A novel approach to the SLAM problem has been tested in an industrial environment within a robotic assistance context. In order to be fully reliable in non-modelled circumstances where the environment cannot be considered as known a priori, a robot assistant must be able to localize and map its environment. The use of a camera sensor to solve localization has several advantages and weaknesses due the nature of the only-bearing data. But as the robot is expected to assist the human agent, this agent can deploy additional sensors and provide the robot with data to help solve the SLAM problem. Thus, another camera worn by the human agent is used to produce non-continuous stereo data with the robotic camera, to speed-up and add robustness to several parts of the monocular SLAM process considered. The approach has been tested with real experiments focused on singular trajectories and other issues found on industrial environments.

This paper presents analysis and control of D converter, which has continuous input and output current to obtain maximum power transfer from a photovoltaic (PV) system. Examining the maximum power involves optimization and control techniques that ensure maximum power extraction enhancement. Traditional converters have rather high input ripple current that originates considerable loss of power extraction when linked to photovoltaic panels. Operating with zero input ripple current enlarges the power obtained from the PV panel without employing electrolytic capacitor. Experiment and simulation of the converter performance support and extol the system concept and establish a balanced view among several types of used controllers as well.

The aim of this article is to develop optical aberration correcting methods using adaptive optics for co focal microscopy in imaging systems. In order to compensate the aberrations, a dynamic element, consisting of a deformable mirror, was used. The correction is performed by controlling the surface of the deformable mirror, in order to improve the overall system image resolution. Moreover, the wave front sensor less system case was considered. By combining the automaticcontrol algorithms with the physics laws, quite accurate estimations can be obtained, while testing several different scenarios.

Verifying if a process controller achieves a desired goal regarding safety specifications or performance is an important task in practice. This work presents a method for controller verification and parametrization of uncertain polynomial discrete-time systems with closed-loop requirements. Apart from quantitative constraints, also qualitative requirements, which are not directly linked to a specific time or amplitude, are considered. For formalizing these constraints, we employ linear temporal logic formulas and polynomial inequalities. Uncertainties can be considered in the input, the output, the initial conditions and the model parameters to account e.g. for model plant mismatch and noise, described as unknown-but-bounded variables. We combine the requirements and the system dynamics into a nonlinear feasibility problem to verify the controller and determine admissible controller parametrization. This problem is solved by relaxing it to a mixed-integer linear program. The relaxation procedure guarantees that the derived set of possible parametrization fulfill the quantitative and qualitative requirements of the closed-loop behavior despite the present uncertainties. The proposed method is illustrated by verifying and parametrizing a controller for a two tank system.

We propose and test on real data a two-tier estimation strategy for inferring occupancy levels from measurements of CO_2 concentration and temperature levels. The first tier is a blind identification step, based either on a frequentist Maximum Likelihood method, implemented using non-linear optimization, or on a Bayesian marginal likelihood method, implemented using a dedicated Expectation-Maximization algorithm. The second tier resolves the ambiguity of the unknown multiplicative factor, and returns the final estimate of the occupancy levels. The overall procedure addresses some practical issues of existing occupancy estimation strategies. More specifically, first it does not require the installation of special hardware, since it uses measurements that are typically available in many buildings. Second, it does not require apriori knowledge on the physical parameters of the building, since it performs system identification steps. Third, it does not require pilot data containing measured real occupancy patterns (i.e., physically counting people for some periods, a typically expensive and time consuming step), since the identification steps are blind.

The variety of aspects preserved by these scaled-down environments allow different approaches to be taken in research and education. The paper compares two facilities, at TU Wien and at MTA SZTAKI in Budapest, respectively, and highlights differences in their modes of operation, the resulting variations of course-based vs. project-based didactic approaches, as well as their place in technical higher education.
