In this paper, we investigate the issues of real-time sensor scheduling and state estimator design within large-scale sensor network systems. Specifically, data redundancy sometimes occurs in large-scale sensor arrays due to the excessive proximity of sensing units in the spatial domain, leading to high similarity in their measurement data. Currently, it is difficult to account for such redundancy in sensor scheduling algorithms found in existing literature, where the optimal subset of sensors is generally selected by optimizing objective functions formulated from certain performance criteria. To tackle this problem, we introduce an event-based sensor scheduling strategy, the triggering condition of which is designed founded on the similarity of sensor data, so as to identify the most informative subset of sensors for state estimation. To evaluate the impact of the sensor scheduling protocol on system observability, we propose a new notion of E(varepsilon)-observability, based on which an observability criterion is derived. In addition, we have designed a set-valued state estimation algorithm, which takes into account the intricate measurement information structure inherent within the sensor selection mechanism. The performance enhancement of the proposed estimator is also investigated. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed estimation algorithm and to verify the performance improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Continual Learning (CL) is a novel paradigm in which the trained model is computed via a stream of data where tasks and data are only available over-time. Indeed, such approaches are able to learn new skills and knowledge without forgetting the previous ones: no access to previously encountered data and mitigate catastrophic forgetting. In this work, we propose a comparison of different CL algorithms in performing the classification of medical images. In particular, we aim to highlight the potential and ability of current methods in preventing catastrophic forgetting of the previous tasks when a new one is learned. CL-based methods have been tested for the classification of medical images showing the viability and effectiveness of these approaches. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

In the remanufacturing process, the efficient disassembly of end-of-life (EOL) products assumes paramount significance for recycling endeavors. This work introduces a novel disassembly model aiming at enhancing disassembly efficiency within a hybrid disassembly line through the strengths of humanrobot collaboration. In order to optimize the generation of disassembly sequences, this work proposes an improved fireworks optimization algorithm (IFW) that combines uniform mutation and two-point crossover methods. Afterwards, the model's validity and algorithmic accuracy are substantiated using the CPLEX solver (a commercial solver). Furthermore, a comparative analysis and evaluation against alternative algorithms, such as salp swarm algorithm (SSA) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA), demonstrate a better stability of the proposed algorithm in the human-robot collaborative hybrid disassembly line balancing problem. © 2024 IEEE.

The electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem caused by power electronic switching devices and pulse width modulation (PWM) affects the normal operation of the motor drive system. In this paper, a random PWM based on unified modulation is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system. The theoretical basis of unified modulation and the implementation scheme of random modulation are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed random PWM is verified by simulation.

Due to the development of hacking programs, it has become easy to penetrate systems. Hence, there is a need for strong security mechanisms. The use of traditional passwords has become insufficient to secure systems. Biometric authentication is now widely used for security applications, and it has proven to be superior compared to traditional authentication methods. However, two issues need to be considered in biometric systems. The first is not to keep biometric data in its original form in the database. If biometric traits are hacked, they will no longer be of use. Biometric data should be kept in cancelable forms for reuse. The second issue is the reliance on a single biometric, which limits the verification accuracy. This can be solved by using a multimodal biometric system. Using steganography and cryptography, this paper introduces a cancelable multimodal biometric system. As voiceprints, facial images, and fingerprint images are used. In this paper, the verification is performed through the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) of the voiceprints. Steganography is used as a tool to secure features extracted from voiceprints by embedding them into the facial image using block-based singular value decomposition (BSVD). Double random phase encoding (DRPE) is utilized as an encryption algorithm to generate the final cancelable templates. To increase the level of system security, fingerprint images are used as random phase masks (RPMs). Verification is performed by estimating the correlation between registered and test MFCCs. The correlation value is then compared with a threshold value, which is calculated using the distribution curves for the genuine and imposter correlations. Equal error rate (EER) values close to zero and an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AROC) that is close to one are obtained from the simulation results, demonstrating the outstanding performance of the suggested system. Extracting parameters accurately and effectively from solar photovoltaic (PV) models is crucial for detailed simulation, evaluation, and management of PV systems. Although there has been an increase in the development of analytical, numerical, and metaheuristic methods targeting this task, accurately determining these parameters continues to be a significant challenge. This study focuses on applying Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for the extraction of key parameters of RTC France solar cells, a critical step towards enhancing PV system efficiency and reliability. Additionally, the PSO's performance is evaluated against other metaheuristic algorithms including Enhanced Chaotic JAYA (CJAYA), Performance-Guided JAYA (PGJAYA), and Enhanced Gradient-Based Optimizer (EGBO), underscoring the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-based approach. Utilizing MATLAB-SIMULINK, comprehensive analysis and results are presented, shedding light on the efficacy of PSO in addressing the intricacies of parameter extraction in PV systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Brain networks typically exhibit characteristic synchronization patterns where several synchronized clusters coexist. On the other hand, neurological disorders are considered to be related to pathological synchronization such as excessive synchronization of large populations of neurons. Motivated by these phenomena, this paper presents two approaches to control the cluster synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators. One is based on the use of pacemakers to the clusters, and the other is based on feeding back the mean phases to the clusters. We first show conditions on the pacemaker weights and the feedback gains for the network to achieve cluster synchronization. Then, we propose a method to find optimal feedback gains through convex optimization. A numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods. © 2024 IEEE.

LoRa networks operating in a star topology, this configuration creates a single point of failure and may limit scalability and reliability in areas that are large and geographically dispersed. In order to improve the overall transmission capabilities of the network, recent studies show that adding LoRa to the ZigBee devices effectively disseminates network management. By doing so, the strengths of both technologies can be leveraged, with LoRa serving as the long-range transmitter and ZigBee functioning as the mesh network. In this study, we present LoBee, a novel bidirectional communication method between LoRa and ZigBee that relies on Physical-Layer Cross-Technology Communication. Despite the fact that LoRa and ZigBee utilize different modulation techniques, ZigBee devices can detect and recognize LoRa chirps through the process of sampling the received signal strength. For the transmissions from ZigBee to LoRa devices, we carefully select the input chips to generate specific waveforms, where LoBee detects the preamble of a ZigBee frame based on the locations of the repeated peaks. Our evaluation, which was conducted using USRP and commodity devices, demonstrates that LoBee is capable of achieving concurrent bidirectional wireless communications, with a data rate of approximately 639.38 bits per second from LoRa to ZigBee and from ZigBee to LoRa with more than 90% frame reception rate in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
