In this work, implementation issues related to multivariable Generalized Predictive control (GPC) for processes with multiple time delays are analyzed. Due to specific properties of those processes, the resulting control system has to account for the existing delays between control variables changes and their effect on controlled outputs. In the case of Model Predictive control (MPC) techniques, such as GPC, the dead-time issue can be captured in the process model and thus considered in the predictive mechanism of the controller. However, this working principle results in augmented matrix dimensions that considers input-output time delays as additional zero entries. This fact increases the computational load and has to be accounted for in the control system design, specially in systems where computing resources are scarce (eg. embedded systems). The reduction of the matrix dimension, and hence the computation required, depends on how the delay terms are structured. The presented analysis considers two different GPC implementations for multivariable dead-time processes, which are used to compensate for internal matrix dimensions for the multiple time delays. Each implementation mode is evaluated for two industrial multivariable processes, providing several performance indexes. Performed simulations show that the required computational load can be reduced when adequate implementation mode is selected.

SU（1,1） dynamical symmetry is of fundamental importance in analyzing unbounded quantum systems in theoretical and applied physics. In this paper, we study the control of generalized coherent states associated with quantum systems with SU（1,1） dynamical symmetry. Based on a pseudo Riemannian metric on the SU（1,1） group, we obtain necessary conditions for minimizing the field fluence of controls that steer the system to the desired final state. Further analyses show that the candidate optimal control solutions can be classified into normal and abnormal extremals. The abnormal extremals can only be constant functions when the control Hamiltonian is non-parabolic, while the normal extremals can be expressed by Weierstrass elliptic functions according to the parabolicity of the control Hamiltonian. As a special case, the optimal control solution that maximally squeezes a generalized coherent state is a sinusoidal field, which is consistent with what is used in the laboratory.

Distribution systems are evolving towards fault self-healing systems which can quickly identify and isolate faulted components and restore supply to the affected customers with little human intervention. A self-healing mechanism can considerably reduce the outage times and improve the continuity of supply; however, such an improvement requires a fast fault location method and also a communication and measurement infrastructure. In this paper the feasibility of fast service restoration through a fast fault location method is studied. A fast fault location method is proposed which is applicable to any distribution network with laterals, load taps and heterogeneous lines. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by simulation tests on a real 13.8 kV, 134-node distribution system under different fault conditions. The results verify the applicability of the proposed architecture. We show that the communication delay plays a less important role in overall restoration time, and we stress the contribution of a fast fault location method in keeping the overall interruption time less than 1 minute.

In this paper, we propose a novel relay selection policy based on the Hybrid Relay Selection (HRS) relay selection protocol that takes into account the state of the buffers and aims at reducing the average packet delays in the network. The proposed protocol, called the Delay-Aware HRS (DA - HRS) protocol is analyzed by means of Markov Chains and expressions for the outage probability, throughput and delay are derived. The distributed implementation of the protocol is also discussed. The performance of our proposed protocol is demonstrated via extensive simulations and comparisons with the classical HRS.

The paper deals with the methodology of creation of sequential control system programs in the language of function block diagrams (FBD). After analyzing basic blocks of the sequential functions chart (SFC) language, the form of state block and implementation of branching or connecting paths of sequences are formulated using the FBD language. It is a simplification of the application of the SFC language. Our method of creating the sequential system ensures a compact form of the final program and is particularly useful for small PLC controllers. The method is illustrated by example of the simple sequential control system.

In this paper, a comparative study of speed control efficiencies based on two dynamical models is presented. The common structure of dynamical models is developed using first principles of physics. The complex thrust mechanism is studied using two different techniques. First, we apply a novel data-driven approach to build up the non-linear mapping between tail angular motion and thrust generated, which is essential to specify the input gradient. Further, additional experiments are designed to acquire data necessary for modelling the input delay factor causing a time-delayed input to drive the system output. Second, analytically developed Lighthill's slender body theory is also employed to study thrust mechanism for comparative purposes. Though the theory has been used in robotic fish motion studies, it was originally formulated as an analytical tool for studying biological fish motion. Comparing the two theories help understand the predominant features in a robotic fish speed control. Lastly, because of the highly non-linear system dynamics, robust discrete-time Sliding Mode controllers (SMC) are developed with the two dynamical models as basis respectively. Experimental verifications confirm that SMC based on data-driven model performs superior to the SMC based on the Lighthill's theory, by efficiently controlling the robotic fish's speed to track the time-varying reference speeds.

High penetration of variable and non-programmable distributed generation has brought new challenges to the power system operation and is highlighting the need of a smarter grid. One of the key requirements in this regard is developing and deploying smart metering systems in distribution networks. In this paper we present the actual situation in the Italian distribution networks and we discuss the opportunities and challenges of applying new metering systems and introducing a flexible, multi-utility, multi-service metering architecture. Some off-the-shelf or prototype smart meters, selected to be tested in an ongoing European project, named FLEXMETER, are presented.

For 2D systems computational stability tests are a requirement for applications. Tests in the frequency domain exist, but unlike those for the standard linear systems case, these can be computationally intensive and/or fail to provide a basis for the formulation and solution of, for example, the stabilization problem. This paper investigates the problem of asymptotic stability for 2D systems described by the Roesser state-space model. Both discrete and hybrid (continuous-discrete) systems are considered and the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma, a central result in systems theory, is used to develop less conservative stability conditions in terms of a convex optimization problem over linear matrix inequalities. Illustrative examples are given to show the effectiveness of the new results.

Resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in clinically high-risk individuals (CHR), clinically stable first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), healthy controls (HC) suggest alterations in neural oscillatory activity. However, few studies directly compare these anomalies among each types. Therefore, this study investigated whether these electrophysiological characteristics differentiate clinical populations from one another, and from non-psychiatric controls. To address this question, resting EEG power and coherence were assessed in 40 clinically high-risk individuals (CHR), 40 first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), and 40 healthy controls (HC). These findings suggest that resting EEG can be a sensitive measure for differentiating between clinical *** paper proposes a novel data-driven supervised learning method to obtain identification of the patients mental status in schizophrenia research. According to Marchenko-Pastur Law, the distribution of the eigenvalues of EEG data is divided into signal subspace and noise subspace. A test statistic named LES that embodies the characteristics of all eigenvalues is adopted. different classifier and different feature(LES test function) are selected for experiments, we have shown that using von Neumann Entropy as LES test function combine with SVM classifier could obtain the best average classification accuracy during three classification among HC, FES and CHR of Schizophrenia group with EEG signal. It is worth noting that the result of LES feature extraction with the highest classification accuracy is around 90% in two classification(HC compare with FES) and around 70% in three classification. Where the classification accuracy higher than 70% could be used to assist clinical diagnosis. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Wind energy is one of the widely applied renewable energies in the world. Wind turbine as the main wind energy converter at present has very complex technical system containing a huge number of components,actuators and sensors. However, despite of the hardware redundancy, sensor faults have often affected the wind turbine normal operation and thus caused energy generation loss. In this paper, aiming at the wind turbine hydraulic pitch system, data-driven design of process monitoring(PM) and diagnosis has been realized in the wind turbine benchmark. Fault tolerant control(FTC) strategies focused on sensor faults have also been presented here, where with the implementation of soft sensor the sensor fault can be handled and the performance of the system is improved. The performance of this method is demonstrated with the wind turbine benchmark provided by Math Works.
