With the augmentation of traffic exponentially, we observe that traffic congestion does not guarantee road safety or enhance the driving experience. In the recent past, Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV), a social network paradigm permits social relationships among every vehicle in the network or with any road infrastructure to render a radically useful environment. SIoV is beneficial for the drivers, in improving road safety, avoiding mishaps, and providing a friendly-driving experience. In this paper, we propose a traffic scheduling algorithm to gain the maximum throughput for the flow of vehicles at a road intersection with the formation of social relationships among the vehicles and with the Road Side Units (RSUs). The algorithm estimates the flow rate of vehicles for lanes at the intersections exploiting the volume of traffic moving through the given road. A condition matrix is designed for the consistent movement of traffic considering different routes on the road segments. Social relationships are devised on various aspects of travel needs for a safe, agile, and better driving experience. Simulation results illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme with high traffic throughput, service rate and reduce the total travelling time, delay time, and average waiting time in comparison with Dynamic Throughput Maximization Framework and Adaptive Traffic Control Algorithm. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Theoretically, domain adaptation is a well-researched problem. Further, this theory has been well-used in practice. In particular, we note the bound on target error given by Ben-David et al. (2010) and the well-known domain-aligning algorithm based on this work using Domain Adversarial Neural Networks (DANN) presented by Ganin and Lempitsky (2015). Recently, multiple variants of DANN have been proposed for the related problem of domain generalization, but without much discussion of the original motivating bound. In this paper, we investigate the validity of DANN in domain generalization from this perspective. We investigate conditions under which application of DANN makes sense and further consider DANN as a dynamic process during training. Our investigation suggests that the application of DANN to domain generalization may not be as straightforward as it seems. To address this, we design an algorithmic extension to DANN in the domain generalization case. Our experimentation validates both theory and algorithm. © 2021, CC BY.

Drum-aware ensemble architecture for improved joint musical beat and downbeat tracking

This paper presents a novel system architecture that integrates blind source separation with joint beat and downbeat tracking in musical audio signals. The source separation module segregates the percussive and non-percussive components of the input signal, over which beat and downbeat tracking are performed separately and then the results are aggregated with a learnable fusion mechanism. This way, the system can adaptively determine how much the tracking result for an input signal should depend on the input's percussive or non-percussive components. Evaluation on four testing sets that feature different levels of presence of drum sounds shows that the new architecture consistently outperforms the widely-adopted baseline architecture that does not employ source separation. A dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) system for breast cancer detection using contrast enhanced digital mammograms

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are gold-standard techniques for breast cancer detection. The newly contrast-enhanced digital mammography (CEDM) integrates the complementary strengths of FFDM and MRI, and is being incorporated into the practice of leading institutions. The current clinical practice using CEDM is sub-optimal because it is primarily based on clinicians' trained eyes. Automated diagnostic systems under the conventional machine learning paradigm suffer from drawbacks, such as the requirement for precise segmentation, extraction of shallow features that do not suffice for diagnostic images, and adoption of a sequential design without a global objective. We propose a deep learning (DL)-empowered diagnostic system using CEDM, the core of which is a novel dual-mode deep transfer learning (D2TL) model. The proposed system is innovative in several aspects, including (1) a dual-mode deep architecture design;(2) use of transfer learning to facilitate robust model estimation under small sample-size;(3) development of visualization techniques to help interpret the model results and facilitate inter- and intra-tumor malignancy quantification;and (4) minimization of human bias. We apply D2TL to classify benign vs. malignant tumors using the CEDM data collected from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. D2TL outperforms competing models and approaches. © 2019, © 2019 “IISE”.

Universality of Winning Tickets: A Renormalization Group Perspective

Foundational work on the Lottery Ticket Hypothesis has suggested an exciting corollary: winning tickets found in the context of one task can be transferred to similar tasks, possibly even across different architectures. This has generated broad interest, but methods to study this universality are lacking. We make use of renormalization group theory, a powerful tool from theoretical physics, to address this need. We find that iterative magnitude pruning, the principal algorithm used for discovering winning tickets, is a renormalization group scheme, and can be viewed as inducing a flow in parameter space. We demonstrate that ResNet-50 models with transferable winning tickets have flows with common properties, as would be expected from the theory. Similar observations are made for BERT models, with evidence that their flows are near fixed points. Additionally, we leverage our framework to study winning tickets transferred across ResNet architectures, observing that smaller models have flows with more uniform properties than larger models, complicating transfer between them. © 2021, CC BY.

DeepDTAGen: a multitask deep learning framework for drug-target affinity prediction and target-aware drugs generation

Identifying novel drugs that can interact with target proteins is a highly challenging, time-consuming, and costly task in drug discovery and development. Numerous machine learning-based models have recently been utilized to accelerate the drug discovery process. However, these existing methods are primarily uni-tasking, either designed to predict drug-target interaction (DTI) or generate new drugs. Through the lens of pharmacological research, these tasks are intrinsically interconnected and play a critical role in effective drug development. Therefore, the learning models must be utilized in such a manner to learn the structural properties of drug molecules, the conformational dynamics of proteins, and the bioactivity between drugs and targets. To this end, this paper develops a novel multitask learning framework that can predict drug-target binding affinities and simultaneously generate new target-aware drug variants, using common features for both tasks. In addition, we developed the FetterGrad algorithm to address the optimization challenges associated with multitask learning particularly those caused by gradient conflicts between distinct tasks. Comprehensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed model provides an effective mechanism for predicting drug-target binding affinities and generating novel drugs, thus greatly facilitating the drug discovery process. © The Author(s) 2025.

In response to the Cybersecurity Law, organizations face numerous management and technical requirements. Detection techniques such as vulnerability scanning and penetration testing are employed to identify risks. Addressing these vulnerabilities demands substantial manpower, time, and financial resources. Security concerns also arise during digital file transmission and remediation efforts. This study proposes a security detection platform with step-by-step implementation guidelines, enabling resource-limited units to replicate the setup and address security gaps. It compares detection results between open-source and commercial tools, highlighting key differences and offering remediation strategies. Numerous digital files (e.g., test reports) are generated during testing. To ensure secure storage and sharing, the system integrates IOTA’s distributed ledger and IPFS, generating HASH values and uploading files on-chain to preserve integrity and authenticity. The objective is to deliver a scalable, cost-effective security detection framework that enhances system resilience while minimizing resource consumption. © 2025 by the authors.

An efficient multi-objective evolutionary approach for solving the operation of multi-reservoir system scheduling in hydro-power plants

This paper tackles the short-term hydro-power unit commitment problem in a multi-reservoir system - a cascade-based operation scenario. For this, we propose a new mathematical modelling in which the goal is to maximize the total energy production of the hydro-power plant in a sub-daily operation, and, simultaneously, to maximize the total water content (volume) of reservoirs. For solving the problem, we discuss the Multi-objective Evolutionary Swarm Hybridization (MESH) algorithm, a recently proposed multiobjective swarm intelligence-based optimization method which has obtained very competitive results when compared to existing evolutionary algorithms in specific applications. The MESH approach has been applied to find the optimal water discharge and the power produced at the maximum reservoir volume for all possible combinations of turbines in a hydro-power plant. The performance of MESH has been compared with that of well-known evolutionary approaches such as NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, and MOEA/D in a realistic problem considering data from a hydro-power energy system with two cascaded hydro-power plants in Brazil. Results indicate that MESH showed a superior performance than alternative multi-objective approaches in terms of efficiency and accuracy, providing a profit of $412,500 per month in a projection analysis carried out. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Excitons, bound electron-hole pairs, in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Organic Inorganic Perovskites (2D HOIPs) are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons (E-Ps) when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical cavity. In the case of 2D HOIPs, they can self-hybridize into E-Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the excitons. However, the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E-Ps in 2D HOIPs, including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces, remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that > 0.5 µm thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E-P modes. These E-Ps have high Q factors (> 100) and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and emission. Through varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements, we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy upper E-Ps to lower energy, lower E-Ps. Finally, we also demonstrate that E-Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at interfaces. Our findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E-Ps opening new opportunities towards their manipulation for polaritonic devices. © 2023, CC BY.
