Evolution of AVS video coding standards: twenty years of innovation and development

Ever since the founding of the Audio and Video Coding Standard(AVS) Workgroup of China in 2002, it has been dedicated to advancing and innovating the digital audio-video industry with highly efficient and economical encoding/decoding technologies. Three representative generations of video coding standards have been finalized and published, consistently improving the coding performance in the past two *** series of AVS standards establish solid foundations for ubiquitous video applications in the areas including acquisition, coding, production, delivery, integrated system, public service, general screen content, and mixed reality media. Along with the standardization process, an extensive amount of studies have been carried out on efficiency-aware designation, algorithm optimization, and hardware implementation of these innovative video coding techniques. This paper explains how those developed techniques provide a lasting impact on the video coding community, extensively, technologically, and systematically. In particular, we provide a comprehensive survey of the three generations of the standards, and timely and in-depth summarize the efforts of the AVS video coding standards in the twenty years. The rate-distortion performance comparisons,in particular in terms of the 8K ultra-high-definition(UHD) contents, reflect the elegant design of the state-of-the-art AVS3 standards. We have also elaborated on a variety of well-established and promising applications, including commercial level real-time 8K encoder, high-frame-rate decoder chip for cell phone,and live streaming solution for sports. In addition, the China Central Television(CCTV) of China Media Group(CMG), the state television of China, has officially launched the first 8K broadcasting channel(CCTV-8K) since 2021 using AVS3. Given the significant success realized by the AVS standards, it is envisioned that a new era of 8K UHD video is arriving.

The challenge of interpretability remains a significant barrier to adopting deep neural networks in healthcare domains. Although tree regularization aims to align a deep neural network's decisions with a single axis-aligned decision tree, however, relying on one tree for all inputs often leads to sub-optimal performance and interoperability. To address this limitation, we propose an enhanced tree regularization method that integrates a post-hoc visual explainable model such as Grad-CAM. This approach guides the deep model to be well-approximated by decision trees tailored to the salient regions identified by Grad-CAM in the input space. We rigorously validate the effectiveness of this framework on two cancer cell datasets: CNMC, which focuses on acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells, and ISBI2016, which comprises benign and malignant skin lesions. The results demonstrate that the proposed method delivers simpler and more interpretable explanations without compromising accuracy, thereby advancing the interpretability of deep learning models in critical healthcare applications. © 2024 IEEE.

Recently, remarkable progress has been achieved in single image super-resolution using methods based on CNN and Transformer architectures. However, existing approaches often construct a substantial number of network layers, leading to a significant increase in performance requirement and memory consumption, thereby limiting the practical deployment and usability of the models. To address this issue, we propose an Alternating CNN Transformer Block and an Integrative CNN Efficient Transformer for single image super-resolution. We enhance feature extraction efficiency by combining CNN within and between Transformer modules. In addition, we propose two novel structures: Multi-branch Gated CNN and Parallel Channel Attention, aiming to efficiently extract local spatial information and global channel information from images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model achieves high performance while maintaining low model complexity. The proposed model attains PSNR values of 32.32 and 30.78 for the Set5 and Manga109 benchmark datasets, respectively, at a scale factor of ×4. Compared to other lightweight super-resolution models, our proposed model outperforms them at lower computational costs. Deep learning (DL) introduces a novel data-driven programming paradigm, where the system logic is constructed through data training. However, this approach poses challenges in terms of system analysis and defect detection. To address this issue, recent efforts have focused on testing deep learning systems using intuitive criteria known as Neuron Coverage (NC) and its variants. These criteria measure the activation proportion of neurons in a neural network. Unfortunately, recent DL applications have largely overlooked the importance of context during testing. To address this gap, this paper first incorporates the context of the DL pipeline deployed before test execution, such as medical diagnosis and Android Malware detection. Next, we formulate structural coverage criteria to guide test suite generation based on the properties of DL pipeline in different contexts. Furthermore, we proposed a coverage-guided search algorithm to efficiently generate test suites. Experimental results highlight the effectiveness of our approach in uncovering numerous erroneous behaviors in contexts such as medical image diagnosis and Android malware detection. This approach significantly enhances the robustness of DL models by considering the structural aspects of the DL pipeline. Copyright 2023 KICS.

A growing body of research indicates that employing large models for adaptation to downstream tasks often yields remarkable performance. However, in the domain of ship detection, the potential of these large models is frequently underutilized due to domain shift issues. This paper introduces the Cross-Modal Ship Grounding (CSG) model, which leverages an efficient Cross-Modal Adapter (CMA) technology to transfer the general detection capabilities of large models to ship images, addressing domain shift with minimal training costs. To mitigate the challenges posed by complex and variable background interference, the Water-Land Separation (WLS) module is proposed to focus specifically on the water area. This module effectively addresses the issue of background target interference, thereby enhancing the model’s accuracy in complex scenes. Empirical evaluations on both private and public datasets demonstrate that the CSG model surpasses all state-of-the-art models in performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Under PWM rectifier load, the power source based on virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is prone to cause mid-frequency oscillation. Firstly, the system oscillation mechanism and characteristic of the VSG-based power source are analyzed based on impedance method. Due to the negative resistance and capacitive characteristic in the middle frequency range, the PWM rectifier load is prone to interact with the VSG-based power source, which can lead to impedance resonance. Secondly, to improve the stability of the VSG-based power source under the PWM rectifier load, a voltage differentiation feedforward control is proposed. In addition, since the mid-frequency impedance magnitude decrease obviously, the improved VSG-based power source is closer to the ideal voltage source, which can automatically suppress the middle harmonics induced by uncontrollable rectifier load. Finally, the proposed control and the corresponding theoretical analysis are verified by simulations and experiments. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Recently, mega satellite constellations are very popular for global instant messaging, and inter-satellite links are planned for delay reduction, leading to satellite network architecture finally. Although there are many satellite orbit simulation tools (e.g. STK, Savi) and network simulation tool (e.g. NS2/3, OPNET, Mininet, SNS3), none of them gives good consideration to both. In this paper, a satellite network and orbit integrated simulation platform (Mini-Savi) is proposed for large scale satellite constellation, which is based on the combination of network simulation tool Mininet and orbit simulation tool Savi. Finally, a typical satellite constellation Iridium system is employed for simulation verification. © 2023 IEEE.

Attribute-based encryption provides fine-grained access control, ensuring data security in edge computing. However, existing access control schemes face issues such as high computational complexity due to bilinear pairing and key escrow with a single authority, which limit their effectiveness for lightweight terminal devices. To address these challenges, we propose a lightweight and key escrow-free access control scheme on encrypted data. This scheme replaces bilinear pairing with fast elliptic curve scalar multiplication, transferring most computational tasks to edge servers while preserving privacy, thus alleviating the computational burden on terminal devices. Additionally, we design a blockchain-based distributed key management method that allows multiple edge servers to distribute private keys collaboratively, resolving the key-escrow issue. Security analysis and performance evaluation demonstrate that our scheme effectively ensures data confidentiality, resists collusion attacks, and achieves high computational efficiency on the user side with low storage overheads, making it highly suitable for lightweight devices in edge computing. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep learning-based remaining useful life (RUL) prediction methods have demonstrated significant advantages due to their powerful feature representation capabilities. Although existing learning models have made progress in distinguishing between the time-varying and time-invariant characteristics of vibration signals, challenges remain in fully capturing these aspects, which can hinder their generalization performance. To address this issue, we propose a domain generalization method based on the extraction of time-varying and time-invariant features, tailored to the characteristics of bearing vibration time series signals. Firstly, Fourier transform and inverse Fourier transform are employed to isolate high-frequency features, obtaining both time-varying and time-invariant signals. The time-varying signals are then processed using an attention mechanism to extract time-varying features and learn the bearing degradation trend. Concurrently, the time-invariant signals are fed into an encoder-decoder structure to extract their invariant features. Finally, both sets of features are input into a Gate Recurrent Unit (GRU) module for RUL prediction. Experimental results across three tasks demonstrate that our model achieves excellent generalization capabilities. © 2024 IEEE.
