Drowsiness detection in real-time via convolutional neural networks and transfer learning

Drowsiness detection is a critical aspect of ensuring safety in various domains, including transportation, online learning, and multimedia consumption. This research paper presents a comprehensive investigation into drowsiness detection methods, with a specific focus on utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNN) and transfer learning. Notably, the proposed study extends beyond theoretical exploration to practical application, as we have developed a user-friendly mobile application incorporating these advanced techniques. Diverse datasets are integrated to systematically evaluate the implemented model, and the results showcase its remarkable effectiveness. For both multi-class and binary classification scenarios, our drowsiness detection system achieves impressive accuracy rates ranging from 90 to 99.86%. This research not only contributes to the academic understanding of drowsiness detection but also highlights the successful implementation of such methodologies in real-world scenarios through the development of our application. © The Author(s) 2024.

This review examines the methods, determinants, and forecasting horizons used in electricity demand forecasting in Türkiye. The study investigates how Türkiye's electricity demand is influenced by economic, climatic, socio-demographic, and technological factors, and explores the evolving landscape of forecasting techniques, from traditional statistical models to advanced machine learning and hybrid approaches. The research addresses three key questions: The significant determinants of electricity demand in Türkiye, the most effective forecasting methods, and the application of these insights to improve energy planning and policy development. Through a systematic analysis of peer-reviewed literature, official reports, and case studies, the study reveals the complex interplay of factors affecting electricity demand and the increasing sophistication of forecasting methodologies. Economic growth, industrial production, climate change, urbanization, and technological advancements emerge as primary drivers of demand, while artificial neural networks and hybrid models demonstrate superior forecasting capabilities. The study highlights the importance of integrated modeling approaches, sector-specific strategies, and the incorporation of climate projections in long-term planning. It also emphasizes the need for aligning energy policies with broader economic and environmental objectives. ELCD-NSC2: a novel early lung cancer detection and non-small cell classification framework

The survival rate of lung cancer relies significantly on how far the disease has spread when it is detected, how it reacts to the treatment, the patient’s overall health, and other factors. Therefore, the earlier the lung cancer diagnosis, the higher the survival rate. For radiologists, recognizing malignant lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) scans is a challenging and time-consuming process. As a result, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been suggested to alleviate these burdens. Deep-learning approaches have demonstrated remarkable results in recent years, surpassing traditional methods in different fields. Researchers are currently experimenting with several deep-learning strategies to increase the effectiveness of CAD systems in lung cancer detection with CT. This work proposes a deep-learning framework for detecting and diagnosing lung cancer. The proposed framework used recent deep-learning techniques in all its layers. The autoencoder technique structure is tuned and used in the preprocessing stage to denoise and reconstruct the medical lung cancer dataset. Besides, it depends on the transfer learning pre-trained models to make multi-classification among different lung cancer cases such as benign, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The proposed model provides high performance while recognizing and differentiating between two types of datasets, including biopsy and CT scans. The Cancer Imaging Archive and Kaggle datasets are utilized to train and test the proposed model. The empirical results show that the proposed framework performs well according to various performance metrics. According to accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC metrics, it achieves 99.60, 99.61, 99.62, 99.70, and 99.75%, respectively. Also, it depicts 0.0028, 0.0026, and 0.0507 in mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root mean square error metrics. Predicting the impact of no. of authors on no. of citations of research publications based on neural networks

Any work's citations are regarded as a key characteristic that leads to its appraisal and study. Citations are one of the most important indicators of a research publication's quality. Citations can have a favorable or bad impact on any piece of work or publication depending on a variety of circumstances, including author skill, publication venue, research topic, and so on. The goal of this study is to see how the number of co-authors affects the number of citations in research papers. There will be a correlation analysis between the number of co-authors and the number of citations for research articles, and we will observe how the number of co-authors affects the number of citations for publications. Citation data is gathered from databases such as DBLP, ACM, MAG (Microsoft Academic Graph), and others. There are 629,814 papers and 632,752 citations in the initial version. We use two methods to examine the impact of co-author count on the number of citations in a research paper: (i) Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC), and (ii) multiple regression (MR). To test the impact of co-author count on citation count of research publications, we calculate Pearson’s correlation coefficient (ra) between the two variables number of authors (NA) and citation count (CC). We also calculate Pearson’s correlation coefficient between the citation count (CC) and the most effective variables to compare between the impact of the number of authors and the impact of the other factors such as (i) rc between number of countries (NC) and citation count (CC). (ii) rv between venue category (VC) and citation count (CC). (iii) ry between Year_From (YF) and citation count (CC). Empirical evidence shows that co-authored publications achieve higher visibility and impact. High-dimensional and incomplete(HDI) matrices are primarily generated in all kinds of big-data-related practical applications. A latent factor analysis(LFA) model is capable of conducting efficient representation learning to an HDI matrix,whose hyper-parameter adaptation can be implemented through a particle swarm optimizer(PSO) to meet scalable ***, conventional PSO is limited by its premature issues,which leads to the accuracy loss of a resultant LFA model. To address this thorny issue, this study merges the information of each particle's state migration into its evolution process following the principle of a generalized momentum method for improving its search ability, thereby building a state-migration particle swarm optimizer(SPSO), whose theoretical convergence is rigorously proved in this study. It is then incorporated into an LFA model for implementing efficient hyper-parameter adaptation without accuracy loss. Experiments on six HDI matrices indicate that an SPSO-incorporated LFA model outperforms state-of-the-art LFA models in terms of prediction accuracy for missing data of an HDI matrix with competitive computational ***, SPSO's use ensures efficient and reliable hyper-parameter adaptation in an LFA model, thus ensuring practicality and accurate representation learning for HDI matrices.

As nations attempt to recover from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic, digital solutions facilitate economic change and put economies on the path to green growth. Therefore, identifying an individual based on biometric characteristics has rapidly become an urgent and essential subject. Banks, intelligence agencies, and high-profile institutions are frequently use handwritten signature verification to authenticate the identification of an individual. This paper introduces an innovative model (HSCM) for the authentication of online handwritten signatures based on the ConvMixer Network. The main idea of the proposed model is to divide the signature into several patches known as strokes, which are then processed using ConvMixer to generate signature features. These features are processed using Feed-Forward network. Experimental results on the real-world dataset show that the proposed model achieved 11.6% equal error rate (EER) compared with other competitors. Magnesium chips were coated with a high concentration of graphite using a binder and were used as the raw material for injection molding. The microstructure of the magnesium injection-molded product with added graphite exhibited a dispersion of needle-like graphite particles. No significant voids were observed at the interfaces between the graphite and the matrix. The addition of more than 0.5 mass% graphite decreased the proof stress and tensile strength of the injection-molded products. The Young’s modulus of the graphite-added products tended to decrease with an increase in the graphite content, which is consistent with the lower limit of the rule of mixtures. The thermal conductivity of the 6.9 mass% graphite-added product increased compared with that of the AZ91D magnesium alloy and the coefficient of linear thermal expansion decreased. Both values are within a range that satisfied the rules of mixtures. © 2024 The Japan Institute of Metals and Materials.

Delay-sensitive applications are becoming more and more in demand as a result of the development of information systems and the expansion of communication in cloud computing technologies. Some of these requests will be overlooked in cloud environments due to the communication delay between the processing center and the client’s request. The ‘fog-based computing paradigm’, a novel processing model, can be added to cloud computing to help with the aforementioned issues. The performance of computing systems is always influenced by latency. In this paper, we focus on balancing the load on the fog nodes to lower the latency. Optimizing crowd evacuation: evaluation of strategies for safety and efficiency

Predicting and controlling crowd dynamics in emergencies is one of the main objectives of simulated emergency exercises. However, during emergency exercises, there is often a lack of sense of danger by the actors involved and concerns about exposing real people to potentially dangerous environments. These problems impose limitations in running an emergency drill, harming the collection of valuable information for posterior analysis and decision-making. This work aims to mitigate these problems by using Agent Based Modelling (ABM) simulator to deepen the comprehension of human actions when exposed to a sudden variation in extensive crowded environmental conditions and how evacuation strategies affect evacuation performance. To assess the impact of the evacuation strategy employed, we propose a modified informed leader-flowing approach and compare it with common evacuation strategies in a simulated environment, replicating stadium benches with narrow corridors leading to different exit points. The objective is to determine the impact of each set of configurations and evacuation strategies and compare them against other established ones. Our experiments determined that agents following the crowd generally lead to a higher number of victims due to the rise of herding phenomena near the exits, which was significantly reduced when agents were guided towards the exit via knowing the exit beforehand or following leader agent with real-time information regarding exit location and exit current state, proving that relevant and controlled information in combination with Follow Leader strategies can be crucial in an emergency evacuation scenario with limited evacuation exit capabi and distribution. © The Author(s) 2024.
