In this paper we consider the problem of developing a computational model for emulating an RF channel. The motivation for this is that an accurate and scalable emulator has the potential to minimize the need for field testing, which is expensive, slow, and difficult to replicate. Traditionally, emulators are built using a tapped delay line model where long filters modeling the physical interactions of objects are implemented directly. For an emulation scenario consisting of M objects all interacting with one another, the tapped delay line model’s computational requirements scale as O(M3) per sample: there are O(M2) channels, each with O(M) complexity. In this paper, we develop a new "direct path" model that, while remaining physically faithful, allows us to carefully factor the emulator operations, resulting in an O(M2) per sample scaling of the computational requirements. The impact of this is drastic, a 200 object scenario sees about a 100× reduction in the number of per sample computations. Furthermore, the direct path model gives us a natural way to distribute the computations for an emulation: each object is mapped to a computational node, and these nodes are networked in a fully connected communication graph. Alongside a discussion of the model and the physical phenomena it emulates, we show how to efficiently parameterize antenna responses and scattering profiles within this direct path framework. To verify the model and demonstrate its viability in hardware, we provide several numerical experiments produced using a cycle level C++ simulator of a hardware implementation of the model. © 2024, CC BY.

Aiming to assess the progress and current challenges on the formidable problem of the prediction of solar energetic events since the COSPAR/ International Living With a Star (ILWS) Roadmap paper of Schrijver et al. (2015), we attempt an overview of the current status of global research efforts. By solar energetic events we refer to flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar energetic particle (SEP) events. The emphasis, therefore, is on the prediction methods of solar flares and eruptions, as well as their associated SEP manifestations. This work complements the COSPAR International Space Weather Action Teams (ISWAT) review paper on the understanding of solar eruptions by Linton et al. (2023) (hereafter, ISWAT review papers are conventionally referred to as ’Cluster’ papers, given the ISWAT structure). Understanding solar flares and eruptions as instabilities occurring above the nominal background of solar activity is a core solar physics problem. We show that effectively predicting them stands on two pillars: physics and statistics. With statistical methods appearing at an increasing pace over the last 40 years, the last two decades have brought the critical realization that data science needs to be involved, as well, as volumes of diverse ground- and space-based data give rise to a Big Data landscape that cannot be handled, let alone processed, with conventional statistics. Dimensionality reduction in immense parameter spaces with the dual aim of both interpreting and forecasting solar energetic events has brought artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies, in variants of machine and deep learning, developed particularly for tackling Big Data problems. With interdisciplinarity firmly present, we outline an envisioned framework on which statistical and AI methodologies should be verified in terms of performance and validated against each other. As computer graphics technique rises to the challenge of rendering lifelike performers, more lifelike performance is required. The techniques used to animate robots, arthropods, and suits of armor, have been extended to flexible surfaces of fur and flesh. Physical models of muscle and skin have been devised. But more complex databases and sophisticated physical modeling do not directly address the performance problem. The gestures and expressions of a human actor are not the solution to a dynamic system. This paper describes a means of acquiring the expressions of real faces, and applying them to computer-generated faces. Such an "electronic mask" offers a means for the traditional talents of actors to be flexibly incorporated in digital animations. Efforts in a similar spirit have resulted in servo-controlled "animatrons," high-technology puppets, and CG puppetry [1]. The manner in which the skills of actors and puppetteers as well as animators are accommodated in such systems may point the way for a more general incorporation of human nuance into our emerging computer media. The ensuing description is divided into two major subjects: the construction of a highly-resolved human head model with photographic texture mapping, and the concept demonstration of a system to animate this model by tracking and applying the expressions of a human performer.

Parsers are powerful tools for computer understanding of text, whether the language is a natural language or a formal language. To make the computational power of these tools fully available to an end user, a parser should be user-extensible. Until now, a user who wished to control a parser was forced to write or edit a grammar, a text file containing rules. Editing grammars is often difficult and error-prone for end users since the effect of writing specific rules, and interaction between rules, can often be unclear. Grammex ["Grammars by Example"] is the first direct manipulation interface designed to allow ordinary users to define grammars interactively. Instead of writing a grammar in an abstract rule language, the user presents concrete examples of text that he or she would like the parser to recognize. The user describes the text by selecting substrings, and choosing possible interpretations of the text from popup menus of suggestions heuristically computed by Grammex. Speech recognition performance degrades significantly when a mismatch occurs between training and operating conditions. To reduce this mismatch, it is often necessary to characterize the mapping between the two environments. A number of statistical approaches have been developed for this purpose. They can be classified as either predictive or adaptive, depending on what information is available regarding the operating environment. A new framework is proposed to construct large-span, semantically-derived language models for large vocabulary speech recognition. It is based on the latent semantic analysis paradigm, which seeks to automatically uncover the salient semantic relationships between words and documents in a given corpus. Because of its semantic nature, a latent semantic language model is well suited to complement a conventional, more syntactically-oriented n-gram. An integrative formulation is proposed for the combination of the two paradigms. The performance of the resulting integrated language model, as measured by perplexity, compares favorably with the corresponding n-gram performance. © 1997 5th European Conference on Speech Communication and technology, EUROSPEECH 1997. Whether they need Chinese language flash cards, steps and music to a Scottish country dance, physics simulations, or any one of hundreds of other teaching tools, educators and researchers can find them at apple's Educational Object Economy (EOE) project (http://***).The EOE is a complementary online community based around the creation, sharing, and use of teaching resources that incorporate Java applets for web-based learning. Java applets are small, easy-to-use programs written in Sun Microsystem's Java programming language. Using virtually any computer equipped with a standard web browser, educators can access hundreds of teaching and curriculum development tools for use in the classroom, for research, or in other educational endeavors.

A successful startup in the arena of enterprise software, Trilogy Development group began experimenting with HCI as a means for improving user reactions to their products. Two years have passed since the first experiments;in that time an entire HCI group was created and has subsequently become a respected and critical component of Trilogy's development process, as well as taking some responsibility for providing a vision for Tfilogy's future. This paper chronicles our experiences in bringing the "design stance" to Trilogy.
