I/O for parallel and distributed systems has drawn increasing attention over the past decade as it has become apparent that I/O performance, rather than CPU performance, may be the key limiting factor in the performance of future systems. Prefetch is the fundamental approach for improving the overall read performance. At present, there are some well-known prefetching algorithms in parallel and distributed systems, such as LRU-Lookahead, Fixed Horizon, and greedy algorithmin. In this paper, we study these parallel prefetching algorithms and explore the performance characteristics of each of the algorithms using the trace-driven simulation. We find that when performance is limited by I/O stall, aggressive prefetch helps to alleviate the problem. However, conservative prefetch performs well in computing-bound situations. Moreover, we find that carefully choosing replacement decision is not necessary to balance the load across the disks when the data is well laid out

We demonstrate electrical properties of an advanced memory structure with high-k dielectric stack of HfAlO/HfSiO/HfXIO and p-type metal gate IrO 2 . Combining advantages of high-k HfAlO, good trapping capability of HfSiO, and high work function of the IrO 2 gate, we were able to attain much better retention with 10-year DeltaV th decay ratio within 18%, higher erasing speed with DeltaV th of 3V within 0.5ms at Vg equiv -12V, and lower operation voltage as well as lower reading voltage, compared to other contending device structures

Study on An Absolute Non-Collision Hash and Jumping Table IP Classification Algorithms

In order to classify packet, we propose a novel IP classification based the non-collision hash and jumping table trie-tree (NHJTTT) algorithm, which is based on noncollision hash Trie-tree and Lakshman and Stiliadis proposing a 2-dimensional classification algorithm (LS algorithm). The core of algorithm consists of two parts: structure the non-collision hash function, which is constructed mainly based on destination/source port and protocol type field so that the hash function can avoid space explosion problem; introduce jumping table Trie-tree based LS algorithm in order to reduce time complexity. The test results show that the classification rate of NHJTTT algorithm is up to 1 million packets per second and the maximum memory consumed is 9 MB for 10 000 rules. Arithmetic operation's execution time in real-time system is bounded by deadlines. The method commonly used to meet these deadlines is by employing any suitable process-scheduling algorithm, which may contain a potential weakness. If time needed to operate is longer than its deadline, then the result's quality will be poor. This is mainly caused by the algorithms of the arithmetic operations commonly used nowadays do not choose the most significant data to be processed first. This research tries to design new algorithm and its processing unit that works based on real-time principles, which starts its computation process from the highest valued digit and provides its intermediate-results that can be accessed anytime during the process. Designing tool used in this research is MAX+plus II Baseline 10.2 software. This research accomplishes in showing the performance of the new algorithm and its processing unit, which is better than the performance of the conventional algorithm.

The Next Generation Internet Server (NGIS) is a system specialized in Internet-based cyber communities in Korea with the high-performance Internet-based communication infrastructure, high quality of wireless communication environment, and high degree of Internet usage. In this paper, we present architectures and design features of operating system for NGIS. The Operating system (OS) is composed of an OS kernel, commands, libraries, and system utilities. system utilities include performance tuning, system status monitor. We describe the overall structure of the OS subsystem, its major components, the roles of each component, and the relations among components. These include the enhancement of the network and system performance, the support of new hardware such as NS device, I/O driver (ioctl style) for a system monitoring, and utilities for a performance analysis environment.

This system has abilities to collect and deliver infomation and cooperate with other robots etc. As a part of this project, multiple CMOS cameras are integrated in a sensor head, and software for generating panorama image and distance information is developed.

Effects of Noise and Jitter in Bandpass Sampling

BandPass Sampling (BPS) is an undersampling technique by intentional aliasing. BPS enables one to have an interface between the IF stage and the ADC in a radio receiver. Conventional uniform BPS at Nyquist rate normally results in a low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) due to noise spectrum aliasing. The noise (e.g. kT/C noise introduced in a voltage-mode sampler) is combined in each of the Nyquist bands within the bandwidth of the sampling device. Also timing jitter causes a performance degradation in BPS. In this paper, signal spectrum aliasing, noise aliasing and jitter effects in BPS is analyzed. It is verified by simulation that NonUniform Sampling (NUS) has the potential to suppress signal spectrum aliasing and relax the requirement on the anti-aliasing (AA) filter. Jitter effects in BPS are compared to LowPass Sampling (LPS) case. However, a signal cannot be reconstructed from its nonuniform samples by using only ideal lowpass filtering (classic Shannon’s reconstruction). Finally, signal reconstruction in the presence of noise and jitter are investigated for three Reconstruction Algorithms (RAs) aimed at NUS.

USN realizes the integration of SAN and NAS with IP network, but it brings new security consideration such as user authorization, data privacy and integrity. A USN model based on the third party transfer protocol is suggested to realize the security scheme. This security scheme has the following characteristics: A key distribution scheme is used to create credentials for users in order to reduce authorization server performance penalty;Using HMAC authenticates users requests so as to minimize computation overhead;Performing encryption/decryption of data at clients and storing data checksums on the storage will minimize the storage performance penalty;The lockbox is used to integrate keys in order to minimize the sum of keys need managed by authorization server. Experiments show that it takes less than 10% performance overhead to realize the security scheme for USN comparing the baseline USN. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

We report on the experiments about detection of the THz radiation by silicon FETs with nanometer gate lengths. The observed photo-responses measured as a function of the gate voltage are all in agreement with the predictions of the Dyakonov-Shur theory. The plasma wave parameters deduced from the experiments allow us to predict also the possibility of resonant detection in THz range by nanometer size silicon devices.
