In this article, we propose an updated version of our previously developed model for predicting drug-side effect associations, applied to two case studies: long QT syndrome and asthma. The classifier accepts the name of a specific drug side effect as input and outputs a list of drugs potentially associated with this side effect. By simulating how drug effects propagate within the interactome using the Random Walk with Restart algorithm, the classifier identifies genes potentially associated with the onset of the side effect. Based on the rationale that the more a drug perturbs these genes, the more likely it is to cause the side effect, the model identifies drugs potentially linked to the onset of the side effect. Moreover, the model enables the categorization of drugs into chemical subclasses using the ClassyFire schema, facilitating the analysis of complex side effects, such as asthma, through more specific mechanisms. The results show that the model identifies both drugs known to be associated with certain side effects, as well as drugs not officially reported by the FDA, demonstrating its generalizability and practical relevance. This method is also adaptable for analyzing other side effects. © 2024 IEEE.

Anomaly detection from medical images is badly needed for automated diagnosis. For example, medical images obtained with several modalities, such as magnetic resonance (MR) and confocal microscopy, need to be classified for anomaly detection. The MR images may contain tumors that need to be detected with anomaly detection techniques. In MR imaging, brain tumors are represented as areas composed of abnormal cells that need to be detected. On the other hand, confocal microscopy can be used for retinal imaging. Hence, there is a need to apply classification techniques for diagnosing diseases of the eye, such as Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), which leads to exudates in different regions of the retina. The detection of exudates is necessary for the diagnosis of DR. In this paper, two models are presented for the classification of MR and retinal images. Much research has been done in this area, but it did not achieve high accuracy of classification in an acceptable time. In addition, the previous models did not consider both types of image modalities considered in this paper. The suggested models are Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (Conv-LSTM). They are used to classify normal and abnormal cases of both brain tumor and DR diseases. The CNN model is composed of six convolutional layers and six max-pooling layers. A soft-max activation function takes the classification decision. The proposed Conv-LSTM model is composed of three stages: pre-processing, feature extraction, and classification. The deep learning model performance is better than those of traditional networks. The CNN gives an accuracy of 94.26% for DR classification and 95.8% for brain tumor classification, while the Conv-LSTM gives the maximum accuracy of 96.41% for DR classification and 97.4% for brain tumor classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

The widespread availability of internet access and handheld devices confers to social media a power similar to the one newspapers used to have. People seek affordable information on social media and can reach it within seconds. Yet this convenience comes with dangers;any user may freely post whatever they please and the content can stay online for a long period, regardless of its truthfulness. A need arises to detect untruthful information, also known as fake news. In this paper, we present an end-to-end solution that accurately detects fake news and immunizes network nodes that spread them in real-time. To detect fake news, we propose two new stack deep learning architectures that utilize convolutional and bidirectional LSTM layers. To mitigate the spread of fake news, we propose a real-time network-aware strategy that (1) constructs a minimum-cost weighted directed spanning tree for a detected node, and (2) immunizes nodes in that tree by scoring their harmfulness using a novel ranking function. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution on five real-world datasets. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

During the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the topic of using natural or synthetic esters as an alternative to mineral oils in oil transformers due to the easier way to obtain them and their ability to exhibit better electrical properties. In addition, more and more researchers are describing in their work that doping esters with nanoparticles is capable of further improving these properties. Therefore, in the current work, it was decided to see what effect the addition of a hydrophobic carbon shell iron nanoparticle to ORLEN mineral oil and Midel 7131 synthetic ester would have on selected electrical parameters of the insulating fluid, i.e. breakdown voltage and electrical strength.

Learning Probabilistic Coordinate Fields for Robust Correspondences

We introduce Probabilistic Coordinate Fields (PCFs), a novel geometric-invariant coordinate representation for image correspondence problems. In contrast to standard Cartesian coordinates, PCFs encode coordinates in correspondence-specific barycentric coordinate systems (BCS) with affine invariance. To know when and where to trust the encoded coordinates, we implement PCFs in a probabilistic network termed PCF-Net, which parameterizes the distribution of coordinate fields as Gaussian mixture models. By jointly optimizing coordinate fields and their confidence conditioned on dense flows, PCF-Net can work with various feature descriptors when quantifying the reliability of PCFs by confidence maps. An interesting observation of this work is that the learned confidence map converges to geometrically coherent and semantically consistent regions, which facilitates robust coordinate representation. By delivering the confident coordinates to keypoint/feature descriptors, we show that PCF-Net can be used as a plug-in to existing correspondence-dependent approaches. Extensive experiments on both indoor and outdoor datasets suggest that accurate geometric invariant coordinates help to achieve the state of the art in several correspondence problems, such as sparse feature matching, dense image registration, camera pose estimation, and consistency filtering. Further, the interpretable confidence map predicted by PCF-Net can also be leveraged to other novel applications from texture transfer to multi-homography classification. © 1979-2012 IEEE.

An important aspect related to the effects of agricultural activities on the environment is represented by the nutrient loss in water and air (specifically nitrogen). The interactions between catchments hydrological processes, management of farm activities, climate changes and nitrogen losses constitute a complex phenomenon yet not well understood, being an important concern from the sustainable agriculture perspective. Nitrogen can be lost with water as leaching or runoff, or as gas as ammonia volatilization. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is particularly problematic because it is also a powerful greenhouse gas. The goal of the current article is to present innovative digital techniques to advance in understanding of this phenomena through an Information System that integrates Artificial Intelligence techniques such as Semantic Technologies and Machine Learning (ML) into Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) to support smart farming and sustainable agriculture.

Quality assessment of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals holds significant importance in reducing the high-frequency false alarms in automated arrhythmia diagnosis. Existing quality assessment methods primarily rely on empirical threshold setting or the calculation of relevant statistical values to formulate decision rules. However, the thresholds set in this manner are typically based on experience and knowledge, resulting in decision rules that lack flexibility and struggle to adapt to changes in the dataset. To address this issue, many researchers have turned to deep learning algorithms for ECG signal quality assessment. Nevertheless, most existing deep learning methods usually require large-scale and labeled ECG data for training, whose acquiring is typically challenging. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient method for ECG signal quality assessment. First, we use a contrast learning framework to construct sample pairs through multilevel data augmentation. Second, a densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet) is used to improve the model's ability of extracting local features in ECG signals, and a Squeeze-and-Excitation attention module is introduced to make the model pay more attention to critical features. Finally, the feature representation is learned by minimizing the contextual contrast loss to bring similar samples closer and push dissimilar samples farther away. In this way, we can utilize the contrastive learning framework to extract temporal representations from unlabeled data and transfer them to downstream ECG signal quality assessment tasks. Extensive experiments on the Physionet/CinC Challenge 2011 dataset demonstrate that our approach outperforms most existing quality assessment methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Pedestrian trajectory prediction plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of various applications, including autonomous vehicles and traffic management systems. This paper proposes a novel method for pedestrian trajectory prediction, called multi-stage goal-driven network (MGNet). Diverging from prior approaches relying on stepwise recursive prediction and the singular forecasting of a long-term goal, MGNet directs trajectory generation by forecasting intermediate stage goals, thereby reducing prediction errors. The network comprises three main components: a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE), an attention module, and a multi-stage goal evaluator. Trajectories are encoded using conditional variational autoencoders to acquire knowledge about the approximate distribution of pedestrians' future trajectories, and combined with an attention mechanism to capture the temporal dependency between trajectory sequences. The pivotal module is the multi-stage goal evaluator, which utilizes the encoded feature vectors to predict intermediate goals, effectively minimizing cumulative errors in the recursive inference process. The effectiveness of MGNet is demonstrated through comprehensive experiments on the JAAD and PIE datasets. Comparative evaluations against state-of-the-art algorithms reveal significant performance improvements achieved by our proposed method. © 2024 IEEE.

In realistic distributed optimization scenarios, individual nodes possess only partial information and communicate over bandwidth constrained channels. For this reason, the development of efficient distributed algorithms is essential. In our paper we addresses the challenge of unconstrained distributed optimization. In our scenario each node's local function exhibits strong convexity with Lipschitz continuous gradients. The exchange of information between nodes occurs through 3-bit bandwidth-limited channels (i.e., nodes exchange messages represented by a only 3 -bits). Our proposed algorithm respects the network's bandwidth constraints by leveraging zoom-in and zoom-out operations to adjust quantizer parameters dynamically. We show that during our algorithm's operation nodes are able to converge to the exact optimal solution. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm achieves a linear convergence rate to the optimal solution. We conclude the paper with simulations that highlight our algorithm's unique characteristics. © 2024 IEEE.

The analog electronic computers are a type of circuitry used to calculate specific problems using the physical relationships between the voltages and currents following classical laws of physics. One specific class of these circuits are computers based on the interactions between passive circuit elements. Models presented by Gabriel Kron in 1945 are the example of using such passive elements to construct a solver for the problem of free quantum particles confined by rectangular potential. Numerical validation of Kron's second model is conducted for different shapes of particle confining potential. Kron's model is generalized by introduction of non-linear resistive elements what implies deformation of Schroedinger equation solution into Ginzburg-Landau form. © 2023, CC BY.
