To engineer the factory of the future the paper argues for a reference model that is not necessary restricted to the control component, but integrates the physical and human components as well. This is due to the real need to accommodate the latest achievements in factory automation where the human is not merely playing a simple and clear role inside the control-loop, but is becoming a composite factor in a highly automated system (“man in the mesh”). The concept is demonstrated by instantiating the anthropocentric cyber-physical reference architecture for smart factories (ACPA4SF) in a concrete case study that needs to accommodate the ongoing researches from the SmartFactory KL facility (e.g. augmented reality, mobile interaction technology, virtual training of human operators).

The paper proposes an approach to estimate the eye openness degree and 6DOF head pose with RGBD camera. A novel face localization method based on combination of 3D points cloud and RGB texture is proposed, which is robust against the interferences from background and foreground. The eye openness degree is estimated by a statistical model based on Mahalanobis distance, which is reliable even with glasses. The experiment results under different head poses are presented to evaluate the system's performance.

Motivated by the fact that bounded variation (often discontinuous) functions frequently appear when studying integral equations that describe physical phenomena, we focus on the existence of bounded variation solutions for Urysohn integral measure driven equations. Due to numerous applications of Urysohn integral equations in various domains, problems of this kind have been extensively studied in literature, under more restrictive assumptions. Our approach concerns the framework of Kurzweil-Stieltjes integration, which allows the occurrence of high oscillatory features on the right hand side of the equation. A discussion about interesting consequences of our main result (given by particular cases of the measure driving the equation) is presented. Finally, we show the generality of our results by investigating two examples of impulsive type problems (from both theoretical and numerical perspective) and giving an application in electronics industry concerning polarization properties of ferroelectric materials.

The problem of elimination of impulsive disturbances from archive audio signals is considered and its new solution, called predictive matched filtering, is proposed. The new approach is based on the observation that a large percentage of noise pulses corrupting archive audio recordings have highly repetitive shapes that match several typical "patterns", called click templates. To localize noise pulses, click templates can be correlated with the sequence of multi-step-ahead prediction errors yielded by the model-based signal predictor. It is shown that predictive matched filtering is an efficient and computationally affordable disturbance localization technique - when combined with the classical detection method based on autoregressive modeling, it can significantly improve restoration results.

Performance of constrained movements in multiple directions of a workspace simultaneously and in presence of uncertainty is a great challenge for robots. Achieving such tasks by employing control policies which are fully determined a priori and do not take into account the system uncertainty can cause undesired stress on the robot end-effector or the environment and result in poor performance. Instead, a sophisticated control policy is required, which can adjust to the varying conditions of a task while taking into account the coupling of motion dynamics between different directions of movement. To this aim, in this paper, we propose a MIMO Extremum Seeking control (ESC)-Model Reference Adaptive control (MRAC) approach with the view of executing fine motion tasks in presence of uncertain task dynamics. ESC enhances robustness of the system to non-parametric uncertainties compared to single MRAC. The proposed approach ensures state tracking as well as optimization of a global state-dependent cost criterion in all directions of movement. We evaluate our approach in simulations and in a real-world robotic engraving task.

Background suppression has found several application areas in computer vision. Among others, abandoned object detection and moving object detection under dynamic backgrounds are two major application areas. Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is one of the most popular methods and has been applied in both of these application areas. However, the aforementioned areas present contradicting challenges for GMM. Abandoned objects need the GMM to slowly get adapted to prevent accidental assimilation of the foreground, while dynamic backgrounds need quick assimilation to prevent noisy detection. A novel dual GMM based on pixel history is proposed to provide practical solutions to both of these contradictory challenges. The method uses separate GMMs to represent foreground and background modes. A foreground mode is transferred to the GMM representing the background based on its history of occurrence. Thus, a quick assimilation is offered to dynamic backgrounds while abandoned objects face a very slow assimilation. In each case, old background is preserved. Extensive experiments are done to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and to compare it with a number of well known methods in literature.

This paper presents a new approach to synthesize a nominal constrained model-based predictive control law which can avoid the ”non-robustness” curse in the presence of model uncertainty. This approach builds on inverse optimality arguments and shows that the unconstrained control law and the choice of nominal system are design elements to synthesize a piecewise affine regulator that guarantees the stability of the polytopic system in a non-degenerate region containing the origin in its interior. Some advantages of this approach are presented and a series of related problems are discussed.
