We are investigating how to empower nonprofit community organizations to develop the information technology management practices required to carry out their civic goals. We highlight our methodology of working with nonprofit organizations through three case examples from the field. These examples illustrate that nonprofit organizations are able to and can indeed sustain their IT management practices through various methodological techniques. These techniques - -such as scenario development, technology inventory assessment, and volunteer management practices - -emphasize the importance of long-term critical planning and design skills. Based on our fieldwork, we enumerate lessons that may be valuable for community stakeholders, designers, researchers, and practitioners. Copyright 2007 ACM.

As technology becomes more embedded in our daily lives, there is a great deal of hope about the use of information technology to achieve positive community outcomes like increasing access to local information, promoting civic engagement, and creating avenues for collaboration and communication. While these technologies provide opportunities for community groups to achieve their own goals, most community computing studies describe community members in fairly passive ways as users of existing systems rather than as meaningful contributors to the design process. The Civic Nexus project is a three year participatory design project that involves working with community groups to increase their capacity to solve local community problems through the use of leading edge computing tools. Our view of participatory design is one in which community members take control of the design process in terms of both directing what should be done and maintaining the technology infrastructure. In this paper, we describe our process of participatory design with three community groups and present associated challenges for designers engaging in participatory design in community computing contexts. As human-computer interaction increasingly focuses on mediated interactions among groups of individuals, there is a need to develop techniques for measurement and analysis of groups that have been scoped at the level of the group. Bandura's construct of perceived self-efficacy has been used to understand individual behavior as a function of domain-specific beliefs about personal capacities. The construct of collective efficacy extends self-efficacy to organizations and groups, referring to beliefs about collective capacities in specific domains. We describe the development and refinement of a collective efficacy scale, the factor analysis of the construct, and its external validation in path models of community-oriented attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Interface cues to promote disclosure and build community: An experimental test of crowd and connectivity cues in an online sexual health forum

Health forums and support groups depend on participant self-disclosure for their success, but the sensitive nature of personal health concerns raises privacy concerns that may constrain what users are willing to reveal. To address this issue, we explore the impact of visual cues designed to convey (1) two facets of social influence—crowd size and social network connectivity—and (2) provide a frame designed to enhance the forum’s sense of community. A 3 (Cue type: Crowd, Connectivity, None) x 2 (Framing) factorial experiment (N = 218) showed that cues implying greater crowd size and connectivity lead to more self-disclosure of sensitive information, and higher intentions to revisit the community. Further, user belief in the community-building heuristic positively predicts self-disclosure and intentions, while also moderating the effect of the connectivity cue in a direction which implies that the cue encourages disclosure by triggering the community-building heuristic. To improve existing social bookmarking systems and to design new ones, researchers and practitioners need to understand how to evaluate tagging behavior. In this paper, we analyze over two years of data from CiteULike, a social bookmarking system for tagging academic papers. We propose six tag metrics-tag growth, tag reuse, tag non-obviousness, tag discrimination, tag frequency, and tag patterns-to understand the characteristics of a social bookmarking system. Using these metrics, we suggest possible design heuristics to implement a social bookmarking system for CiteSeer, a popular online scholarly digital library for computer science. We believe that these metrics and design heuristics can be applied to social bookmarking systems in other domains. © 2007 ACM.

Nonprogrammers who wish to construct and share online resources for a group (e.g., discussion boards, calendars, multi-media documents) may do so by using end-user Web construction tools such as BaseCamp, MSN Group, and CommunityZero to create group or community Websites. Others may prefer collaborative tools like Groove to support a more synchronous style of composition and interaction. However there is little if any support for combining these two approaches-to build, refine, and use shared resources using either a Web browser or real-time collaborative tools. In this short paper we use two user interaction scenarios to illustrate our current work on integrating these two styles of collaboration

We describe the iterative design of a location-sensitive mobile application for community engagement and its use at two consecutive community-oriented "First Night" (New Year's Eve) events. Based on initial analysis of personal status posts, blog posts, and semi-structured interviews, we show that providing users with mobile tools relevant to time and locational contexts in their community can scaffold engagement within a community. In the second year of the study we draw from server log data after the event was promoted for public use. Enhancements to the design are discussed to further support civic participation in distributed community contexts, and design lessons are drawn. © 2010 ACM.

Community computing has recently grown to become a major research area in human-computer interaction. One of the objectives of community computing is to support computer supported cooperative work among distributed collaborators working toward shared professional goals in online communities of practice. A core issue in designing and developing community computing infrastructures - the underlying socio-technical layer that supports communitarian activities - is sustainability. Many community computing initiatives fail because the underlying infrastructure does not meet end user requirements;the community is unable to maintain a critical mass of users consistently over time;it generates insufficient social capital to support significant contributions by members of the community;or, as typically happens with funded initiatives, financial and human capital resource become unavailable to further maintain the infrastructure. Based on more than nine years of design experience with Tapped In - an online community of practice for education professionals - we present a case study that discusses four design interventions that have sustained the Tapped In infrastructure and its community to date. These interventions represent broader design strategies for developing online environments for professional communities of practice. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
