Bi-conically tapered single-mode couplers are fabricated using a fiber fusion coupler workstation. Losses found during fabrication are analyzed for a range of elongation. It is found that longer elongations will lower the losses. Theoretically, the losses are due to the taper paths crossing delineating curves. These losses which occur during tapering process are not really adiabatic if part of the signal power is not guided at the end of tapering process. In other words, taper path will not be inside adiabatic region of cladding guidance. It will cross from core-guidance region into lossy region or non-adiabatic region of cladding guidance.

Due to the lack of research in the field of minority nationality character recognition, printing Tibetan character recognition was studied as an example in this paper. An experimental system was set up by applying fuzzy direction line features, which performs very effectively in the off-line Chinese character recognition, into printing Tibetan characters recognition. In this paper we propose an interconnection scheme for the autonomous error-tolerant (AET) cell introduced in a paper by Valtonen et al. (2001). The objective here is to partition the system into identical, physically autonomous and highly configurable cells that can operate without outside control or synchronization. In billion transistor Network-on-Chip (NoC) circuits, an AET cell fabric could prove highly flexible and reliable, and allow for low replication costs, due to homogeneousity. However, many challenges persist before a useful system can be constructed: the need for (i) scalable long-distance communication-global bus wiring fits poorly into a homogeneous, symmetric fabric and limits scalability, (ii) flexible communication-cells in all directions, within a given range, should be accessible and (iii) self-synchronizing topologies, due to the absence of external synchronization; (iv) the interconnect scheme is to be implemented using near-future technology generations, and (v) the fabric should be efficient when constituting billions of cells.

Anaphora always appears in the text and it is a hot topic in linguistics and computational linguistics area. Anaphora resolution is an important part of the information extraction, and it is also important to discourse understanding, machine translation, abstract extraction and so on. After studying on the text in Chinese financial domain, an anaphora resolution system is proposed, which is built on a set of filtration rules and a set of evaluation rules. This paper proposes an intelligent diagnosis method for plant machinery using wavelet transform (WT) genetic programming (GP) and possibility theory. The WT is used to extract feature spectra of each machine state from measured vibration signal for distinguishing faults. Excellent symptom parameters (SP) for detecting fault states are automatically generated by GP. The membership functions of symptom parameters are established using possibility theory for resolving the ambiguous diagnosis problems. The methods proposed in this paper are verified by applying them to the fault diagnosis of gear equipment.

There has been considerable interest in the modeling and simulation of hybrid dynamic systems (HDS). As an effective modeling tool of discrete event dynamic systems, Petri nets have a dual nature of a graphical tool and a mathematical object. In this paper, an extension of Petri net named generalized differential Petri nets (GDPN) is proposed to model HDS that have a combination of discrete-event evolution and continuous state evolution. Differential place and differential transition defined by Demongodin et al. (1998) are used to model the numeral simulation of the continuous dynamic process, and the weights defined on the directed arcs that connects the differential transitions and places are extended from real numbers to real matrices. The marking of differential place are also enlarged from real numbers to real vectors. Then the evolution rules and modeling method of HDS with GDPN are introduced. Two examples are used to illustrate the modeling power of GDPN in HDS.
