems and needs of the elderly and the disabled vary from person to person over a large range, and with many serious requirements. Modern designs for such devices are oriented toward solutions where the user is less engaged in the control process, and the interaction between the device and the user ishuman-friendly, i.e., the devices should possess a high level of intelligence in their controls, actions, and interactions with the user, offering him/her a high level of comfort and functionality. This paper considers a mixed control mode as a better alternative for human-machine interactions for users with great movement disability. Some examples of easy direct control are discussed.

Although many high-performance computer systems are now multiprocessor-based, little work has been done in real-time concurrency control of transaction executions in a multiprocessor environment. A real-time concurrency control protocol designed for uniprocessor or distributed environments may not fit the needs of multiprocessor-based real-time database systems because of a lower degree of concurrency of the transaction executions and a larger number of priority inversions. This paper proposes the concept of a priority cap to bound the maximum number of priority inversions in multiprocessor-based real-time database systems to meet transaction deadlines and to explore the abundant computing resources of parallel computer systems. A series of experiments is conducted to evaluate the capability of the proposed methodology in scheduling real-time transactions in a parallel fashion.

This paper presents the design of an early condition resolution circuit. The proposed circuit works in parallel with the arithmetic unit, and calculates the Equal to (EQ), Greater-than (GT), Less-than (LT), Overflow (OV), Underflow (UF), and Carry-out (C/sub out/), conditions. The proposed logic is reconfigurable, and can calculate all the conditions (mentioned above) for one 64-bit, two 32-bit, four 16-bit, or eight 8-bit signed and unsigned operands. The reconfigurability of the logic is achieved using only four control signals. Two of the control signals (Part O, Part 1) are used to partition the logic into 64, 32, 16, or 8-bit independent condition resolvers and the Sign control signal is used to control the signed/unsigned operation. The Add-Sub control signal specifies and controls the Add/Subtract operation for the condition resolution. In order to achieve high speed with reconfigurability and minimum area, new techniques are developed for calculating the conditions before the results are available. The proposed logic is designed for VLIW or Media processors, which require a high degree of reconfigurability, and high speed operation. It can also be used in MIPS family of processors for early branch condition resolution, to avoid branch stalls. Simulations of realizations in a standard digital CMOS fabrication technology show a 30% improvement in speed and a 25% savings in area using the approaches presented here.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have a variety of potential civil and military applications. As MEMS become widely implemented, the application of closed-loop control methods to MEMS will lead to higher degrees of certainty and reliability of microelectromechanical operation in physically demanding environments. This paper presents an overview of research and development progress in the area of MEMS control at West Virginia University. The implementation and simulation of a closed-loop stroke-length control of a lateral comb actuator is presented. The closed-loop scheme implemented is based on a common proportional, integral, derivative (PID) linear feedback control. The position signal of the lateral comb actuator device was obtained using a through-wafer free-space optical probe. The paper also includes further progress in both linear and nonlinear feedback position control schemes.

Emerging parallel or distributed heterogeneous real-time computer systems with many disparate constraints and requirements would benefit from a unifying and comprehensive systems engineering support in the design, testing and deployment phases, which interfaces with a human at a very high level and efficiently handles the system complexity. We present an approach to integration of: a compiler and constraint logic programming-based approach to design and engineering of complex real-time systems; and an online performance analysis and visualization technology with steering. An example distributed real-time system is used to help describe the integrated approach. Details are presented about how the involved technologies are used to help system developers and users achieve better system performance through on-line repair and reconfiguration.

The deregulation of the electric power industry in Europe is the major issue nowadays. The new environment raises questions concerning all sectors of the electric power industry. Nevertheless, the transmission system is the key point in market development since it puts constraints to the market operation due to technical requirements. Especially, in systems having weak connections among areas, congestion problems arise due to line overloading or to voltage security requirements. This paper focuses on topics concerning voltage security in a deregulated power market and related market issues. Results by the application of the proposed methodology in the Greek Electric Power system (EPS) are presented.

As mobile computing gains popularity, the need for ad hoc routing protocols will continue to grow. There have been numerous simulations comparing the performance of these protocols under varying conditions and constraints. One question that arises is whether the choice of MAC protocol affects the relative performance of the routing protocols being studied. This paper investigates the answer to that question by simulating the performance of three ad hoc routing protocols when run over different MAC protocols. It is determined that the choice of MAC layer protocol does, in fact, affect the relative performance of the routing protocols.
