Evolutionary dynamics are shaped by a variety of fundamental, generic drivers, including spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure. These drivers impact the trajectory of evolution, and have been hypothesized to influence phylogenetic structure. For instance, they can help explain natural history, steer behavior of contemporary evolving populations, and influence efficacy of application-oriented evolutionary optimization. Likewise, in inquiry-oriented artificial life systems, these drivers constitute key building blocks for open-ended evolution. Here, we set out to assess (1) if spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure leave detectable signatures in phylogenetic structure, (2) the extent, in particular, to which ecology can be detected and discerned in the presence of spatial structure, and (3) the extent to which these phylogenetic signatures generalize across evolutionary systems. To this end, we analyze phylogenies generated by manipulating spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure within three computational models of varied scope and sophistication. We find that selection pressure, spatial structure, and ecology have characteristic effects on phylogenetic metrics, although these effects are complex and not always intuitive. Signatures have some consistency across systems when using equivalent taxonomic unit definitions (e.g., individual, genotype, species). Further, we find that sufficiently strong ecology can be detected in the presence of spatial structure. We also find that, while low-resolution phylogenetic reconstructions can bias some phylogenetic metrics, high-resolution reconstructions recapitulate them faithfully. Although our results suggest potential for evolutionary inference of spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure through phylogenetic analysis, further methods development is needed to distinguish these drivers' phylometric signatures from each other and to appropriately normalize phylogenetic metrics. Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs) have emerged as a transformative force in the realm of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), demonstrating their versatility and efficacy across various applications. The ability to model complex data distributions and generate high-quality samples has made GDMs particularly effective in tasks such as image generation and reinforcement learning. Furthermore, their iterative nature, which involves a series of noise addition and denoising steps, is a powerful and unique approach to learning and generating data. This paper serves as a comprehensive tutorial on applying GDMs in network optimization tasks. We delve into the strengths of GDMs, emphasizing their wide applicability across various domains, such as vision, text, and audio generation. We detail how GDMs can be effectively harnessed to solve complex optimization problems inherent in networks. The paper first provides a basic background of GDMs and their applications in network optimization. This is followed by a series of case studies, showcasing the integration of GDMs with Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), incentive mechanism design, Semantic Communications (SemCom), Internet of Vehicles (IoV) networks, etc. These case studies underscore the practicality and efficacy of GDMs in real-world scenarios, offering insights into network design. We conclude with a discussion on potential future directions for GDM research and applications, providing major insights into how they can continue to shape the future of network optimization. © 2023, CC BY.

Attacks on web applications are constantly growing in both frequency and severity. Abundant data on the internet stimulates hackers to attempt different types of cyberattacks. Attack detection using conventional approaches and outdated data processing techniques has become outmoded as a result of this development. The purpose of this study is to investigate IoT attacks and discuss the efficient ML technique implementation strategies for restricting security risks. Among different security techniques, Machine learning (ML) systems demonstrated commendable feasibility in improving network and device security for the Internet of Things. The study with contextual research recognises and comprehends that modified “Support Vector Machine (SVM)” as well as “Random Forest (RF)” ML techniques showed optimal performance in IoT attack detection and prevention.

The production of biofuels to be used as bioenergy under combustion processes generates some gaseous emissions (CO, CO₂, NO_x, SO_x, and other pollutants), affecting living organisms and requiring careful assessments. However, obtaining such information experimentally for data evaluation is costly and time-consuming and its in situ obtaining for regional biomasses (e.g., those from Northeast Brazil (NEB) is still a major challenge. This paper reports on the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the prediction of the main air pollutants (CO, CO₂, NO, and SO₂) produced during the direct biomass combustion (N₂/O₂:80/20%) with the use of ultimate analysis (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen). 116 worldwide biomasses were used as input data, which is a relevant alternative to overcome the lack of experimental resources in NEB and obtain such information. Cross-validation was conducted with k-fold to optimize the ANNs and performance was analyzed with the use of statistical errors for accuracy assessments. The results showed an acceptable statistical performance for all architectures of ANNs, with 0.001–12.41% MAPE, 0.001–5.82 mg Nm⁻³ MAE, and 0.03–52.30 mg Nm⁻³ RMSE, highlighting the high precision of the emissions studied. On average, the differences between predicted and real values for CO, CO₂, NO, and SO₂ emissions from NEB biomasses were approximately 0.01%, 10⁻⁶%, 0.14%, and 0.05%, respectively. Pearson coefficient provided consistent results of concentration of the ultimate analysis in relation to the emissions studied and effectiveness of the test set in the developed models. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Analysis of high-power packages for white-light-emitting diode lamps with remote phosphor

An optimized packaging configuration for high-power white-light-emitting diode (LED) lamps that employs a diffuse reflector cup, a remote phosphor and a hemi-spherically-shaped encapsulation is presented. Ray tracing simulations for this configuration show that the phosphor efficiency can be enhanced by up to 50% over conventional packages. It is experimentally shown that dichromatic LED lamps with remote phosphor and diffuse reflector cup configuration have higher phosphor efficiency by 15.4% for blue-pumped yellow phosphor and by 27% for ultraviolet-pumped blue phosphor over conventional packages. Those improvements are attributed to reduced absorption of the phosphorescence by the LED chip and the reduction of deterministic optical modes trapped inside the encapsulant.

This works presents an innovative application of Markov Decision Process (MDP) to a medium-term mining logistics planning problem considering the mine-to-client supply chain. We implemented three distinct algorithms based on state-of-the-art approaches to solve large-scale problems, and compared their results. Furthermore, we combined all three variants in a single novel algorithm that attained fast convergence and may be an alternative to circumvent the curse of dimensionality underlying large scale problems. © 2020 EUCA.

In this paper, an approach to aid in introductory programming courses is presented, focused on students that had never had any contact with computer programming. The approach, that was introduced in a previous paper [3], presents programming concepts using icons and “flowcharts”, and a 3D robotics simulator (CoppeliaSim), that has free educational use. This time, a real version of the simulated robot, built using Arduino and cheap, easily obtainable electronic components, is also presented. The programs to control the robot are developed by graphically constructing flowcharts on the visual editor, and then following the execution of programs using the simulated (or real) robot, step by step. This graphic program editor is named “FluxProg”, and its 2nd version is now available online, with new features comprising variables, arithmetic and logic expressions, thus providing a complete programming environment.

With the increase of the search for computational models where the expression of parallelism occurs naturally, some paradigms arise as options for the current generation of computers. In this context, dynamic dataflow and Gamma—General Abstract Model for Multiset mAnipulation—emerge as interesting computational model choices. In dynamic dataflow model, operations are performed as soon as their associated operands are available, without rely on a program Counter to dictate the execution order of instructions. The Gamma paradigm is based on a parallel multiset rewriting scheme. It provides a nondeterministic execution model inspired by an abstract chemical machinemetaphor, where operations are formulated as reactions that occur freely among matching elements belonging to the multiset. In this work, equivalence relations between the dynamic dataflow and Gamma paradigms are exposed and explored, while methods to convert from dataflow to Gamma paradigm and vice versa are provided. It is shown that vertices and edges of a dynamic dataflow graph can correspond, respectively, to reactions and multiset elements in the Gamma paradigm. This work provides the scientific community with the possibility of taking profit of both parallel programming models, contributing with a versatility component to researchers and developers. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Structured Downsampling for Fast, Memory-efficient Curation of Online Data Streams

Operations over data streams typically hinge on efficient mechanisms to aggregate or summarize history on a rolling basis. For high-volume data steams, it is critical to manage state in a manner that is fast and memory efficient - particularly in resource-constrained or real-time contexts. Here, we address the problem of extracting a fixed-capacity, rolling subsample from a data stream. Specifically, we explore "data stream curation" strategies to fulfill requirements on the composition of sample time points retained. Our "DStream" suite of algorithms targets three temporal coverage criteria: (1) steady coverage, where retained samples should spread evenly across elapsed data stream history;(2) stretched coverage, where early data items should be proportionally favored;and (3) tilted coverage, where recent data items should be proportionally favored. For each algorithm, we prove worst-case bounds on rolling coverage quality. In contrast to previous work by Moreno, Rodriguez Papa, and Dolson (2024), which dynamically scales memory use to guarantee a specified level of coverage quality, here we focus on the more practical, application-driven case of maximizing coverage quality given a fixed memory capacity. As a core simplifying assumption, we restrict algorithm design to a single update operation: writing from the data stream to a calculated buffer site - with data never being read back, no metadata stored (e.g., sample timestamps), and data eviction occurring only implicitly via overwrite. Drawing only on primitive, low-level operations and ensuring full, overhead-free use of available memory, this "DStream" framework ideally suits domains that are resource-constrained (e.g., embedded systems), performance-critical (e.g., real-time), and fine-grained (e.g., individual data items as small as single bits or bytes).
